Not even slow news. Like, people are outraged. I don't understand. And I think it's pretty obvious that I am, as a rule, among the first to get pissed off if we're being abused or misused. Just not understanding this at all. I don't even know how people made the leap that the before shots (of farm animals? FARMS? Does ANYONE, ANYWHERE, associate NL with farms?) are intended to be here. This is a company from California or some such place. They have no idea what song it is, they just wanted a hick/country vibe. Could've just as easily been "Cotton Eyed Joe". It's not about us lol

So it looks like Eleanor Collins died at age 104. The last vestige of Canada's music scene from the 1930s. She had her breakout on CFRN in 1935 and would become the first black person to host their own TV show in North America in 1951, beating Duke Ellington by a year. She didn't do many recordings, with .ost of her surviving material being live recordings from her TV show. Her singing style was not that innovative, instead choosing to mimic American artists. But she paved the way for innovative artists, especially in Western Canada and that is what she is best remembered for.

Had to check that one out as we weren't on the air in Canada until September 1952.

She was invited by CBC to star in The Eleanor Show, that ran from June 19 to September 11, 1955, making her the first woman, first person of colour, and first jazz singer to headline a show on national TV, predating the Nat King Cole Show. (Wikipedia)

Can't believe I missed this one, (The) Stampeder's Ronnie King (Cornelis Van Sprang) died March 4th.

The group had so many hits and was getting so much airplay that they had to release a song under Rich Dodson's name so they weren't totally overexposed.

Criminally forgotten by many, here is a reminder of how over they were (and I won't even mention Sweet City Woman)

I was thinking the other day that there are no big Canadian bands anymore that are just Canadian. Like the Tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo, honeymoon Suite and countless others from that era. Bands that could fill arenas or big venues here and nowhere else. I guess streaming killed Canadian content?

Or am I completely wrong and just out of touch?

The Trews are the first to come to mind, although I don't put them at that level. I'm assuming you are talking rock, and not country, as in that genre you would have bands like High Valley and James Barker Band that do well in Canada with pretty low profiles in the US.

It's hard to imagine a band filling an arena anywhere.

Hell, it's hard to imagine how the music industry follows today's pop stars. I've been thinking of becoming a Swifty just so I can be a part of something the last time ever there's something to be a part of. But I just can't do it.

Sam Roberts, Billy Talent and the Sheepdogs seem to be doing well, while staying Canadian as far as I can tell. Sadly since Bell squashed my local rock station to make yet another classic pop station, I'm hearing fewer current-day artists (Canadian or otherwise) than I would like.
