People are going to be exposed to the elements no matter what when getting onto a floatplane, I really don't see this half-height glass as too big of a deal.

edit: Aren't they all overpaid MLAs travelling on our dime anyways? Who cares. lol!

I think the terminal is an improvement, because the city interacts with the water instead of politely keeping its distance. That stair will be a pretty dramatic experience, being cantilevered over the inlet like that... though it's going to be real slippery in the winter months, being completely exposed to the elements. Dunno why the glass is higher on the upper 2 flights of stairs...

The docks don't have canopies at all
- so spending money on a completely enclosed "greenhouse"-like walkway that disgorges people into the elements onto an wholly unprotected dock seems a bit unnecessary.
The handrail height would also allow more clearance for umbrellas.

Exactly. Unnecessary and irrational.

In theory, would it be possible to put canopies (maybe centre-supported) over the docks? Or would the planes' wings or something else not permit that?

I would totally be in favour of a cluster of teflon canopies floating over the docks to provide partial coverage from the elements. They have a nautical feel, keep the space bright, and could be arranged randomly to generate a waves/whitecaps-over-the-water aesthetic

Not sure if canopies would catch the wind from plane propellors.

Does anyone know the cost per person for the float plane operators to use the current termporary terminal?

Seating for 700 people (500 in, 200 out). How do they think so many people want to eat at their Cactus Club??

Must be costing them a *fortune* to setup for the Summer.

all the prom kids alone in june could keep that place afloat for a year

that area needs a good restaurant - there is nothing there - if you're at a convention you don't want to walk too far

Plus I imagine it will turn into the automatic response staff of the Tourism Vancouver Visitor Centre will give to the hundreds of people every day who ask "we're from out of town and where should we go for lunch that is nearby and has a nice view of the water?" Up until now there have actually been very few places that fit that request.

^ seriously. one wonders how these spaces weren't far more intensively monetized from the very initial planning stages. like the sea-wall should pretty much be ringed with commerces.

I ran by the Convention Centre last week (wednesday evening I believe) and there was a whole lot of nothing going on inside the space. It hardly looks as if they have started so far, just a lot of bare concrete and a collapsable table or two. Best of luck to them getting it open.

Speaking of restaurant openings, Eisenstat's "Ki" was supposed to be open last November (it still isn't) and his Roger's Mansion property was supposed to be open by January (pretty sure it isn't either). Work on Ki is ongoing though, hopefully it will be up and running soon.

Mahony and Sons are opening a pub at the northeast corner of the convention centre. You can take a look at the pics here:
