Well that was a disappointing result, Canada needs to learn how to win these kind of games...

Agree. Teams like ES would never try that bullshit with teams like France or Spain, Argentina, etc.. They know if they go down a man or two they're instantly done. Canada will need to be able to capitalize, which they did thankfully.

This is when you have to bury your chances when you get them and Canada had some chances before they scored. Otherwise, you're giving a lesser opponent a chance to stay in the game and El Salvador had a few chances and had they scored they could have dictated the game with smarter delay tactics.

But, woulda, coulda, shoulda, the fact remains, good teams win these types of games and we won.

A bunch of people are losing their poop over the Guatemala game, I have no problem with it. Actually the only problem I have is not playing a couple of extra games to further get the young players playing time.

Pundits declaring we would win the GC was ridiculous. We have the potential to be a good team but to win we have to beat Mexico and the US both on a consistent basis. Anyone of the three and you can include Panama who were dealt the same blow as us can win this region.

I'm not going to crap on Shaff or De Fougerolles or Cornelius. The time to do stupid poop and learn from it is now. I think this was a big enough disappointment to drive the message home.

Also I think Marsch has learned some humility. I said from the beginning I didn't like the hire as he would be a soap opera especially with his relations to the US. But I won't crap on him either, his honeymoon is over and now it's time to be a big boy coach and not a two bit carny hypnotist.

Liam Millar is back training with Hull City, mark my words if he can get to his past level he will be a difference maker for us and allow us to use Shaff in the way he should be used.

I won't say we miss Davies but we really miss Bombito, hope he comes back 100 percent.

Got to get Max back in the net. Dayne is not an inspirational leader, I can't blame him for anything but a keeper has to steal some games, he hasn't. The problem is he fits the typical Euro goalie mold (big frame) and he's Marsch's favourite.

All in all, a good comeuppance can be worth its weight in gold, I just hope Marsch hasn't lost the room with his shenanigans.

I like to post serious player transfer rumours and that is fun but not always accurate. I try to post them later in the process so they aren't just totally wild speculation.

But when I post one sourcing this guy, Fabrizio Romano, you can usually take it to the bank.

Agree. The GC now that Canada will almost be guaranteed a perennial ticket to the World Cup every edition, especially with expanded entrants, is much less important than before, where it was the only thing Canada could hope to play in. It's a training tournament and a lot of players choose to skip it, it happens every 2 years unlike the Euros and AFC cup which is every 4 and we have the Nations League almost every year which is about the same thing, minus having to play as many shithousery teams or "almost there" teams like ES or Curacao or Guatemala. Cherry on top, it doesn't even qualify you to the Confederations Cup anymore since it doesn't exist.

The GC has lost a ton of luster and I barely got excited about it even when Canada was winning its Group Stage. I mean no shade to the other teams but for the purposes of the WC the only relevant teams we'd play were Mexico and the US and it's a shame we didn't get to - that's about it. Schedule a friendly with them if we want to. The Trophy is now kind of meaningless and it's not sour grapes, it's just kind the devaluation of the tournament over the past 10 years. I don't see it as any more meaningful than Nations Leagues games we play against the 2-3 competitive CONCACAF teams anyway.

Frankly I would be more interested in watching friendlies that Canada plays against France, Netherlands, Germany etc. in a World Cup preparation year like this one than the Gold Cup.

I have to say I agree with the above post. Personally I would have got rid of Nation's League, as the Gold Cup had more tradition, but either way it is too much soccer for the players.

I was hoping our guys would beg off the Gold Cup (especially Johnny) since they needed a rest and we needed to have the young guys getting regular minutes.

I know our players love playing for our NT but too much of a good thing sometimes isn't good. I want some of the regulars to get a break from it and then miss the team so hopefully they'll be even more eager to join the NT again.

I don't think it would be a bad idea for the GC to be a development tournament for us. Use the up and coming players and add a few from the NT who aren't regulars to lend some experience. I have posted our 60 man rosters here so there are enough people to fill out a GC lineup. People like Theo Bair, ZBG, Theo Corbeanu, Steven Afrifa, Scott Kennedy, Kwasi Poku, C-A Brym, James Pantemis, Jonathan Sirois and many others. These are guys who deserve a shot and a chance to maybe get back in the main lineup again or a first time look.

