The destruction of New York classical character continues, unfortunately!

Absolutely diabolical what's happening here:

Permits Filed For 213 East 83rd Street On The Upper East Side Of Manhattan
"Permits have been filed for a seven-story mixed-use building at 213 East 83rd Street on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
...
Demolition permits were filed earlier this month..."

That's fantastic news. An empty church replaced with housing. I hope it happens all over the city. The only issue is it isn't 3x as tall.

It's also fantastic news that more and more people are spending time with their families instead of engaging in ancient mythical practices.

In the few cases where the facade is incredible, keep the facade and build housing behind. This facade is pretty nice so I wouldn't mind keeping the facade but whatever. More housing is far more important, and there's no reason to add more regulations to the most overregulated and bureaucratized housing market on the planet.

We can do both imo. Increase housing in wiiiiide swathes of the city, while preserving nice classical facades, whether through preservation of whole buildings or mandating facadectemies in valuable cases. We could vastly expand our housing supply while keeping our nice, classical, urbane architecture intact. Not mutually exclusive.
