I'm in favour of lighting. I don't want Vancouver to become Las Vegas by any means but I see lighting as an architectural design element and if done well it can add a lot to a building.

I'm not a fan of light pollution or wasting energy but LED technology requires very little energy and throws off very little ambient light so it's really the best of both worlds in this regard. And if nice lighting makes people happy (it makes me happy) then it's worth it in my mind. Also, in a city as grey and rainy for half the year as Vancouver it really helps combat the depressing dreariness.

I don't need to see lighting on every other new building but it would be nice to have some sort of (tasteful) lighting on the Shangri-La to add some interest to what is now a tall and iconic tower for Vancouver.

Anyways, it's not the end of the world if it gets some sort of lighting element or not. I'll still like the Shangri-La and I'll still have other buildings to look forward to like the Hotel Georgia and West Pender Place that will add some more lighting to the city.

Haha the chandeliers do look rather out-of-place, but I don't think they are as bad as people have made them sound.

It certainly differentiates the hotel from the crowd - what would be there otherwise, clusters of hanging globes or cylinders or potlights on the ceiling?

A one-bedroom on the 34th floor, facing southeast was just listed at an asking price of $428,000.

I don't recall the starting prices, but it was quite some time ago. Things were much cheaper than now.

some of them are very overpriced. for example, unit 3804 is listed for 1,699,000. and 4 years ago was bought for 889,000. people are really after some huge profits, good luck to them. although there are some units where the price increase in the same period has been much more modest.

Yeah, it's always wisest to wait at least 6 months before selling in a new building.

More info. about the possibility of lighting effects on Shangri-La??

There is a long article about James Cheng and the Shangri-La by Michael Harris in the January/February edition of Vancouver magazine. The article vaguely mentions the possibility of video projection on "the tower," but as you can see from the quotes I retyped below, the information is vague:

From page 62 of the Jan/Feb 2009 edition of Vancouver magazine:

"An open-air courtyard is reserved for the Vancouver Art Gallery's use as a sculpture garden--an effort to enliven a traffic-weighted expanse of Georgia Street--and the tower is rigged with projection technology to allow for video displays."

So are they talking about the tall tower that is the Shangri-La or the short VAG building next to the courtyard? If it is the latter, I certainly wouldn't call this "the tower."

Later in the article, however, the luminescent squares are described on page 63:

"Pearlescent square buttons dot its north and east flanks, absorbing and reflecting the changing sunlight; they bleed from copper to yellow to rust depending on the viewer's position, and even glow faintly in the dark."

From this, it sounds like the squares don't do much else. Hmmm... I'm even more perplexed than before!

Another interesting observation from the author is that the Shangri-La is a "different building from every angle" and though I had subconsciously noted this, the written observation really brought this fact to my attention. It's true, and I think it makes the Shangri-La somewhat unique. Let's hope that this "video projection technology" makes it VERY unique!

Thanks for the info cjohnny4. I get the impression from the article that the projection equipment will be on the tower (likely near the base) but it will project video/images over around the VAG site. At least we shouldn't have to wait much longer to find out in person.

i think teh video projections go on the snmaller building where the gallery is but the video comes from the tower itself