I agree with wanting to see us playing different teams than the usual continental rivals. I also think I would rather see experimental teams in the GC without the usual NT regulars.

I think it is great hubris for us to think we'll win the tournament. Sure, we could, but so could four or five other good teams, so the odds aren't great unless a team is overwhelming and against the US and Mexico we're not. Yet.

Canada striker Jonathan David signs 5-year deal with Juventus
Prolific scorer joins Serie A side as free agent following time with France's Lille
The Associated Press July 4, 2025

Canada forward Jonathan David signed a five-year contract with Juventus on Friday.

After his five-year contract at Lille expired, David joined the record 36-time Italian champion on a free transfer.

The deal is worth 6 million euros ($7 million US) per season, with up to 2 million euros ($2.4 million) in bonuses, the Gazzetta dello Sport reported.

It's the first big market move by new Juventus general manager Damien Comolli, who confirmed last month that Igor Tudor will stay on as coach.

David is also Canada's all-time leading scorer with 36 goals in 67 appearances.

Juventus needs firepower up front with Dusan Vlahovic having fallen out of favour and likely to leave the club.

The 25-year-old David scored 25 goals and provided 12 assists in 49 matches across all competitions for Lille last season.

David is also Canada's all-time leading men's scorer with 36 goals in 67 appearances.

The move to Juve is just the latest step up for the star forward who has drawn rave reviews from past and present Canada coaches.

"He's a special talent," John Herdman said in 2019. "I think he's got big things coming."

"He's the smartest player I've ever coached," current Canada coach Jesse Marsch said last year. "And so his understanding of what's happening in the game and how to move around to find the game in the right way, to help the team, I think is at a really high level.

"And the team knows that getting him in the match is really important for us."

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., David was three months old when his family moved to their native Haiti and six when the family came north to Ottawa. He played for Gloucester Dragons Soccer, Ottawa Gloucester SC and Ottawa Internationals Soccer Club, representing Canada at the under-17 level.

A trial with KAA Gent in Belgium came in 2017 after a scout saw him on video. He went to Belgium twice that year, spending time with the second team before earning a full-time invitation. After finishing high school in Ottawa, he returned to Europe to focus full-time on his soccer.

David had to wait until he turned 18 in January 2018, before he could sign a pro contract.

Asked whether he splurged on anything after signing his new deal, David smiles and shakes his head.

"No, no. I wouldn't say I'm a big spender," he said at the time. "I was just pretty happy."

He scored in his league debut for KAA Gent that August with a late equalizer against Zulte-Waregem as a substitute. And he kept scoring off the bench.

In August 2020, he made the move to France's Lille for a reported transfer fee of 30 million euros ($46.8 million), which eclipsed Alphonso Davies' 2018 move to Bayern Munich from the Vancouver Whitecaps.

David went on to score 109 goals in 231 games for Lille, including 25 in 48 appearances last season, reaching the 100-goal milestone for Lille in December when he scored twice in a 3-1 win over Brest in Ligue 1 play.

David made his senior debut for Canada in September 2018 in an 8-0 Nations League qualifying win over the U.S. Virgin Islands. He scored in the 32nd minute to become the youngest player to score for Canada on his debut, then added another five minutes later to become just the fifth to score twice in his first match.

A two-time Canada Soccer Player of the Year (2019 and 2024), David lives up to his nickname of The Iceman. Nothing seems to faze him.

Soft-spoken and unassuming off the pitch, he is in his element on it. David is able to drop back and initiate attacks or finish them. Able to find a crease in opposition defences, he has an uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time. And when he gets the ball, he knows what to do with it, able to score with both feet or his head.

David's commitment to Canada was shown at the Gold Cup where he played substantial minutes despite being out of contract, knowing an injury could derail his big-money move.

Central American nations shout be banned from competing in 2026. These nations have to be the most shameless and pathetic teams of any sport on Earth. Their fans are just as bad.

