After tovangar2 highlighted some of William H Harrison's other designs yesterday, I thought I'd post some Julius Shulman pictures of at least one of them. This is "Job 1554: William H. Harrison, El Rancho High School (Pico Rivera, Calif.),1953".



This must be looking down the back of the building above.



The single story buildings at the back are at an angle to the main block.



The last shot shows one of the classrooms. You can sure tell the era!

They've added a curved entrance and clock tower to the school at 6501 Passons Boulevard, but it all matches in.

Although NLA references have also mentioned "Slapsy Maxie's" in connection with this 7165 Beverly Blvd. location, I can't recall seeing the below image on NLA. (For any number of reasons, most tend to associate Slapsy's with 5665 Wilshire, e.g., http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=3770.) The source suggests this image is from 1937. Another source suggests Slapsy's "actually operated in 1939 at 7165 Beverly Blvd. . . . " https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxie_...om#cite_note-9 Not that permits are the definitive guide, but there is a gap from '35 until '39, the latter date - bearing Maxie's name as owner and includes improvements, e.g., a neon sign. FWIW, "B.B. Mallicoat" is listed for 7165 1/2 Beverly Blvd. in the '38CD, unknown whether this name is "connected" with Maxie - or some other person previously mentioned in NLA named Mickey. vvvv . The house seen here is obviously not the Stewart house, but I knew we'd seen it before--- it was seen in post 17851...but the pictures have gone missing. I believe there was some discussion about the owner of this house being sort of a collector of dwellings....

I saw Sudden Fear also, What an interesting movie that really kept you on the edge of your seat! The way the scenes were set up and shot made me nervous. The little toy dog walking toward the closet where Joan Crawford was hiding, or the chain on the fence when Jack Palance was driving trying to find her. But most spectacular was at the end of the movie when she is walking up the street she tosses her scarf to the gutter, she is just gorgeous!

I thought I'd post Julius Shulman pictures of another William H Harrison design today. Looking back, I also posted Julius Shulman pictures of Mr Harrison's Sierra High School back in October. This is "Job 3790: William H. Harrison, Charles Samuels School District (Whittier, Calif.), 1964".

I found Charles T Samuels Elementary listed at 12214 Oxford Drive, La Mirada, although Google Maps seems to show it as Heights Christian Schools La Mirada Campus. The square building with the blue roof in the lower-left corner wasn't there in 1964, but the rest of the site looks fairly original.

Today's Julius Shulman post takes us back to Long Beach. It's "Job 3261: Hugh Gibbs, Texaco, inc. Field Office Building (Long Beach, Calif.), 1961".

It looks like the offices were very close to a refinery.

Although I didn't find a direct connection with Texaco, I think the building is now part of the Tesoro refinery at 2101 E Pacific Coast Highway, Wilmington. The entrance and a few other details have changed, but the overall size and shape are a good match.
