Heard a rumor that this building was being looked at by Hyatt (think that's who)... But it was just a rumor.

Does that mean it was false? Or just never verified as true?

Since the 17th Street Hotel has been confirmed as another Hilton Garden Inn (blech) The Avenue would be another great spot for a Centric. Honestly, it would give Hyatt a really strong presence in DT -- they'd have the Hyatt Regency, the Hyatt Place, The Hyatt House, The Driskill, The Thompson/tommie, and then the Avenue Centric. That's a bunch of Hyatt brand action right there.

I was told it was definitely going to be a hotel, but I honestly don't remember the brand (Hyatt, Hilton, some other "H" company...) It's been a few months ago...

I've had a "few" drinks since then and things are blurry...

Original general contractor that I bid this project to is no longer involved. A 2nd GC is looking at it.

Didn't the Hyatt branded boutique hotel Andaz plan on an Austin property where Concordia Univ. used to be located? Maybe they still want an Austin location....

Doesn't matter what Andaz might want unless they are willing to pay for it, and that is not how hotel projects usually happen. Developers got cold feet at this location. The no parking apartment project was very sexy, and I think it could have been a winner.

This project should never have been turned into a hotel to begin with. Because of this mess we may likely never see this proposal happen.

It's a Hyatt Centric Hotel with a "mid-year" groundbreaking.

An excavation permit for new utilities was filed today. 8th St. addressing is used, and it's not obvious that the permit is for The Avenue. But the referenced approved site plan on the filing is for The Avenue.

8th at Congress has two lanes blocked off; fencing is up; and there’s a digger onsite. Demolition imminent!

This is amazing news! Such a game-changer for the area!! Now if we can just get Congress to not be a six-lane auto monster....

Assuming it really happens, this will easily be our skinniest high rise. There really is no other building like it in Austin.

This work may be just to tear up the street for the utility work permitted in my last post. Their demo permit expired in December, and I didn't see a new one filed - at least not one using the 721 Congress address.

That's definitely possible. And I meant to correct my post a bit: they haven't put up actual fencing per se, but have two lanes blocked off with those low orange and white barriers.

Now that I think about it, it's almost certainly for the utility work. Still: progress!

September groundbreaking per this unusually long ABJ article about The Avenue:

this is truly the most exciting time to watch downtown Austin grow.

the pace and breadth of construction cannot be over hyped.

Given the fact that the Austonian and Four Seasons both started in spite of and in the middle of a HUGE economic downturn....when the inevitable correction hits.....I wouldn't be surprised if we only lost a few projects.

can't wait to see the skyline in 5 years.
