Every time I visit Farm Boys on Metcalfe or in Westboro, I'm amazed how busy they are.

Why other grocery chains are not jumping on these opportunities is beyond me.

Looks like it wont be a Metro or IGA afterall

That's great news. It will be nice having something that's not yet another chain.

Not sure... Most "independent" grocery stores I've seen are kinda sad-looking.

Besides, there is an independent grocery store literally a block away. At least that's how they advertise: https://maps.app.goo.gl/4TMC1WQEZodDfJSUA

I wouldn't really call that place a grocery store.

Marché Laflamme in Aylmer is more or less independent.. even though all of their stuff is IGA/Sobeys branded.

Well let's hope they can plow through a few years in the red. 50 employees is a lot.

It's a grocery store if your diet is mainly specialty jam. It's more a specialty store for local food products, I lived nearby and if I needed stuff it was corner store or Monette, which has 3 sad looking steaks and maybe 2 veggies if you're lucky.

The article mentions a size of 20 000 sqft, which is almost twice the size of Marché Laflamme or the Glebe Metro, and bigger than most Farmboy as far as I can tell quickly.

Hull getting its 1st supermarket since 1999
Independent grocer set to open in 2024, followed by a grocery co-op in 2025

Anchal Sharma · CBC News
Posted: Oct 10, 2023 4:00 AM EDT | Last Updated: 24 minutes ago

A new grocery store is coming to Hull next spring, the first supermarket to open in the downtown Gatineau, Que., neighbourhood in more than two decades.

The independent business, Saveurs, is set to open in May 2024 on the ground floor of a condominium building at the corner of rues Wellington and Eddy.

The last supermarket in the area closed in 1999.

According to Hull-Wright Coun. Steve Moran, previous efforts to attract a similar store to the community have failed due to concerns from big chains about the profitability of launching a business in the lower-income neighbourhood.

"It's a big deal that we're going to have a grocery store that's willing to take the risk and say, 'You know what? We believe in the local economy … and we're going to serve the people of downtown Hull.'"

The area has been labelled a "food desert" by residents, some of whom rely on convenience stores, co-ops and restaurants for meals and have to travel outside the community for everyday groceries.

"There's a lot of poor people in the area, and having to pay [for a taxi to go grocery shopping] is very expensive," said Réjean Laflamme, chair of community group Coopérative de solidarité de l'épicerie de l'Île-de-Hull.

Laflamme hopes the arrival of Saveurs will help, but he's not sure whether the new grocery store's prices will be affordable enough.

Still, he maintains that any new grocery store in the neighbourhood will be good news to residents.

Moran said he understands the concerns around affordability.

"If we were to bring in a grocery store that only served the upper end of the spectrum then it would [still] be a food desert, but only for people who can't afford to shop there," he said.

Moran says he's confident that Dany Plante, the owner of the new store, is committed to working with the community.

"He's already in discussions with local community groups," Moran said.

"And the fact that it's not a big chain [means] they also have the ability to adapt their offering to make sure it responds to the people who live downtown."

CBC has tried to reach Plante but has not heard back.

Laflamme's group has been trying to open an affordable grocery store in the area since 2006.

"Every time there was something wrong … but this time I think we have everything in place and we should be going to the construction phase in 2024," Laflamme said.

In 2021, Gatineau's city council voted to reserve city land for a grocery store in the neighbourhood. The land being allocated to the co-op is behind the Robert Guertin Centre on the corner of rues St-Rédempteur and Allard.

The store will be located on the ground floor of a social housing building with 107 units and will include a pharmacy. It's slated to open in 2025.

Can't help but to compare with Claridge Moon. The podium on this one (well, the entire project) is so much better. The grocery store's all glass facade will really stand out as a neighbourhood staple.

I got laughed out of the room last time I said this, but I'll say it again regardless: the Québec side is building higher quality on average than the Ottawa side. The three new midrises in Aylmer, Agora/Nuuvo/Centrale/Nox in the Plateau, the new curvy midrise going up on St. Raymond, the WE project, Le Viu 1/2, The new angular white building by the MacDonald-Cartier bridge : all far nicer than the average Ottawa building. There are some dogs too, like Columbia and the new one going up in Gatineau proper. We'll see how Bloome, Eleanore, and Zen turn out soon.

I agree in general. The larger projects are nicer. The smaller ones (low rises), not so much. And then you have Zibi, which looks great on the Ottawa side, not so much on the Hull side.

The St-Rédempteur and Allard store in a coop building. Do we have a fleshed out proposal for this building? If they want it open by 2025, construction should start last year.

Is Zibi Quebec worse than the average Ottawa development though? Looking at the monstrosities in Kanata, all the CharcWhites, Tamarack Flora, Charcling Avenue, Wild n' Wacky Brick Royale/Moon, that new 25 story cinder block on Slater, Wish.com Rideau Marriot, the Envie projects, and so so many others. Zibi in Québec is pedestrian but not as offensive to me as the average Ottawa development. Ottawa has some good to great stuff going on, but few and far between. I feel like this century's midrise-to-highrise projects in Gatineau are 75% decent, and in Ottawa maybe 25%.

Fair. Though Aalto's podium for me is quite possibly the worst in town.

They've dug the hole for phase 2 months ago but since then, absolutely no activity for that taller tower.
