Mega-malls plans unveiled by Tsawwassen First Nation

Local residents give plans a positive reception

The Tsawwassen First Nation land use plan was developed after the band signed treaty with the B.C. government in 2007. ((TFN))

Plans by the Tsawwassen First Nation to build a mega-mall near the BC Ferries terminal got a positive reception from dozens of local residents who turned out at an open house on Wednesday night.

The plans include one indoor mall with 17 retailers covering 1.2 million square feet and three other major retailers on another 600,000 square feet.

There are also plans for office space, an entertainment complex and hotel and millions of dollars worth of highway infrastructure upgrades.

The band has partnered with Ivanhoe Cambridge to build the new mall, which will be roughly equal in size to the Metrotown Mall in Burnaby.

Chris Hartman of the TFN's Economic Development Office says band hopes to build a destination for locals and visitors to the region.

"We expect the Island to be one of our prime markets, and also part of the Interior. So people will come down to Vancouver, come down to Tsawwassen, stay for a number of days, shop, recreate, golf, waterpark, all those kinds of things that provide for a complete shopping experience."

There is a video, etc.

Seems a little excesssive for the location, if you ask me.

Who's going to drive all the way there to shop? Unless it's an outlet mall or something.

I am sorry, but this is a horrible development and goes completely against sustainability.

I can not think of a more out of the way place in our entire metro to build such a thing.

Not to mention the loss of ALR.

Double.....standards

The video has 'boosters' talking about people taking trips from Kelowna just to visit that mall and it's waterslides or something. Yeah right eh? "Let's drive past every other place of interest between Kelowna and the ocean, including Metrotown, and hang out in a mall for 4 days, then drive back. That might work in Edmonton in February, but not here

Well I'm not a fan of the development it is a bit late to complain about the loss of ALR. The time complain was during the treaty negotiations not years after the land has already been removed.

Not stoked to see Vaughn Mills (Toronto) arrive in BC - take this to Kelowna at least, it would blend in so well!

Hmm CBC isn't clear on the concept of enclosed mall

That's 17 "major" retailers over 1.2 million square feet:

And I did complain back then, and i still hate it today, so i will never shop there because i hate double standards, especially when it comes to chipping away our farmland for something like this.

It's not so out of the way. Remember that it will be directly served by the SFPR. It'll be 10 minutes away from the Patullo Bridge on the weekend. 15 minutes away from South Surrey. And so on.

If you are going to use your car anyway, would you rather drive into the rat's nest of Metrotown, or along the new highway to this mall?

The only thing similar this side of Langley that I can think of is Queensborough Landing, but that's a pale shadow of what is being proposed here.

This is for all those people who won't/can't use the malls that are along the SkyTrain lines. All of those malls suck to drive to... this won't suck to drive to.

Interesting plan but if the prices aren't at least as cheap as Seattle outlets (where I buy all my clothes), why would anyone stop there?

I'm too lazy as it is to drive to Coquitlam Centre mall 5 minutes from my house.

But if this mall is a good outlet mall like Crossiron Mills in Calgary, I might be inclined to come once a month.

Maybe they'll improve transit services around there. By that I mean add two bus stops. Getting to Splashdown Park by transit is horrific.

As much as I'm against this development it is not as bad as it seems as far as transit is concerned. I believe the 620 runs every 10-15 min during peak service from Bridgeport station all the way to the ferry terminal. Also there are a number of other bus routes that would only have to be slightly rerouted to serve the new mall.

The Massey tunnel however does not need the extra traffic that will no doubt be generated from this thing.

Looks like more industrial land might be disappearing. Amacon recently purchased the Mott Electric site on 14th Ave in Burnaby. For the price they paid I suspect they intend to build residential.

very interesting. that is this lot for anyone not in the know >> http://g.co/maps/jprde

I PRAY for some street retail when that goes ahead .... that area is in bad need of some. A Starbucks would do gangbusters in Edmonds near the Skytrain.

with the Safeway project up the street I think this area will see lots of change over the next decade.

The buildings formerly known as Lux.

I just found this on my phone so I thought I'd post it. I can never remember what these towers are now called but they were originally called Lux.
