What to do with Radio Canada and the CBC?

I find The Pulse more pop than new wave/alternative. For 80's, "1st Wave" focuses on the most popular new wave song (with decent rotation), "Lithium" is for the 90's Alternative/New Wave and "Alt Nation" focus on current Alternative. "1st Wave Deep Cuts" on the App does a great job focusing on the less popular new wave songs of the 80's and depending on your specific tastes, the Sunday night show (can be listened on demand) "Dark Wave" gives a great selection of music from Ministry, Bauhaus and the like. It's 3 hour show that I'll relisten to over the week.

And tying it all together, unfortunately I find CBC R1 a bit lacking on Sirius. I find that I rarely listen to it for news, choosing BBC instead. Kinda wish they would rebroadcast various CBC radio programs on their Sirius channel ... but since they cut (repackaged) a number of the CBC broadcast channels I almost never listen to it at all.

I have Sirius for our new car and flip between:

BBC World News
NPR Now
1st wave
Deep Tracks
The Spectrum

and there is a jazz station and the name escapes me

That plus about 2300 songs on my Spotify playlist allow me to avoid the radio and its 'morning zoo' or 'Jesse, Dean and Gord' morning shows and limited playlist which is just designed to keep ears listening so they can have ads for things you didn't realise you need.

Deep Tracks is what Classic Rock should be. The Spectrum is Channel 28 and contains 'new rock' and 'old rock' and not too much of either.

NPR is what I wish CBC was. The BBC World News is excellent for news and long pieces and documentaries although after an hour or so you have most of the news.

There is a CBC station on Sirius but it is a sort of curated CBC with no local news etc.

Another alternative is the BBC Sounds app and stream it on your computer or in the car. Contains all of the BBC radio stations including 6 Music which is their alternative music station. Some footie is available when it isn't blocked in North America.

Having failed all that, you could listen to college//university stations which contain lots of programming that no commercial station would dare to air.

True, though I find the ones in Ottawa (CHUO - UOttawa and CKCU - Carleton U) are a bit too amateurish in their sound. Sorry if that sounds snobby.

Montreal and Toronto have decent-sounding student radio stations though.

I usually listen to Spa on Sirius XM. My go to station for news is the BBC World Service (although they go waaaay overboard on soccer coverage). I like having CBC on there to keep tabs on things if I am driving in the US. Otherwise, I occasionally listen to NPR and the jazz and classical stations.

Soon after I moved to Ottawa I listened to a show on a friday afternoon on one of the campus stations called 'Two pints of a lager and a packet of crisps' which played lots of songs really only popular in the UK (and lots of non charting songs from there) and I also liked the reggae shows on a Saturday afternoon. Totally understand the amateur reference.

That is impossible to have too much coverage of the beautiful game.

Sirius has lots of channels devoted to the NFL and college football which I have zero interest in.
