Chicago's 20th 800-footer takes to the skies!
Did a quick check - as of 2008 (pre Trump and Aqua) Chicago had 10 800+ footers. This will be an impressive doubling of that height in a relatively short time. With several more on deck.

While 700+ has gone from 13 to 28 in that time (and this will be 29).

Bonus Fact: Incredibly NYC only had 12 800 footers in 2008 as well. (by roof height)

That's pretty insane, there aren't too many cities in the world with that many 800 footers

What's next though? 400 LSD? Parcel I? Tribune East? Anyone wanna place bets?

There are so many surface parking lots and nondescript parking garages and 1 story buildings toward the south loop that could easily fill up the southern section of the skyline. But this will defintely fill in a dead space so this is great. It was embarassing having a massive surface parking lot right their on south michigan ave.

But yeah, the tribune condos are selling well so I'm hoping for Tribune East to start. We all know the only reason that they aren't going for the tallest in the city with it is because the Sears Tower is undergoing several renovations and they don't wan to take the shine away from that.

Yes absolutely. Also fill one of the last gaps on Michigan Avenue.

Goodbye pretty mural… wish it could be saved but at least it has been photographed many times and maybe it’ll be replicated somewhere in the city.

Isn't 400LSD also supposed to start next year? I forget if it's been approved or not.

Actually both artists have very similar large murals in the West loop.
Glad to see this in under construction again!

Which artist did this mural? I am looking to have a few smaller ones completed next year around the city.

I know everyone is thrilled to have another tall/significant tower built in this area for lots of reasons (though for most, I suspect we had you at "tall" ), but I wonder what people think of this as a quality, distinctive design. While not an eyesore by any stretch, it also doesn't seem to do anything to add luster to Chicago's architectural reputation. The flaring of the tower is pretty timid and the curves very subtle. Not a typical glass box, but a glass box nonetheless and nothing to write home about. Is that a fair assessment (and I'm not trying to be a downer--eager to be educated on why this is banana-worthy)?

Yeah, your take is more or less the tldr of the last several years of discussions on this forum regarding the design.

I feel mostly the same, however I feel this will be one of those designs that will turn out better in person than the renderings - which I think was also the case with NEMA. It's going to make a big impact from the west too and that vantage is not really shown in renderings.
