Projects & Construction:
I want to thank the photographers and local businesses, sharing updates on projects, who make this thread possible. Without you, these updates won't happen. I don't make any money from this and these updates are to share, with both locals and out-of-towners, what is happening in the city they love. Many people reading this are far-away and this allows them to see the projects. If you can, please support any local businesses or follow social pages sharing photographs and thank them.
We have several new projects, a few completions, and some updates on projects we haven't heard much about. Lets get updated!

The Grounds Office Building:
A construction set was submitted for Wake Forest's new office building at 511 Deacon Boulevard. It's 131,174-square-feet, with 130,874 'usable' square-feet. The total cost is roughly $16,149,670. What I most want to share is an 'artist statement' from the architect: "Blending high-end design with an industrial aesthetic rooted in the area’s history. The building seamlessly integrates into the fabric of its surroundings, while establishing a strong architectural dialogue with the adjacent Allegacy Stadium at Wake Forest University. While the design is forward-thinking, it also pays homage to Winston-Salem’s industrial heritage. Exposed brick, industrial windows and stone elements lend an authentic aesthetic that speaks to the city’s manufacturing history. These industrial elements are tempered with renewed materials, like rich wood ceilings, curated metal accents, and the use of large window walls which elevate the building’s overall feel. This careful balance between roughness and elegance delivers a modern workspace with an authentic character. The design incorporates energy-efficient systems, and materials sourced with sustainability in mind. These measures ensure the building minimizes its environmental impact while maximizing occupant comfort and long-term operational efficiency."
1782 George Stockburger House Restoration:
The young couple restoring this house are now preparing to move-in. They offered this update in mid-October: "This used to be a rotting hall of three strange thresholds, and took completely ripping out the floor to get it to be all one level. Then Jason put down brand new wood floors. It took us forever to decide how to finish the log wall. We knew we didn't want to completely cover it up. We thought about plexiglass and even a wall of windows, but decided on just giving it this new mud. Then Jason trimmed it out, making decisions as he went, and now it looks pretty darn fresh for being so old."

NCMA Downtown Art Museum:
The North Carolina Musuem of Art - Winston-Salem will open a downtown Winston-Salem museum on Fourth Street in Spring 2026. NCMA Winston-Salem's downtown museum will have exhibition and program space to foster creativity and collaboration among visitors, artists, and community groups. "In its downtown space, NCMA Winston-Salem will partner with practicing artists to present exhibitions and experiences that encourage living with and through art. The space will invite visitors to interact with art and artists, generate ideas and connections, and support North Carolina's creative ecosystem." You can expect traveling exhibitions, immersive programs, and unique opportunities to connect with artists and each other. The Winston-Salem museum started downtown in 1956.

New Tenants/Leases:

Edward Jones has leased part of the second floor of the Stratford Oaks Building (514 South Stratford Road). Magnolia Construction is the general contractor for this upfit.

Moravian Ministries has leased space on the 15th floor of the Wells Fargo Center. Magnolia Construction will upfit the 3,006-square-foot space.

7 Brew Coffee will open at 2600 Lewisville-Clemmons Road. I'm guessing they will demolish the existing building and construct their signature drive-through structure?

The owners of Tuscani Restaurant will open a deli & market on the western side of Bailey South, in downtown's IQ District. This is the former Black Mountain Chocolate space. When it opens, next year, it will serve burgers, sandwiches, salads, and market items, including Tuscani’s fresh-made pasta.

Jaggers Burgers, Chicken, & Shakes restaurant will open at 1915 Hampton Inn Court. APD Engineering & Architecture is the architect for this 3,547-square-foot restaurant.

Panda Express will replace the former Twin Peaks, at 1917 Hampton Inn Court. The existing building will be demolished and replaced with a new structure. APD Engineering & Architecture is the architect for this project. The new building is expected to be 2,700-square-feet in size and will cost a little over $1 million.

Grain Apart is considering a location at 1039 Burke Street for a Mediterranean grab-and-go concept with a kitchen. This is not a done deal, but is being strongly considered.

Dabble Art Bar is considering opening in the former Sixth & Vine location, at 209 West Sixth Street. If they select this location, they will keep the kitchen to host events. An art bar is a place where guests order art materials from a menu for self-led creative time.

Teall Sports & Entertainment is expanding and will renovate 3,590-square-feet, on the 12th floor at 500 West Fifth Street, to accommodate this expansion. Frank L. Blum Construction is the general contractor for this project.

