I agree with all of this. There are plenty of other places where the ads during SXSW are obviously more temporary in terms of how they're placed, but I'm not really sure why the Fairmont hasn't tried to do something more permanent like this large banner, better signage or something on the bottom portions of the podium. Especially given the incredible amount of blank wall space on these first few floors.

Perhaps they think that a large advertisement "devalues" the fanciness of the Fairmont brand, but I'm not sure that would have that big of an impact -- especially at this location, where a good portion of their customer base is at the hotel for its proximity to the convention center, and likely aren't shopping around for competitors much (advertisement or no).

Not that I'm begging for the city to be filled with ads or anything, but I do correlate it to a "big city" feel to some degree, especially since even Dallas and Houston have a few large format things like this as well.

Couple pics I've never seen before......
I just saw this too.

The Spire seems to be placed close to the convention center rather than mid building. I think its stupid for a spire on this building, making a stubby fat building look dumb with a spire on top.

Pic 12 is a view as people go down Cesar Chavez into downtown, how bland of a blank parking garage wall with no name on it at minimum. Blaaaa

At least the pool will have a view. But I consider this quite the copy cat design of the JW Marriott.

This is a Fairmont, a world class hotel brand, they aren't going to build an ugly building. I'm thinking we're putting too much interpretation into basically a one-angle rendering.

It's going to be shorter, yes, but I'm not worried about how it will look.

You can see the width of the tower better in this one:

And how it looks, compared with the rest of the downtown area:

Here's some larger versions of those pics. Handy tip: with bizj links, delete the " *600 " from the end of the URL and the pics will be bigger and the links will work better.

Would have been really nice with I-35 cut & capped and with the original hotel design... maybe the cut & cap can still happen. :|
