Sounds similar to S3 (Snow Skate Surf) that we have at Les Promenades. It is heavily focused on the teen market.

S3 has stores in Quebec and... Grande Prairie, Alberta!

With the Bay having gone neo-retro rustic-chic canuck, they should have considered a modernized version of the original script look of Simpson-Sears (minus the Simpsons) and play on a bit of 1950s-60s nostalgia (which is kind of their strength).

I used to love shopping at National Sports growing up in Toronto. My parents used to always buy my back to school shoes there.

One year later, former World of Maps building on Wellington West remains vacant

Emma Jackson, OBJ
Published on August 30, 2016

Location, location, location – right?

Maybe not.

As of this week, the former World of Maps building in the heart of Wellington West will have been vacant for a year.

The colourless windows and large “for lease” signs at 1235 Wellington St. W. create an unfortunate first impression for visitors to the crossroads of the trendy neighbourhood.

The 1,745-square-foot space and its 1,495-square-foot basement sit at a prime “marquee location” at the corner of Wellington Street West and Holland Avenue, across from the Great Canadian Theatre Company. Bars and restaurants, trendy barber shops, banks and services surround the storefront.

Yet no one has taken the bait.

While BIA director Zachary Dayler said he’s “concerned,” he insisted the long vacancy doesn’t represent a wider problem in the neighbourhood.

The former Tim’s Used Sports Equipment leased in under a month, he said, while Anytime Fitness is taking over a shop that had been empty for a year.

“The right business has to find that space is going to work for them,” Mr. Dayler said.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t other challenges.

At that particular location, the ground floor space would run a business owner as much as $10,000 a month plus utilities, according to World of Maps owner Petra Thoms, who said rent was a factor in her decision to leave the corner after 18 years.

Noise, dust and maintenance problems like leaky ceilings also convinced her to move.

“We kind of made do with it,” she said. “It was always fixed but it is an old building with old pipes.”

According to Ms. Thoms, Starbucks was initially interested in taking over the space when her lease ended, but the multi-national company decided against it.

Mr. Dayler couldn’t confirm that rumour. The property owners also couldn't be reached for comment.

Oliver Tighe, a real estate analyst at Colliers International in Ottawa, said it’s “surprising” that the relatively small space hasn’t been snapped up in such a hot neighbourhood.

“I know a lot of buyers prefer retail plazas that offer smaller units,” he said. Lack of parking or high rent could be playing a role, he said.

Mr. Tighe said it’s usually the big box stores that sit empty, as major retailers move to traditional malls instead of street-facing plazas.

Mashalls / Homesense South Keys

The former Bestbuy at South Keys will become a Homesense /Mashalls and will open on October 20. At the winners next door, they had a sign accepting resumes. Not sure what will happen to the old Winners, I forgot to ask if they are they merging the stores.

Location on Rideau Street in lower level of Hudson's Bay is to open today according to their website. There's a big new sign on the George Street facade.

Thousands line up for grand opening of Cabela's outfitters superstore

The Ottawa Citizen
Published on: September 22, 2016 | Last Updated: September 22, 2016 1:08 PM EDT

Ottawa’s hunting, fishing and camping crowd proved you don’t need to release a new iPhone to generate opening day excitement.

Thousands of people, some of them camping overnight, turned out for Thursday’s grand opening of the Cabela’s World Foremost Outfitter superstore at the Tanger Mall in Kanata Thursday.

The 70,000-square-foot megastore features hunting, fishing and camping gear, as well as an indoor archery range to test its hunting and sporting bows.

In a release the company said the new layout is “designed to surround customers in an outdoor-like experience with a large mountain replica and museum-quality wildlife displays.”

The company says the big-box operation will provide more than 200 jobs.

The wildlife extended to the parking, where early arrivals were entertained by a DJ and a variety of activities and promotions.

Mayor Jim Watson was on the scene with area councillors Allan Hubley and Marianne Wilkinson.

Holiday shopping to be allowed in the Glebe after labour appeal rejected

Jon Willing, Ottawa Citizen
Published on: September 29, 2016 | Last Updated: September 29, 2016 12:55 PM EDT

Shopping will be allowed in the Glebe on Thanksgiving Day after the Ottawa and District Labour Council lost an appeal of city council’s decision to permit holiday shopping on the commercial strip.