New Office Space (Adaptive-Reuse):
The structure at 2572 South Stratford Road could become a for-lease office space. It is being considered, though MEP upgrades could end these proposed plans, if those upgrades don't pencil.

New Jobs:
The State issued a $142,500 infrastructure grant to assist Yadkinville in expanding the Advantage Machinery Services facility, through construction of a new force main sewer. Advantage Machinery is expected to create 17 new jobs with their expansion.
MUSE Winston-Salem:
MUSE museum has raised nearly 90% of their $3.1 million fund raising goal for their 13,000-square-foot space on the first floor of the old Bankruptcy Court. Michael Graves will be the architect and Frank L. Blum Construction will be the general contractor. It's expected to employ roughly five people when it opens in September 2026. Exhibits will include a 1905 horse-drawn fire engine; The Safe Bus immersive experience; The Sounds of Winston-Salem music listening room, featuring local music that includes everything from Moravian music to today's rock and hip-hop artists; and a visiting exhibit space that can be rented (and has the stained-glass window from the airport on display).

New Headquarters:
Botanical-based wellness and cosmetic products company, W.H. Farms, will move their headquarters and manufacturing to Winston-Salem. This is a company that makes store-brand products, both in the United States and internationally, that include bath scrub, bath bombs, body butter, pain balm, beard oil, massage oil, and tincture and cannabidiol extract gummies.
WFBH Eye Institute:
Completion for the new downtown Eye Institute is set for Summer 2026. It's expected to expand services, with designated spaces for exam services for adults and children, diagnostics and testing suites, operating rooms, and an optical shop, in addition to the optometry exam areas. In addition to operating rooms and two floors of clinic space, the Eye Institute will also have spaces for education and research on the top floor. This includes a surgical wet lab to expand learning opportunities for medical students, residents, and fellows. The medical school will double the number of residencies, expand their fellowship program into four sub-specialties, and partner with the state community college system to offer advanced hands-on learning opportunities for ophthalmic technician students.

Downtown Amphitheatre:
The new amphitheatre will cost $10 million and open in Spring 2026, according to presenters from the DWSP Annual Meeting. Interestingly, DWSP and a local business publication are both reporting 5,000+ seats. Yes, '+' as in... it could have more than just 5,000 seats. Jim Brammer said Live Nation did a study on how to drive future ticket sales and will develop 50 amphitheatres of this size, with 18 starting construction over the next 18 months. This will be a $1 billion investment, nationally. He said the largest promoter recognized Winston-Salem and similar markets need to be served, without requiring these customers to travel 100 miles for live entertainment. They are studying other similar venues, across the nation, and still making changes to the design. It's viewed as a perfect site and they want this to be the best venue of its size. For that reason, this project doesn't have a finished construction set, at this time. Examples of artists you could see include James Taylor, Darius Rucker, and Brad Paisley, according to what was said at the Annual Meeting. Those are just examples of artists playing similar sized venues. This venue is expected to host 30+ events each year.

First Baptist Church Restoration:
First Baptist is ready to start work on their new pavilion, relocated playground, parking, and drop-off area. Worth noting: They are also considering adding solar panels, to offset energy costs, and EV chargers, to generate revenue for the church. Another revenue generator being considered is renting the pavilion and new outdoor space.

Alternative Transportation:
The Grounds Long Branch Trail Connector:
Long Branch Trail will be extended to The Grounds and Wake Forest University. Route options are being studied to connect the two trails and create one bicycle and pedestrian trail from Wake Forest University to downtown Winston-Salem. They will seek community input, but it's too early to know when those meetings will held.
Salem Creek Greenway:
The City has selected a consultant to design different ways for Salem Creek Greenway to cross Salem Creek and solve its flooding issue.
Transit, Bike, & Pedestrian Improvements:
New TransAid Buses:

Twin City Trail:
Twin City Trail has only been open for roughly a month-and-a-half and the City is already reporting strong usage. It still doesn't have directional or informational wayfinding/signage. They are considering using 'temporary' walkway stickers, similar to what the ballpark used when it opened. A list of 'comfort enhancement' recommendations is currently being created for the trail, including shade trees, trash cans, benches, artwork, lighting, and call boxes. Look for the lighting issue at High Street and the bridge over Brookstown Avenue to be resolved, soon, by Duke Energy. The City has contacted them about it.
