It reminds me of the Eaton Centre in Toronto, and you're right, a unique spot in Hamilton with a lot of beauty to it. I hope in one way or another that the new construction to be whatever that is, incorporates this part for those reasons. Though I have a feeling it won't be.

That's because it was the Eatons Center in hamilton haha - at least they were consistent in their grandiosity

I am all for modern development - I just feel from a design perspective most of it isn't ambitious enough - the Eatons Center was beautiful in that sort of ambition - of all the light it lets in. Id love to see whatever is built here incorporate something like that. I'd like to see some elegance return - class not just glass.

I still remember the days of the giant window displays of Eatons - where people went all out around christmas time. I'd love to see a return to those times.

Yes, old should be new again with that.

watching the GIC on cable 14. Never saw a more exciting meeting. Vrancor, Carmens Group and the south side parking lot of City Hall, Pearle Group that didn't pitch. Watch council blow between 500-750 million dollars of development downtown in a concentrated area that will completely change the way people experience. I'll go for anyone of them. It's all good and call it the biggest change downtown since Jackson Square. It's good see this much interest in Hamilton.

Heading in front of the DRP. This is in Nova Res Urbis, apologies for the low quality:

3x30s, 1x24s, 2,068 units. 30,000sf of retail.

I won't get too excited, as the devil is in the details. I first need to see how the streetscape will look like, storefront retail? And what will happen to the clock tower?

The crappy (imo) clock tower seems like it'll be demolished.

There is street fronting retail by the looks of it, but it could probably be increased. 30,000sf isn't a ton for the size of the site.

Agreed on streetscaping.

A teensy bit bland... but very welcome. Its the perfect spot for something taller, even the 40-50fl range, but oh well. This is an absolutely massive project thats gonna bring hundreds of residents and plenty of retail to the core. This might even prompt a jackson square facelift. Also, as far as I can tell, this meets all zoning recquirements. Can't see the city turning it down.

It's just a matter of if the market demand is there for it. I imagine it'll be phased.

The good news is that IN8 seems very good at selling stuff - they focus on investor clientele.

The clock tower has a heritage designation. It's the old City Hall clock tower. The developer will probably have to take it down and hand it over to the City at their expense.

I'm excited to see this finally surface. This is going to be a great addition of density to the downtown. Hopefully some street-level retail is in the plans

The view in that image is facing west from what I can deduce. This would put the current clock tower at the foot of the rightmost tower in the image, so it looks like it'll be gone. Hopefully we get to see a site plan soon for this project, I can't wait to pop this one into the skyline model.

More than teensy in my opinion. This has a very "suburban" look to me.

It will probably get a thorough kicking by the DRP, but as far as the scale and height I don't think those will be much of an issue. Perhaps some more variation in the podium would help, and towers that are less like slabs?

First cut though, so I imagine it will change. But it's great to finally see this kind of movement!

The tower was new when the EC was built -- that's not the same one from the old city hall. But the clock itself may be original?

Yes, the bell, the mechanism, and the clock face is all original.

Yes they had to keep the clock face and mechanism from the old city hall tower- that was part of the agreement.

kinda like they had to keep the clock that was on the corner of king and james on the south east side that is now in the farmers market.

Absolutely hideous suburban design (really hope this is just a placeholder until the real one is revealed) but I love the density!

At least one of these towers really needs to be 50+ floors being in the absolute core of downtown, like seriously come on!!! They should shoot for 80+ and settle on 60.

That amount of density would be a boon for Jackson Square, will definitely welcome some AAA retail in the core!

Eww gross! A huge property in the very middle of downtown with a proposed 114 storeys and the proposal is 114% mediocrity. I find this quite embarrassing. I’ll wait to see some more drawings but as of now, unimpressed.

What I'm interested in is how this will interact with the roof of Jackson Square, at the moment the Eaton Centre might as well be seperate, they mesh horribly.

Yes very uninspiring - destroy a beautiful art deco building and replace it with mediocrity - it's like the only feature of it that is impactful is the fact that it's BIG.

This is the core of the downtown - you're gonna have to step up the wow factor a bit.