Probably because you were never an elite athlete, and have no concept of sportsmanship. Try this in hockey, and you will wind up unemployable.

FIFA should penalize dirty teams and their fans to change the culture of "run into an opposing player, then go down like you have been shot and grab your knee in agony until the referee red cards an innocent player."

Canadians are paying the price for being too classy, and to blame the players or coach for this goes to show you lack the ability to tell right from wrong.

By trying to deliberately injure their players? By dropping like a rock when a 5'8 145 Guatemalan brushes against our players? By throwing piss and shit, among other things when we see Guatemalans arriving at the stadium, or blasting megaphones at their hotels at 3 , while the police laugh?

No thanks. I'd rather Canada play with dignity.

Speaking of which, I'm definitely against the ICE raids, but I'd love to see one of these Latin American assholes try this at a World Cup game in Texas. If an American player is sent off, what are the odds that ICE makes an unexpected "visit," to their hotel, and ships the team off to a Libyan detention camp?

CANMNT to play Australia in October at Montréal’s Stade Saputo
First Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team match in Montréal since 2017
canadasoccer.com July 3, 2025

Canada Soccer and Football Australia announced today that Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team (CANMNT) will play Australia (FIFA Rank #26) in an international friendly in the October 2025 window.

The match will take place on Friday, October 10 at Stade Saputo in Montréal, Québec at 19:30 EST. This marks the first CANMNT match in Montréal since June 2017, where Canada defeated Curaçao 2:1 and featured the international debut of captain Alphonso Davies.

Tickets for the Canada v Australia match will go on sale Saturday, July 19, following a series of advance presale windows.

Australia has recently qualified for FIFA World Cup 26™ following a 2:1 victory over Saudi Arabia in June. The Socceroos have qualified for the last six FIFA World Cups and offer valuable preparation for Canada as the squad continues to build momentum ahead of next summer.

“We’re excited to be playing another high-quality match on home soil with our first game in Montréal since 2017. Connecting the People’s Team with the Canadian community is one of our main priorities as we build excitement ahead of our home FIFA World Cup in 2026. We know how passionate the Québec community is for our team, and we look forward to a packed house in October.”
– Jesse Marsch, MLS Canada Head Coach of the Men’s National Team

CANMNT and The Socceroos share a rivalry that dates back 100 years, with their first meeting taking place in 1924. Since then, the two nations have faced off nine times across friendlies and FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, with Canada recording three wins, one draw, and five losses. Fans will remember Canada’s 2:1 triumph in Edmonton during the 1994 FIFA World Cup Qualifying campaign over Australia but were defeated in the return leg 1:2 (1:4 on penalties) at Sydney Football Stadium.

With the addition of this match against Australia, Canada has now finalized its September and October fixtures. Canada Soccer recently announced that CANMNT will take on Colombia (FIFA Rank #14) on October 14. These fixtures follow a competitive September window, where Canada will travel to Europe for friendlies against Romania (FIFA Rank #45) on September 5 and Wales (FIFA Rank #29) on September 9.

Ticketing Information

Tickets for the Canada v Australia match will be available through advance pre-sale windows starting Wednesday, July 16 with the full public on-sale window starting Saturday, July 19.

Additional ticket and pricing information, including premium hospitality offerings, will be available shortly via canadasoccer.com.

Broadcast Information

The match against Australia will air live on OneSoccer, available on the fuboTV Canada streaming service platform, as a linear channel on TELUS Optik TV (Ch. 980), as well as online at OneSoccer.ca and through the OneSoccer app. Fans will find extended coverage across Canada Soccer’s digital channels on Instagram, X, Facebook, BlueSky, TikTok, and YouTube featuring the hashtag #CANMNT.

Daniel Jebbison has joined English Championship team Preston North End on loan from Bournemouth.

In other news, newly promoted to Serie A, side Sassuolo is looking at Tajon Buchanan, as are his loan side Villarreal (from Inter Milan). Bundesliga's Eintracht Frankfurt and EPL's Brentford may also be in the mix.
