Notice how they are putting so much money towards a lot of retail in the city that we are slowly losing more of the industries now.

When I asked at Coles before they closed if they had planned on re-opening, they said no. She didn't say if it was coming back as a Chapters though. Notice how they changed the WH Smith at Eastgate not long ago to Coles. They are all owned by Coles though.

Would be nice to see a Michaels Craft store in Hamilton. And yes we need more movie theatres after losing so many over the years.

I wonder how many people will head to Centre Mall to go to Sears, only to remember it moved to Eastgate. LOL I heard Sears is closing their catalog calling centre and putting it in Montreal after the move. I guess that is one way of them downsizing somewhat.

I wonder if less people will shop there after it goes open again. Be interesting to see all the changes and how it's all going to work out in the end.

Coles and WH Smith previously used to co-exist just a few shops away from each other in Eastgate. The two stores were collapsed into one --- the WH Smith store was closed and the Coles was moved into its spot.

Actually the call centre that was closed at Sears Centre Mall was the service/maintenance agreement call centre.

I think Michaels is going in the new power centre at the top of the Red Hill Parkway.

I was in one of the mall stores a few months ago while they were having their closing sale. One of the customers had no idea that the mall was being redeveloped and was asking the owner why she was closing. The customer went on to say that they didn't need big box stores in the area, people wouldn't shop at those fancy stores.

Now it's my understanding that the big stores going at the back of the property will be Zellers, Canadian Tire, a grocery store - possibly Real Canadian Superstore, and one other store. Other than Sears, and the grocery store banner, how is htat different that the large stores that are their now?

Hope you're right about the Real Canadian Superstore. Now there's a big box I could live with.

I'm really hoping for a Superstore too. I wasn't sure if they'd put one in Hamilton as there seems to be a Fortinos monopoly here from the Loblaw group of stores.

Yes, now that I'm in Hamilton I really miss walking the aisles of that store (Eglinton & DVP/Don Mills was the old one) and finding them out-of-stock on many of the items on my grocery list.

One of the few (if not the only) grocery stores I've just put down my basket in the middle of an aisle, and walked out of in frustration after getting to the next out-of-stock item on my list. And it kept happening again and again......

As far as I know it will definitely be a Real Canadian Superstore--which is a different format than Fortinos--which is a "traditional" supermarket. Loblaw is overlaying the RCSS stores with other brands--Windsor/Essex County is a "Zehrs" market for instance--however, there is also an RCSS here. In fact, one of the larger Zehrs units is being converted to the Superstore format. Therefore, just because Hamilton is "Fortinos" market for Loblaw, doesn't preclude RCSS being introduced. Important to note that Superstore operates differently than the traditional Loblaw chains as far as labor costs go--UFCW agreed to a deal allowing more Superstores to be built--with non-grocery employees earning a lower-wage scale. Loblaw has intended all along to use RCSS as a direct challenge to Wal*Mart's Supercentre concept.

My daughter received a letter from TD Canada Trust at the Centre Mall, her bank. They where advising clients that they will open at the new branch building at the corner of Barton and Kenilworth on Monday November 24th. The last day for the old one will be Friday November 21st.

Construction is well underway on a number of structures on the property now. The steel frame is up for the TD Canada Trust on the corner and foundations are being prepared for other future structures right up against Barton.

I will get pictures this week, hopefully including what is left of Centre Mall itself.

Thanks LikeHamilton!

The building to the very left, next to the new Zellers I believe is new. Looks different. Anybody know what that building will be? Looks like an old Train terminal.

Wow... it's worse than I thought

I'm really really depressed about this project. Look at that TD corner... it's a drive-thru!!!

And is that what Redcliffe calls a streetwall?? They revised their original plans for THAT? Wow.

That train station-looking building may actually be a GO station. Wasn't there talks of this before? But at the same time, I have seen 1 or 2 Loblaws stores in Toronto w/ that style

Can't be a GO Station as it'll be too close from the new James St North GO Station.

With the proper spacing it'll likely go Aldershot....James St N....Centennial....Fifty....(future Grimsby)....who knows at this point.

I think it looks fine. I never expected anything but big box anyway, neither do I mind. It will still do a lot to fix up the surrounding area whether or not theres a ton of parking and stucco boxes.

That wood building looks like one of those big outdoors stores. I don't know what it is called but there is one at the Vaughn Mills Mall.

Likely a Real Canadian Superstore. Looks like the ones in Oakville and St Grimsby. If it were a train station, We won't see a 90,000 square foot staion.
