I believe you need hipsterdom explained in comic form.

We'll see you in a week or so.

I for one don't wear that style but I definitely don't discriminate people from what they wear and don't use that excuse to avoid a certain party or concert venue that has people dressing like that. What the hell is wrong with people these days!?

"Oh I can't go to the venue on that night because there is a concert by The Killers and too many hipsters will be there. They ruin everything!"

Its truly really sad....
thats not whats i am saying or trying to say but if you go to a certain place you will see certain people and it is well known that hipsters are incliced to be found at a place like the biltmore more so than venue night club etc.

as long as i have been going out in vancouver since the early 90's vancouver has always been a scene kind of place - i followed the goth set a lot so i was used to them - but bascially monday night you go to Club A and you see these people and than on tuesday you go to Club B and you see the same people, and it goes on the same the whole week - they follow the scene they like and they stick to it - its pretty well known - most of the clubs I knew are gone but back in the day if you went to luv affair on a thursday for instance you would see a certain crowd you go to Luv Affair the next night and its a completely different crowd and so on and so on - the crowd would go to wherever whatever venue cause they knew CLub x would play this kind of music on that night and that the next night it would play music they don't liek so they avoid it

its just the way it is - and I have spoken to people from out of town who don't get it - they come to visit and they said I had the best night of my life last night at this club and tonight just blows

I can go out and know where to go and predict pretty much accurately who i will see as everytime I go i see them - myabe thats why outsiders say vancouver people are so cliquey and not friendly I don't know - its very scene driven

i look at hipsters like this - every few years something comes along and they are the butt of jokes and pop commentary etc, - at one point it was gen xer's who gave way to slackers, who gave way to gen y'ers who gave way to i don't know and the current one is hipsters which is fading fast and some new group will come along and replace hipsters and it just keeps going

honestly how have you guys never heard of hipsters? How old are you? It's not like it's a vancouver thing or anything.
no kidding! I thought everyone knew the word.

If ya'll want some examples of hipsters, just hang out on Main Street in Mount Pleasant.
Like what was said earlier though, there are some genuine hipsters who dress the way they do and listen to the music they listen to and go where they want because they really like to, and others who are just sheep. Just like any genre of 'sub-culture' people I guess.

I got this book a while back and it's quite funny although sightly dated now, but so tongue in cheek called The Hipster Handbook. Here's the website:

I must go out only on douchebag night.

Hipsters, while insufferable in their own right, are at least harmless.

Until you pull out a Blackberry instead of an iPhone or something. You know, something so morally wrong and against the "code".

I thought the term "hipsters" originated in NYC. It is a VERY well known term at least in the North Eastern USA. They have their own neighborhoods in New York!

Well thats really the difference between a scenester and a hipster. Hipsters are often just really into whatever it may be they happen to be hip to... while scenesters just follow a crowd and try to emulate the prevalent style and mannerisms.

Oh man, Luvafair - my old stomping grounds! Thursday nights for Brit pop, and then over to the Purple Onion on Sundays for Sanctuary, and it was the same crowd. Then Luvafair shut, and everyone was displaced, but somehow ended up at the Marble Arch and Mod Club. Etc, etc. Of course, I'm dating myself now... that's a snippet of Vancouver nightlife circa 2001-2003!

But yeah, for hipsters?

Nothing screams hipster than Main Street/Mount Pleasant on a sunny Sunday afternoon! That, and the Biltmore for Glory Days on Saturday nights.

If you want the definition of hipster, browse www.lindsaysdiet.com for inspiration.

An aside: I wonder if the term "hipster" isn't known by our Montrealer friend simply because Montreal tends to have its own vocabulary apart from the typical North American status quo. It's a possibility...

p.s. SpongeG, I'm envious that you made it to the Florence + the Machine show. Super, super envious.

Sanctuary is still around and when I go I don't feel nearly as old as, say oh, The Biltmore for Glory Days...

this sounds interesting - underground midnight tea

http://www.mikokuro.com/

Quote:
MKMT is an undergound art happening which began as a monthly community event in downtown Vancouver. Participants, guests, featured artists, and MKMT staff collaborate to co-create a magical once-in-a-lifetime event. Each tea event is videotaped and photographed as part of a feature-length documentary and exhibition books. Guest artists from around the world have contributed their time and talents to this endeavor. To submit a collaborative proposal, please email [email protected].

The project in it's entirety is the conceptual art of Natasha Marin, who seeks to create anti-exclusive art experiences that honor the tradition of the Japanese Tea Ceremony. Please note: this project would not be possible without the significant contributions of all those who participate. Special thanks go to: Kelly O, Lord Loxley, Dafang Jiang, Jamie Lee Fuoco, Oliver Strong and Chloe R. whose professionalism and dedication are unrivaled.

The first Midnight Tea was held on December 13, 2008. It was freezing. But it was beautiful.

I just came across this new Bar/Lounge they added in the Plateau of Montreal. Looks really cool and original!

Vancouver should def try to change it up a bit and try these cool things out. God knows Vancouver's nightlife needs it!!!

Check it out here:

But doesn't every bar/club/lounge vow to be different from other ones?
It is not sapposed to be like other bars and lounges. These places always have a theme. I understand that some have different tastes. But saying it isn't classy is funny cuz its not sapposed to be classy! Go to church if you wanna be classy.

What Paulo Branco has done for his other hotspots like Chez Serge and Go Go Lounge is . I love the concept behind it. It is really clever. Especially where it is situated on Mount Royal st.

For Vancouver it would be refreshing and ...dare I say different.

Chez Serge has a mechanical bull to ride in the middle of the bar. Its awesome. GoGo is like Coyote Ugly with the long bar and awesome crowd of people dancing on the bar.

I find it pretty cool how the nightlife has evolved and trying new things doesn't. Just like when Barcelona opened here. There should be more places like this. 560 has been a huge disappointment to many people apparently.

I forgot to mention that The Modern is having its Grand Re-opening tonight.
It is now called Post Modern Dance Bar and inside there vintage video games all over the place.

Maybe not classy enough for delboy though.

There isn't a pure venue for the post-25 crowd ever since the closure of Skybar. 560 is technically one for the older crowds, but still...
