I hope that BIG building is clad in stone, quartz, or a composite stone.

Exposed concrete looks cheap 90% of the time.

Mock up looks really good.. But there still looks to be a lot of space left to develop in particular the Entertainment District (the gap between Picasso and Studio condos looks huge) could use a few more proposals... I know that condos don't sell well there really, but still. If that area beefs up, its slowly shifting the core of the city west.

I wonder if Edmonton will see more highrises in the north end with the airport gone. IIRC it's mostly lowrises and wharehouses up there right?

Nope residential low rises on airport land Future highrises will run from 124 st west of downtown to 87 street jasper and as high north from about 99th - 104 ave

Well it kind of depends on what is meant by "north end". If we're talking about what is typically called "North edge" as the neighbourhoods immediately north of downtwown... I'd say quite possibly, at least in vicinity of 105/106 Ave. There is the strip of older industrial development north of MacEwan dating back from the rail line. I know there are some ideas floating around for a few decent sized buildings along there.

I meant that strip. I wasn't sure about neighbourhood names in Edmonton. I had been pretty sure they were wharehouses and whatnot, those seem to get redevelopped pretty often these days.

Also, I believe the land to the north of Ice District is purchased for development as well. But as mentioned, the current development at the old CC Airport will be mixed residential low-rise for the most part.

Indeed, expect a couple thousand units of residential in a mixed use village there over the next decade or two.

Yes that area up to 106 ave will be high rise condos but its a good 4 years off.

It's totally a 1950s design. Looks solid but if it's prefab and not limestone why bother?

Whippersnapper is only referring to "the business end of development" to justify why 8 of Toronto's last 8 office towers are and should be blue boxes. Debatable... but we're here to talk about architecture; that's why when yet another forumer brings up that cliche about Vancouver's "sea of blue/green glass" you'd never hear me bumbling about market forces and buyer preferences

But yeah, everything he said about sightlines, liveability, softening the public realm, etc, I'm a big fan. I laugh at those who fetishize Manhattan.

You're not here to talk about architecture. You're here to mock those that do not share your sensibilities. It's all over that post and every other post you have ever posted. You also completely miss the point of things likely out of indifference.

I'll make it as simple as possible. So what. They are 8 blue boxes. Some are mediocre and some are good. You want even better? It ain't coming from our large commercial developers or our largest corporations.

The last time Toronto tried a gimmick office tower we ended up with Brookfield Place.

Thanks, but no thanks, you can keep the wacky office towers out there if that's what you like.

It's probably one of my favorite PoMo office buildings in the country. I don't like it's twin so much though.