“I think it’s a loss for workers, for sure,” labour council president Sean McKenny said Thursday after the Ontario Municipal Board sided with the city.

“It got our city talking about common pause, talking about the importance of holidays and statutory holidays. It’s a loss for small business, quite frankly.”

Andrew Peck, executive director of the Glebe BIA, is happy with the OMB’s decision.

“We’re ecstatic,” Peck said. “We’ve been working on this since 2014. We are just thrilled that the hearing decided in our favour. We felt we put forth a strong case because we really took our time to make a strong application that the city staff supported and recommended.”

The OMB hearing at Ottawa City Hall was scheduled to last three days, but it wrapped up halfway through the second day with the adjudicator delivering an oral decision.

City council voted last February to give the Glebe a waiver to the provincial law that limits shopping on statutory holidays. The Glebe BIA made an application to the city to get the same waiver the Rideau Centre, Rideau Street, the ByWard Market and the Sparks Street Mall already have.

In fighting the city’s decision during the OMB hearing, McKenny called himself and CUPE Local 503 rep Clarence Dungey to provide testimony. Dungey testified that labour organizations are concerned holiday shopping will spread across the city if it’s allowed in the Glebe.

McKenny said the labour council will discuss the potential for further appeals.

Quickie convenience store to replace Boushey's on Elgin Street

Paula McCooey, Ottawa Citizen
Published on: September 30, 2016 | Last Updated: September 30, 2016 12:19 PM EDT

The retail space once occupied by Elgin Street staple Boushey’s Fruit Market will be taken over by a Quickie convenience store.

Boushey’s, owned by the Boushey family for 70 years, closed its doors July 31. The store had aisles of pre-packaged food, but specialized in fresh offerings including fruit and vegetables, homemade soups, hummus and tabouli, and a deli and baked goods department, along with catering and gift basket services.

Regular customers expressed their disappointment when they heard the news the grocery store, considered to be an institution by many, was closing for good.

“Everything is really fresh and they have lots of stuff you can’t find at a normal grocery store,” said nearby resident Julie Lavoie before they closed. “I’m here pretty much every day. It’s a little family-owned business instead of a big corporation. I’m going to miss it and I think everyone is going to miss it.”

A notice was posted on the Elgin Street storefront, located on the corner of Waverley Street, confirming a building permit was issued by the city on Sept. 13 to retrofit the ground floor of the two-storey building.

Quickie is an Ottawa-based classic-style convenience store, with 52 stores around Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.

Ahh... so that's why Bass Pro didn't want to build beside Cabela's:

Cabela's agrees to buy out by Bass Pro Shops in $5.5-billion deal

Bloomberg News, Saskatoon StarPhoenix 10.03.2016

Cabela’s Inc. agreed to be bought by Bass Pro Shops in a $5.5 billion deal, handing a victory to the activist investor that had been pushing the outdoor-sports equipment retailer to put itself up for sale.

The offer of $65.50 a share in cash represents a 19 percent premium to Cabela’s most recent closing price, the companies said Monday in a statement. Capital One Financial Corp. is acquiring Cabela’s credit card business for an undisclosed amount, according to a separate statement.

The deal, which unites two of America’s largest outdoors retailers, comes almost a year after Elliott Associates began pushing Cabela’s to consider a sale. The chain, which had built a following among hunters and outdoor enthusiasts, came under pressure after revenue and profit growth sputtered.

A Saskatoon Cabela’s location opened in the Preston Crossing shopping centre in April 2012; a location opened in Regina in September 2013.

Cabela’s, founded by brothers Richard and Jim Cabela in 1961, said last October that “significant weakness” in its fall apparel and footwear contributed to a disappointing third quarter. Less than a week later, Elliott disclosed an 11 percent stake and said it would push for a shake-up. The company began a strategic review of its business in December.

In winning the bidding for Cabela’s, Bass Pro beat out competition from private equity bidder Sycamore Partners, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

Sidney, Nebraska-based Cabela’s rose as much as 15 percent to $63 in New York trading. The shares already had gained 18 percent this year through last week, supported by speculation of a sale.

Cabela’s card portfolio is issued by its World’s Foremost Bank subsidiary, which employs 700 people and is based in Lincoln, Nebraska. The retailer had about 1.9 million active accounts in 2015, a 6.8 percent increase from a year earlier, according to its latest annual report. The average balance on cards in the portfolio last year was $2,301, the company said.

