This LRT project is a good move.

Even this quasi-mass/rapid transit is most welcome in North Scarborough. This connects to both the Don Mills Subway and GO Train Stations. Aso, the Zoo and UofT-Scarborough on the line.

It's great that so much focus is being put on public transit in Toronto, but I wish that instead of dumping so much money into the suburbs where people are more liable to drive they'd put funding into a more highly needed downtown relief line or Eglinton subway. My rush-hour rides on the Yonge subway were more crowded than any train I've been on in the notoriously busy Tokyo system.
Rightly or wrongly, The Sheppard subway exists. We may as well complete the loop and possibly relieve pressure on both the RT line and Yonge subway. (especially if Don Mills gets built)

What I really want is the downtown relief subway line. Sooooo badly needed in Toronto.

Yep. The overcrowding of the Yonge line is becoming critical and the central part of B-D isn't much better. At least a proper study should begin soon.

That being said, the extension of rail based transit into north Scarborough is a great move, both politically and practically. While bus service in the area (as anywhere in Toronto) is great, north Scarborough residents tend to feel ignored when it comes to large scale transit projects - or investment in general. And rightly so.

I always thought all those Hydro corridors that crisscross Toronto would make great Light Rail routes. Some of them, like the one that goes diagonally from Pickering and Northeast Scarborough to Eglinton and the Don Valley Parkway would be a perfect way to funnel the 905ers and Scarberians to the core.

Another crosses parallel to McNicoll completely across Scarborough and North York to highway 400.

If I knew how to link Google Maps, I could demonstrate the swath these Hydro rights of way cut through Toronto.

Additionally, there would be far less disruption to traffic and neighbourhoods because the path is cleared and ready to go. Plus there is already unlimited electricity available to power the trains!

Just a thought, I'm sure there are too many nimby's and other reasons that it would be a bad idea.

^indeed. I have always thought the same thing. Those pylon right-aways are not at all common on Montreal Island, but I seem to see them everywhere in Toronto.

I moved from Yonge-St. Clair to Bathurst and Harbord partially because how unbearable it was to commute by the Yonge line. Horribly overcrowded and absolutely mired in delays, particularly in the winter. God I enjoy walking to work compared to having to deal with TTC bullshit on a daily basis.

East-West hydro corridor between Steeles and Finch

The SW to NE corridor from Don Valley to north Pickering

Corridor in Etobicoke parallel to the 427, this bends to the northeast near the airport and joins the corridor between Steeles and Finch.

They look a little removed from high density nodes but there is potential.

Thanks vidilicious! That's exactly what I wanted to link. Also, now that the updated Google satellite images were taken in spring or summer, the green of the Hydro rights of way really stand out!

That Etobicoke one goes from the end of the subway line at Kipling almost right to the airport... How perfect would that be for an LRT???

Thanks again!

The BD line coming in from Scarborough ain't much better. I avoid it by taking the GO. It's a longer walk and a few bits more per trip but I save 45 minutes and a whole lot of aggravation.

Gotransit.com

I think that GO could be an alternative to a DRL when the LRTs are finished and we finally have the one fare plan. Like the way RER works in Paris.

Does GO even have plans to open up the other routes to non rush hour commuter service? That would make one amazing network.

Wow, I had no idea how perfect those electricity pylon corridors would be, especially for an airport train.

During the 80's before I was 'green' conscious, I thought they would make great expressway routes. I would mutter to myself as I was stuck in traffic and drove by one...

"If this were Detroit, they would have put an expressway there!"

But today, with a more earth friendly attitude, I think: 'What a missed opportunity for extra LRT lines!'

We will need to buy a shitload more streetcars, when this transit city program is fully realized. I would also like to see how modern and slick these cars are in motion.

Hey Caltrane, I scanned through this thread and can't believe no one posted The TTC's Transit City video showing all their plans. You can see some cool animation of how the new trains will look.

The official TTC Transit City website has the video on it:

OR

The YouTube link to it is:

I love the fact that there's no separated cars! Can't wait.

Well people who only travel on the green line don't hear it (older model I think?)
