Agreed, on all points. On the plus side, it's about 1000% better than what it's replacing.

Demolition permits are submitted for 1102-1106 SOUTH PARK STREET to make way for South Park Towers Reno.

What are they building in front of the existing towers? Retail?

From the renderings (scroll down to the bottom of the document linked in DJ's post), it looks like it. The section built on the lawn of the existing building shows signage and a patio, and the new townhouse-y sections to the right show signage on the ground floor as well as large windows that a shop might have.

I'm a little put off that Halifax continues to allow demolition of what looks to be Victorian era homes, but have conceded that this will continue as Halifax transitions to a larger, more dense city. History sometimes has to take a back seat to function and walkable, dense neighbourhoods. The future generations will still have a few examples of these old houses around, and if google maps continues to keep its older streetscape photos available, at least they can see what was once there if they are interested.