Capital One didn’t disclose terms of the acquisition, which includes about $5.2 billion in credit-card receivables. In June, Citigroup Inc. paid American Express Co. about $1 billion for the Costco Wholesale Corp. portfolio, which included about $10.5 billion in credit-card receivables. McLean, Virginia-based Capital One said the deal won’t affect its plans to return capital to shareholders.

Capital One Chief Executive Officer Richard Fairbank has expanded the credit-card consulting firm he founded more than two decades ago into a diversified lender that ranks as the ninth-largest commercial bank by deposits in the U.S. A series of acquisitions — including retail card portfolios, energy investment banking and health-care lending firms — have spurred the lender’s growth.

Bass Pro was founded by Johnny Morris in 1972, working out of his father’s liquor store in Springfield, Missouri. Morris is worth about $3.3 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Well, I still desperately miss Boushey's, but a Quickie will make my life easier so I don't have to walk 2 blocks north to Zesty Market or 2 blocks south to Mac's.

That's nice but what if you could have shortened your walk for Shawarama or Shopper's Drug Mart? It's unacceptable to walk more than two blocks for either in this city.

It's the Convenience Store District. The hottest new addition to Ottawa's streetscape since the Shawarma Shop District emerged about five years ago.

Westboro BIA eyes 86 new members under boundary expansion

Peter Kovessy, OBJ
Published on October 04, 2016

The Westboro Village business improvement area wants to grow again.

Eight years after it last expanded, the BIA – which has traditionally focused on the Richmond Road corridor – wants to extend its boundaries to include parts of Churchill and McRae avenues.

If approved, the expansion would add 86 businesses to the Westboro Village BIA, according to a city report. They’d be obliged to pay a levy, which is collected through their property taxes, to the organization.

This would help reduce the levy fees of the existing members, the BIA wrote in a letter to the city. The organization also noted that an expansion would incorporate recent development projects that have expanded the neighbourhood’s retail area.

“An expansion would enable the Westboro Village BIA to beautify and maintain the newly expanded area with the same programming elements that are found in the existing BIA such as graffiti removal, flower planters and pageantry,” city staff wrote in a report tabled today during a meeting of Ottawa’s finance and economic development committee. “The extended boundary would also allow the Westboro Village BIA to enhance the marketing capacity of these new potential members through the BIA’s website and business directory and act as a collective voice for future development projects, such as the Western LRT.”

The report said that of the 86 businesses within the proposed expansion area, 33 told a third-party consultant that they are in favour of joining the BIA while 11 indicated that they are opposed. The remainder did not provide a response.

The Westboro Village BIA was formed in 1979. It is Ottawa’s 12th-largest business improvement area with approximately 200 members, according to OBJ research files.

Municipal approval is required to alter the BIA’s boundaries. On Tuesday, members of the finance and economic development committee directed the councillor for the area, Jeff Leiper, to host a public consultation to “enhance acceptance of the boundary expansion.”

So 38% of the 86 businesses in the proposed expanded area indicated that they were in favour of being included in the BIA. Can a BIA really force it's will onto the other 62% majority just by asking the City to approve their expansion? What if you don't want to belong to it? This BIA thing sounds a bit like a union to me.

Marshalls/HomeSense superstore to open in Ottawa

Bruce Deachman, Ottawa Citizen
Published on: October 6, 2016 | Last Updated: October 6, 2016 5:04 PM EDT

A new Marshalls/HomeSense superstore is on its way to Ottawa.

The new combination store — which will augment Ottawa’s two Marshalls locations at Trainyards and on Merivale Road, and three HomeSense outlets on Merivale and Innes roads and at Bayshore Shopping Centre — will open Oct. 20 at the South Keys shopping centre.

Winners, the third jewel in parent company TJX Canada’s retail crown, already operates there.

The superstore, on the site of a former Future Shop, will occupy more than 35,000 square feet (imagine two NHL hockey rinks, or nearly three Olympic-sized swimming pools, or 880 championship billiards tables, or a single superstore), which Marshalls spokesperson Erin O’Brien promises will be filled with all kinds of shoes, clothing and home décor.

“We’re already established in (Ottawa). What we’re excited about is adding more stores and locations, and especially the superstore, so people can hit their home and their fashion all at the same time, and be excited about more access to locations other than the ones already there.”
