DL may have an outlook for the long-game here, but that'll take a tremendous amount of effort than just adding a few TX cities along with with BNA & MSY because you're getting double connections on a vast majority of routings possible with ABIA. I could see them building a small operation here but it'll take a lot of effort and capital to flex into the Texas market overall that they really pulled away from over 30 years ago after dropping DFW.

San Francisco is very aggressive. Delta only serves hub cities from SFO which AUS isnt... yet.

With all the tech industry here. An Asian route would be the best choice.

The coming few years will be interesting to watch. Delta is launching a SLC-ICN route next spring. Obviously, AUS is not a Delta hub (like SLC), but, it is interesting.

Maybe they're getting ready to get some gates when the new concourse opens up

I would be shocked if Delta has not been negotiating that very thing...

Once-daily service is more "testing the waters" than outright commit, IMO. Tampa is prime WN territory & going up against United & Alaska to SFO is going to be an uphill battle. I'd be shocked if UA didn't both upgauge aircraft & increase frequency and AS increase frequency as well.

IND & MEM are interesting adds, especially the latter.

I can see your argument. However, one could also argue that once daily service is a "commitment." If they were "testing the waters" as it was put, they could have done one, two or three departures a week too.

The term "commitment" with regard to airline routes is truly subjective. No matter the amount of weekly departures, an airline can up and remove the route completely at a moment's notice.

Some airlines are far more conservative in initiating new routes. They do more research into the viability of said route. One could argue that Delta could be considered one of these airlines. On the other end of the spectrum, American and Southwest can be haphazard in initiating new routes. Throwing routes against a wall to see what sticks. And, this pattern can be quite expensive to said airline.

I just saw the BNA secured two new TATL routes: Dublin and Reykjavik.

Aer Lingus will fly 4x weekly to Dublin using their A321XLR product (not sure if this is seasonal only). And, Icelandair will also fly (seasonally) 4x weekly to Reykjavik on their B738MAX product.

It's too bad that AUS is just barely outside the ranges of both of those aircraft - or AUS might have seen those routes too.

LATAM has A321NEOs...so, routes to from AUS to Bogota, Quito, Guayaquil and Lima are within its range?!?

Delta is at it again

Historically, American Airlines flew the original "nerd bird" route between San Jose and Austin. But American ended that service in 2009, after serving the route since 1992.

Delta debuts 'nerd bird' flight from San Francisco to Austin
By Mark Calvey – Senior Reporter, San Francisco Business Times
Oct 7, 2024
Updated Oct 7, 2024 5:48pm PDT

Delta Air Lines will debut a nonstop daily flight from San Francisco International Airport to Austin, Texas, where the Atlanta-based airline is boosting its presence.

“The route between Austin and San Francisco will unite two of the largest and most influential tech and innovation cities in the country,” Delta (NYSE: DAL) said. Delta will launch the route on June 8 using an Airbus A220-300 aircraft, offering first class and economy seating. In the main cabin, the seating configuration is three on one side and two on the other, so one side of the cabin doesn't have middle seats.

United Airlines (Nasdaq: UAL), the dominant carrier at SFO, also serves the SFO-Austin route. For example, on Friday, Oct. 18, United operates six nonstop flights between SFO and Austin.

ABIA was among the awardees of the most recently announced round of US DOT grant funding (10/24/24).

Quote:
$33.2 million to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas to fund a portion of the new Midfield Terminal B construction project, which will add at least 20 new gates to accommodate increased airline operations and competition. This grant will fund a portion of phase 2, which includes the construction of a 518-foot underground tunnel to connect the new terminal to the existing terminal.

Don't think I've seen this visual/rendering of the new concourse before

Looks like that render also includes the West Gate Expansion and the new Arrivals/Departures hall, just more subtly. Even though it's not much more than a simple massing I'm liking the look of the new concourse. Mostly because it looks cheap. At this point AUS should be maximizing gates per dollar.

Sure hope that Tunnel has a people mover or a tram to get you there.

I was going to mention that those were included in the rendering as well!

Pretty sure it will include those belts to make people walk faster. It should be similar but not as bad as SLC airport from A gates to B gates.

A tram would be so costly. Only we can wish...

Everything that I have heard and read indicate that infrastructure for a future APM will be implemented. However, no APMs will be installed until there is a need for Concourse C.

I would imagine the concourse will look more like the East and West expansions of the BJT - as it is being designed by the same architects.

SOM, however, is designing the new arrivals and departures hall. I'm hoping for the best on that one.

If I read the press release correctly, it seems like the new arrivals/departures hall will open slightly before the new concourse - which makes a ton of sense.

Also saw that last Monday was AUS' single busiest emplanement day in history - with 44,043 passing through TSA checkpoints.

Well they could start on the northern expansion tomorrow if the plans and permits were ready. They can’t start the concourse until the new taxiway opens. Have they announced when the OG short term garage is permanently closing for the demo?
