The Texas Workforce Commission's WARN notices show the following layoffs for ytd 2020:

Austin 4,409
Cedar Park 102
Round Rock 398
Pflugerville 198
TOTAL: 5,107

The actuals are probably much larger. That's just the tally from companies that filed WARN notices with TWC. https://www.twc.texas.gov/businesses...n-warn-notices

The IBM layoff is missing. The large companies know who to avoid having to file WARN notices, they tend to layoff regularly with numbers just below those required for filing a warning, that is probably why you don't see the big companies here. IBM has had a layoff the last four years in the spring time and quite a few before that too.

Elon Musk’s Neuralink Looks to Expand Beyond Silicon Valley to Texas: The startup is recruiting engineers in Austin, Texas, home to a competitor and the site of a forthcoming Tesla plant.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...n-austin-texas

Not many jobs so far, but maybe sign of things to come in future.

"Job postings on the company’s website list four positions in Austin: three in engineering and one in accounting."

Nice find. It's good to see that Elon is focused on Texas for his ventures. But I don't think the Tesla HQ move is too much of a thing anymore.

We have a number of folks who cited this month as timing for that HQ announcement for a Tesla moving here.

Tik Tok sells to Oracle, so maybe Austin will get those jobs after all.

Plus Oracle just started the permitting process for a third office building on their campus.

More layoffs being announced today. This will affect some Austin jobs - but, it's global in nature.

The number: ~5% of global workforce (~6,500).

NXP is not really laying off but once they finish the contracts that they have they will be closing the Oak hill factory. Could take as long as three years though.

Damn, seriously? That would be a shame. My mother has a memorial plaque there, I don't know if it survived the Freescale > NXP transfer but I hope that place keeps kicking. There's probably still demand for a chip fab here, even if NXP leaves, but still.

Amazon is hiring 1.7K in the Austin area per a new ABJ article:

https://www.bizjournals.com/austin/n..._news_headline

But we already knew they would be hiring somewhere around that number because it is mostly for their new facilities in P'vill, Round Rock, Buda and Kyle.

More TikTok, sorrynotsorry . . .

KXAN has some interesting reporting on the Oracle deal -- as far as I can tell it's the only news source that's saying the global hq could be based in Texas. I'd dismiss it normally . . it's entirely based on a speculative tweet from Gov Abbott -- but I'd say we're starting to see some arrows align in that direction, along with some of the stuff that predated all the Trump administration idiocy.

All of this is contingent on the Chinese government’s blessing.

Various news sources say the new "TikTok Global will be incorporated in Texas." I haven' seen anything other than speculation about the HQ location. But I would think Dallas or Austin are the two most likely locations.
