At the end of their lease, the contents of Gene Colvin’s candy factory and beer parlor are put up for auction. The repeal of prohibition probably helped buoy the business, but the Great Depression was still in full swing.http://www.lamag.com/askchris/compre...everly-cinema/

Although NLA references have also mentioned "Slapsy Maxie's" in connection with this
7165 Beverly Blvd. location, I can't recall seeing the below image on NLA. (For any number of reasons, most tend to associate Slapsy's with
5665 Wilshire, e.g.,
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=3770.) The source suggests this image is from 1937. Another source suggests Slapsy's "
actually operated in
1939 at 7165 Beverly Blvd. . . . "
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxie_...om#cite_note-9 Not that permits are the definitive guide, but there is a gap from '35 until '39, the latter date - bearing Maxie's name
as owner and includes improvements, e.g., a neon sign. FWIW, "
B.B. Mallicoat" is listed for
7165 1/2 Beverly Blvd. in the '38CD, unknown whether this name is "connected" with Maxie -
or some other person previously mentioned in NLA named Mickey. vvvv . Maxie does however appear twice in the '39CD under that address, including "Maxie Liquors." The '42CD list's "Rosenbloom, Maxie rest[aurant]."

But wait, there's more?

Years earlier, the house had been Slapsie Maxie's, a nightclub named for the boxer and, later, actor Slapsie(sic) Maxie Rosenbloom (model for the Big Jule role in "Guys and Dolls" on Broadway). The club then was managed by Charlie and Sy Devore, clothiers to the Rat Pack, and actually was owned by mobster Mickey Cohen. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...-torgan-144071

Max had a prolific stage and screen career outside of the Ring. No idea whether he appeared with
Vernon Dent, but here is his IMDB listing.

This appears to be MR in a 1951 Guys and Dolls production, along with
Alan Jones and
Jan Clayton. No location provided, but presumed So Cal.

In a seemingly noirish pose, Max tends bar in "I Married a Monster from Outer Space".
