Wonder if it will have similar offerings as Mooney's did. That place was one of my favorite lunchtime spots.

I get it had been around forever, but the food was just ok and they only did takeout since the pandemic anyway. Hoots was a cool spot, so would have liked for them to stay open, but there were a handful of breweries I preferred over them.

After covid we had problems getting service at 6th and Vine. Someone would sit us but then we'd never get served. If things went well they'd take our drink order and never come back.

That being said, we gave them chance after chance. The last time we went we had good service and I had the best cheeseburger I've ever had in town. Better than any "burger" restaurant.

I did notice that it appears that they lost a lot of their outdoor patio space that they shared with the "Visual Index" building at 6th & Trade. That was fenced off and the canopy shades in the alley way they used to have attached to that building were detached.

UNCSA American Roots Music Program

UNCSA announced a $10.1 million gift today to establish an American Roots Music Institute (so bluegrass, folk, Americana, maybe some blues, etc.)

This could be very cool for the music scene in Winston and the region.

Since 2020, Winston-Salem has averaged 6,300 net new residents annually—nearly double the pre-pandemic rate. The 25-44 age cohort jumped from 32.6% of the population in 2020 to 33.6% in 2023, representing thousands of young professionals choosing Winston-Salem over other markets.

This wasn't gradual improvement—it was a demographic shift that happened consistently over three years, enabled by a complete restructuring of how and where people work.

The question isn't whether Winston-Salem can attract young professionals—we've proven we can. The question is whether we can keep them as the economic conditions that brought them here begin to change, and whether we can attract new professionals to follow their lead.

Good article, thanks for posting. I've lived in Charlotte, Raleigh and the Triad and imo the quality of life in the Triad is vastly superior to the other two. But people go where the jobs are and in a non work-from-home environment the quality of life metric has less importance to employment. Need to figure out how to grow higher income jobs and the banking losses don't help.
