Wow! What an amazing find!

Unfortunately I can't help but get very angry when looking at this picture, just thinking about all that was torn down to make way for the sea of parking that now floods our downtown.

Sketch of Halifax from 1759.

http://gov.ns.ca/nsarm/virtual/Halif...hives.asp?ID=2

Description: This sketch, done from the Citadel in May 1759, was executed while Richard Short was in Halifax during the Seven Years' War, with the British fleet bound for the siege at Quebec. Short was an amateur artist and the purser on board HMS Prince of Wales. The sketch shows at the northern (left) extreme, the Great Pontack Inn at the corner of Duke and Water Streets, and extends as far south (right) as the Governor's Summer Farm, now the site of Government House on Barrington Street.

Barrington Street circa 1960:

Its too bad the butchered Hamilton the way they did. It looks like it was quite stately and built-up.

Here's a funky one, Montreal's new Train station complex, 1970's?

http://www.arch.mcgill.ca/prof/sijpk...004694-001.jpg

Most of what is in the lower half of the frame is gone now, lost to highways, big skyscrapers and elephantine surface parking lots. Canadian national's shoe-box factory / central train station is under the Sun Life.

Probably 1960.

I love looking at old skyline shots before most of the old buildings were torn down to make taller ones or parking lots.

lol it's missing a couple notable additions: 201 portage and the mb hydro tower, plus the u of w's recent upgrades, etc but you're not too far off in not noticing a substantial change..

Old skyline shot of Halifax from the north:

Recent picture from a very similar angle. Lots of demolition happened around the waterfront area in the northern half of the downtown area:
