I`d like to show you some pictures from my home town Hildesheim. It lies in Northern Germany and is one of the oldest towns in europe.
This is the St Michaels Church, built in the year 800, totaly destroyed in 1945 and built up in the 1960s. Belongs to the UNESCO world heritage.
closer view:
panorma view from the St Andreas Church:
on the left side the “Butchers guild Hall”from the 15th century. With its 11 floors the highest half-timbered house in the world. Destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt in the 1980s.
Town-Hall built in the medieval age
St.Marys Cathedral, belongs to the UNESCO world heritage
yard in the cathedral with a rose tree. A legend says the city will live just as long as the rose tree. the rose burned down in 1945 and began one year later to grow again
Great photos! It's sad to hear that many of the historic buildings were destroyed in the Second World War, but I'm glad to see that they were reconstructed -- they look beautiful!

theres a great story to Hildsheim. After the wartime destruction the communist authorities rebuilt in postwar concrete stylee. The residents were so appalled at the finished result they rallied together and forced their local council, at great expense, to knock it all down again and rebuild what was there before - that's people power for ya.
A leaf from that book would be great for loads of places on this side of the North Sea.
