After tovangar2 highlighted some of William H Harrison's other designs yesterday, I thought I'd post some Julius Shulman pictures of at least one of them. This is "Job 1554: William H. Harrison, El Rancho High School (Pico Rivera, Calif.),1953".

This must be looking down the back of the building above.

The single story buildings at the back are at an angle to the main block.

The last shot shows one of the classrooms. You can sure tell the era!

All from Getty Research Institute

They've added a curved entrance and clock tower to the school at 6501 Passons Boulevard, but it all matches in.

There's a great site re: San Francisco noir, and it features Bunker Hill shots because they were supposed to stand in for SF. Lots of then-n-nows. Check it out here.

The author also looks at The Exiles, and there's a bit of 2nd & Olive in Days of Wine and Roses.

Sudden Fear is also dealt with by Dawson, see here from here.

that's because they're both from 1912, and both by Meyer & Holler.

The demo permit for 511 W 31st Street is dated earlier this year, but note that it says "foundation only" and that the "building has been relocated under permit no. 15012-10000-00011."

The relocation permit says it was moved to 122 N Avenue 63.

The permit also mentions converting the house from SFD (single family dwelling) to an accessory living quarters. I've had a look around that block from the Googlemobile, but couldn't spot it. Having said that, there are a lot of trees, so it could be in there somewhere.

I'm glad the Stewart place has been saved (no sign of it on google maps yet), but I was hoping it would end up somewhere more public.

Noticed a "comprehensive" history of the New Beverly Cinema: http://www.lamag.com/askchris/compre...everly-cinema/ The article mentions "Colvin's [Beverly Winery] beer parlor"

Quote:
October 21, 1934
At the end of their lease, the contents of Gene Colvin’s candy factory and beer parlor are put up for auction. The repeal of prohibition probably helped buoy the business, but the Great Depression was still in full swing.http://www.lamag.com/askchris/compre...everly-cinema/
Although NLA references have also mentioned "Slapsy Maxie's" in connection with this 7165 Beverly Blvd. location, I can't recall seeing the below image on NLA. (For any number of reasons, most tend to associate Slapsy's with 5665 Wilshire, e.g., http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=3770.) The source suggests this image is from 1937. Another source suggests Slapsy's "actually operated in 1939 at 7165 Beverly Blvd. . . . " https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxie_...om#cite_note-9 Not that permits are the definitive guide, but there is a gap from '35 until '39, the latter date - bearing Maxie's name as owner and includes improvements, e.g., a neon sign. FWIW, "B.B. Mallicoat" is listed for 7165 1/2 Beverly Blvd. in the '38CD, unknown whether this name is "connected" with Maxie - or some other person previously mentioned in NLA named Mickey. vvvv . Maxie does however appear twice in the '39CD under that address, including "Maxie Liquors." The '42CD list's "Rosenbloom, Maxie rest[aurant]."

http://www.lamag.com/askchris/compre...everly-cinema/

But wait, there's more?
Quote:
Years earlier, the house had been Slapsie Maxie's, a nightclub named for the boxer and, later, actor Slapsie(sic) Maxie Rosenbloom (model for the Big Jule role in "Guys and Dolls" on Broadway). The club then was managed by Charlie and Sy Devore, clothiers to the Rat Pack, and actually was owned by mobster Mickey Cohen. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...-torgan-144071

Maxie Rosenbloom in '41

Max had a prolific stage and screen career outside of the Ring. No idea whether he appeared with Vernon Dent, but here is his IMDB listing. http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/co...oll44/id/14086

This appears to be MR in a 1951 Guys and Dolls production, along with Alan Jones and Jan Clayton. No location provided, but presumed So Cal.

The house seen here is obviously not the Stewart house, but I knew we'd seen it before--- it was seen in post 17851...but the pictures have gone missing. I believe there was some discussion about the owner of this house being sort of a collector of dwellings....

The main house is the 1886 Dr John Lawrence Smith residence. (It was enlarged in 1925). Article w/ pix here

The second story is part of the addition:

The smaller, plainer house (below) on the property was built in 1905 (or 1910):

The Lawrence property appears to be all rentals (multiple units in the larger home and the 2nd house). There are three entrance gates.
(The owner, btw, lives in Whitley Heights.)

John Lawrence Smith was a doctor and a horticulturalist. John Marcellus Stewart was a gold miner and nurseryman. They'll probably get along fine.

I can't wait to see the Stewart home in place.

Thank you again so much HossC for finding the address and the owner's name.

I saw Sudden Fear also, What an interesting movie that really kept you on the edge of your seat! The way the scenes were set up and shot made me nervous. The little toy dog walking toward the closet where Joan Crawford was hiding, or the chain on the fence when Jack Palance was driving trying to find her. But most spectacular was at the end of the movie when she is walking up the street she tosses her scarf to the gutter, she is just gorgeous!

I thought I'd post Julius Shulman pictures of another William H Harrison design today. Looking back, I also posted Julius Shulman pictures of Mr Harrison's Sierra High School back in October. This is "Job 3790: William H. Harrison, Charles Samuels School District (Whittier, Calif.), 1964".

Here's a closer view of the building on the right.

A nice view down the covered walkway.

I thought this color image showed the inside of the building in the second picture, but now I think it's the one at the end of the covered walkway.

All from Getty Research Institute

I found Charles T Samuels Elementary listed at 12214 Oxford Drive, La Mirada, although Google Maps seems to show it as Heights Christian Schools La Mirada Campus. The square building with the blue roof in the lower-left corner wasn't there in 1964, but the rest of the site looks fairly original.

I'm familiar with this location. That arch leads to Mt. Lee, which in turn takes you to the Hollywood sign.

Now we know why the owner asked for, and got, permit permission to "shift the patio cover [AKA the wraparound porch] to the opposite side"

Today's Julius Shulman post takes us back to Long Beach. It's "Job 3261: Hugh Gibbs, Texaco, inc. Field Office Building (Long Beach, Calif.), 1961".

Here's a close-up of the entrance.

The reception area and switchboard.

It looks like the offices were very close to a refinery.

All from Getty Research Institute

Although I didn't find a direct connection with Texaco, I think the building is now part of the Tesoro refinery at 2101 E Pacific Coast Highway, Wilmington. The entrance and a few other details have changed, but the overall size and shape are a good match.
