Yeah, as late as 1990, skyscrapers = US/Canada. Even well into the 1990’s.

Europe is worth mentioned as half of it has been developed for a very long time and they build no skyscrapers and suddenly they decide they should be some as well. But of course, most of change came from East/Southeast Asia and Middle East.

Main issue with SF is housing prices. VCs were complaining, rightfully so, that most of their startup invested capital was simply going to San Francisco landlords and not into building companies. Not much different than a standard apartment building really except the ownership of the units is crowdsourced.

Also, I'm a bit late to the party here but Metro Vancouver is currently at 106 highrises U/C. This number is quite accurate as each crane is tracked on a crowd sourced document and updated by the community. The actual number is likely a bit higher than 106 since projects that lose their crane are removed from the list even though completion of a highrise often takes months after the removal of the tower crane.

Yeah it's changed a ton. Not sure what occurred in the mid 90's, a sort of drought, but after the 2008 collapse, the recovery witnessed a bonanza.

This is separate. They have different regions. As far as I'm aware, Miami is still very much in play. They've been on a large capital expenditure spree in Brickell.

Speaking of Miami:

Brickell Key could be getting its first ever supertall tower, according to new filings with the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA filings were received by the agency on December 20, 2022.

Two towers would be built on the south end of Brickell Key.

Tower 1 is proposed to rise 1,049 feet, while tower 2 is proposed to rise 700 feet.

This is obviously the highest out of any city in the United States, but I wonder also North America. Does anyone know?

^ No Toronto is always the highest in that category and has been for about 20 years now, although with the current construction slump it's surprisingly close.

There are 22 buildings 150m or greater u/c with the tallest being Sky Tower at Pinnacle One Yonge at 351.4 m, or 1153 ft. Not sure about the entire metro area but there's 5 more in Mississagua and 2 in Vaughan which would bring it to 29 if there are none elsewhere in the metro.

Seattle has slowed way down.
--1200 Stewart 2 x 484' or so, mostly residential. 1,050 units. To complete this year after several years of slow going.
--2300 Sixth, 2 x 484' or so, residential. 1,130 units. Completing this summer or so.
--Sixth & Wall, 484' or so (hey, that's what the zoning allows in that area!), residential. Topping out this summer.
--121 Boren Ave N, 484' or so, residential, rising from the pit this summer, residential.
--900 University, 418' or so, addition to senior living complex, just started shoring this spring (speaking as a local construction guy that's the best definition of a start around here).

Bellevue isn't building any highrises at all, but there's a burst in new woodframe residentials in the eight-story range that just started. A 3 x 600' project (res, res, hotel/off) has said they'll start in July.

Yea,its not catching Chicago. And at least Chicago's actually vibrant. Bunch of empty buildings isnt impressive.
I bet tourists come to Miami and wonder where all the people are.
Highrises on empty streets isnt a good look, it's bleak.

I honestly think if Seattle didn't put weird height limits over the Denny Triangle and surrounding areas there would've been way more 150m+ highrises built. Despite that, they're really beautiful. I love the glass look and the city itself. I wish Miami had more glass towers, but I guess white stucco towers have been the city's theme for some time.

Have you visited Miami recently? I've visited LA recently and it was bleak. Maybe focus on your home city more.
