Looks like this one is completed. Love the jagged block facade (kinda reminds me of Levi's Plaza) with the canyon forming a perfect frame of Salesforce Tower + Oracle Park. The earthy red tones with the texturized GFRC panels really gives off an organic vibe worthy of its namesake.

The 23-Story Canyon Opens In Mission Rock, San Francisco

BY: ANDREW NELSON 5:30 AM ON JUNE 22, 2023

The Canyon, an aptly named 23-story residential tower in Mission Rock, officially opened yesterday morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Mission Bay. The celebration kicks off leasing for the 283 apartments, including 102 affordable units, inside the tallest building to open in San Francisco this year. The Canyon is part of the 28-acre master plan by Mission Rock Partners, a joint venture with the San Francisco Giants and Tishman Speyer.

Netherlands-based MVRDV is the design architect, with Perry Architects as the associate architect. The reddish tower rises 258 feet tall over 3rd Street, while the rest of the structure quickly erodes with jagged block modules and balconies down to a mid-structure public pathway that forms a canyon between the main tower and a five-story annex. The exterior is wrapped with prefabricated and texturized glass fiber-reinforced concrete panels.

The Canyon’s pathway rises up from the “handshake” plaza off 3rd street and into a perfectly framed vista of the Giants stadium and Salesforce Tower in the distance. The picturesque nature should guarantee a steady stream of foot traffic through the Canyon’s riverbed. Walking through, the pathway extends onto the Mission Rock internal streets across from the Visa HQ and close to Parcels B and F.

In a brief statement about the design process for the Canyon, MVRDV described their search for inspiration, writing that “San Francisco combines rigid grids with a daring natural topography. While Mission Rock will become an extension of the city’s existing urban grid, the site misses the topographical qualities and challenges that make some of San Francisco’s traditional neighbourhoods so charming.” In conclusion, the Dutch studio set off to recreate a ‘rocky hill’ along the water.

GLS is the landscape architect responsible for designing the lush ground-level and outdoor amenity spaces. BKF is the civil engineer, and Magnusson Klemencic Associates is the structural engineer. Swinerton is the tower’s general contractor.

Across from The Canyon, construction is moving quickly on the China Basin Park, a five-acre waterfront open space designed by SCAPE Landscape Architecture with Min Design and the Miller Company for Mission Rock Partners. Webcor is their general contractor. The programming for the park includes a dense network of amenities, connections to the water, and shaded pathways around a grand lawn that aims to attract a regional audience.

Thanks for the update. It looks like the park is coming along nicely too. I cannot wait for this project to be finished. Any plans for the massive parking lots south of this development? I would rather have more high quality development there like the Mission Rock development. Everything else developed in Mission Bay is a bit disappointing.

That parking lot is the same one the Giants own, and is a part of phase 2 of Mission Rock. No designs have been announced as of yet.

Based on the gate I'm gonna take a wild guess and assume it won't be open to the public. Which is a shame because I would LOVE to take a stroll through there.

According to the SF YIMBY report it does appear that it'll be a public pathway. Maybe it'll just be open during daytime hours?

Oh awesome, that would make sense for it to be closed during the nighttime.

Yeah maybe it will be like the Trinity complex on Market. Very nice space to walk through, but only open certain hours of the day.

The new street running through the development is open to the public and provides some interesting views that were harder to see before. The building height:street width ratio gives a nice urban canyon feel:

^ Great shots and perspectives! Thank you for sharing! The architecture on this project is A+ level, or at least much better than the rest of Mission Bay. It'll be really nice once the street level retail fills in too. Were you able to tell if you can walk in between the two buildings that form The Canyon?

Ah nice shots! I saw this from Dolores Park last night (surprised by how squat it looks) and thought about riding over to check on progress.

Looks great, and definitely elevates the rest of the Mission Bay area! I'm excited to check out Mission Rock on my next visit to SF. When the remaining parking lots get developed, this area will be really impressive.

The Studio-Gang building is giving out some very strong McGraw-Hill Building vibes. And I like it.

Thank you! Regarding the passageway in The Canyon - The two streets that the passageway exits out on to are still closed so I wasn't able to tell but I remember hearing about it referred to as a public passageway in the past. The gates they have installed at either end of the passage have a larger gate and a smaller door that can be used when the gate is closed. I'm guessing it will be accessible to the public during daytime hours and closed at night to non-residents like some other POPOS downtown.

You can spot Mission Rock from Corona Heights. It's the tallest in its area, but overall not much skyline impact. Hopefully Central SoMa gets going soon to help fill in the space and provide a nice taper down to Mission Rock.

Retail Line-Up Revealed For Mission Rock, San Francisco

BY: ANDREW NELSON 5:30 AM ON AUGUST 18, 2023

Mission Rock Partners has announced the first round of retail tenants to move into the nearly-complete phase one of Mission Rock at San Francisco’s Mission Bay waterfront. The five San Francisco-based tenants include two restaurants, a bakery, an outdoor gym, and a barbershop. Doors are expected to start opening in early 2024.

Mission Rock Partners is a joint collaboration between the San Francisco Giants, Tishman Speyer, and the Port of San Francisco. The new shops will occupy around 11,000 square feet across the four new buildings. CBRE has been responsible for retail leasing. Mission Rock Partners shared descriptions for all five new tenants listed below:

- Arsicault Bakery, the San Francisco bakery whose croissants have been recognized among the best in the country. It will open its third Bay Area location at Dr. Maya Angelou Lane and Mission Rock Square in Building F, Mission Rock’s second residential tower.

- Blades Co. Barbershop, which offers high-end men’s haircuts and spa treatments by masterful barbers. Blades will bring its third Bay Area shop to Building B, a commercial tower designed to accommodate life sciences research and development, adjacent to Dr. Maya Angelou Lane.

- Ike’s Love & Sandwiches, the San Francisco-born favorite, is known for lines around the block, craveable secret ingredients and inventive flavor combinations inspired by notable local figures. Their store at Building B on Third Street at Toni Stone Crossing will be their milestone 100th location and a new flagship for the brand that was founded in the Castro.

- LuxFit, San Francisco’s premier outdoor gym offering personal training, group classes and a self-service open gym. It will open its first brick-and-mortar location in Building B, adjacent to Channel Street.

- Proper Food, which offers its delicious and wholesome grab-and-go fare from locations across San Francisco and New York City. Its newest shop will be in the base of Visa’s global and North American headquarters adjacent to Dr. Maya Angelou Lane.
