My friend who moved to Calgary last year is having none of it.

It was -1 today in Thunder Bay, felt like 4 or 5 in my neighbourhood around lunch time. High of -8 tomorrow, -12 on Thursday, -6 on Friday and Saturday, and -14 on Sunday and Monday. We've been having a weird, warm winter where all the cold snaps only last a day or two as opposed to the usual week. December was a full degree warmer than usually and only went below -25 once (to -27). So far, January has been 3 degrees warmer than normal and has gone below -25 once (to -28).

Typically we see several sub -30 nights by now. The highs aren't really impressive but the lows are not as low as normal. Precipitation is a bit higher than usual.

Pretty soon we'll be having pissing matches about who can successfully grow arctic flowers and lichens.

BC set an electricity consumption record on Monday thanks to the cold snap. Lots of snow coming down in Vancouver now, with high winds in the Fraser Valley making it worse there.

Must be very localized conditions.

Here are a couple of pics of downtown Vancouver from a few minutes ago. Clear, cold, dead calm, not a flake in the air.

Of course, I wouldn't be surprised to look out the window in another half hour and see a blizzard.

Tuesday was cold in Vancouver. There were some light flurries earlier in the day downtown and then it got kind of hazy sunny.

Tuesday's high at YVR was -6 C, the low was -8 C. Some of the data seems to be coming back now for the Vancouver Harbour weather station. Maybe tomorrow I'll be able to report temps from my neighbourhood again.

I didn't realize it was this cold before leaving for work lol

*****

Definitely putting my car in a parking garage for this storm. Can you imagine if we get 70-80 even 97 cm?

It's not that bad. Closest to me is $2/30 minutes to a daily (6 am-6 pm) max of $12. Then it's $5 evening (6 pm-6 am). So I should be able to store it Thursday evening to Saturday morning for $22. That's worth waiting for them to plow my street (4:30 pm the day after the storm last time) and dig out my car. I never have to do it alone, at least one neighbour always comes out, but still. Takes 30 minutes or more.

Very cold morning indeed. -12 when I left the house, SHHs neighbourhood was down to -14. -14 out in the burbs too. This is about as cold as it ever really gets here. At least it's sunny out, and there's no wind to make things worse.

Probably the first time since living in PEI I've seen my wiper fluid freeze into a chunk on the wind shield. We use the -20 stuff so it should have been okay, not sure what happened there this morning.

Forecast for friday seems unchanged so far. 40-60+ cm of snow, winds gusting to 130. It could end up being one of the worst snow storms of all time, no big deal. Right?

Woken up by a front end loader cleaning my streets at 430am so I might as well do some posting.
More snow coming on top of the 30 to 40 on the ground.
Snowfall warning for another 20-30 cms in the next day or two.
And warming temperatures!

-6 -4 -3 0 1 1 1

-5 -5 -4 -2 -3 -2

So the temperatures are getting back to normal and the snow cover is getting back to the old days.

The storm track so far this year seems to be over NS & the Avalon.

We're missing today's storm in Moncton (only 2 cm expected) and tomorrow's storm too (again 2 cm). Tomorrow's storm will be the dirt you guys get on Friday.

The storm after that is on Sunday, with current predictions being 10-15 cm (or as we refer to that amount here in SE NB, a "light dusting"). The long range after that is mostly clear.

Like are we going to survive this storm? Can you survive 60-100cm of snow in a day? Will my roof collapse?

In the great blizzard of 1992 here in Moncton we got 162 cm of snow (over two days) and we all survived. Just don't expect to see a snowplow on your street for the first three days after the storm.

Buy some beer and storm chips and you'll be fine.......

I can't. Doing dry January to shed some of my winter weight early (Down 8.5 lbs since Jan. 1 - I drink a lot it seems lol) Drinking at home during a snowstorm is probably my favourite time to drink, even more than at social gatherings, and this will be my second snowstorm and snow day without lol. Oh well.

But good to know I'll live lol

High of +4 again today. Hard to believe it’s the middle of January and it still feels like winter hasn’t really set in.

Friday has a high of -6 though so it won’t be long until we feel it. Next weeks forecast has lots of cold weather.. just in time for the statistically coldest day of the year (January 21).

-38C and ice fog this morning. took half the drive in to feel like my tires were not square anymore. that and the brakes felt mushy.

Was in McMurray yesterday in a warmer -31.

In this cold even the extension cord for the car stays in the same shape it was left in.

My hairy beast of a dog just looked at me with distain this morning when I sent her out for her morning constitution.

However supposed to be above 0 by Tuesday.

My site visit today was canceled due to the cold but tomorrows is still on.

Snow day in southwestern BC! Schools are closed in Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley, and on Vancouver Island. We (in New Westminster) got what looks like about a foot or so of snow and it's still coming down.
