The Confed Bridge is fairly impressive due to it's sheer length even though none of the individual spans are terribly long. On a clear day you can actually see it from the top of the Cobequid Hills over 50km away.

The glimpse of the bridge is only very fleeting at highway speed. You can see it driving northbound, just as you crest the tallest part of the pass. It is only visible for a few seconds. You have to know where to look.

The light and time of day has to cooperate as well. I just might see it tomorrow
when I visit the Island.

One of my insane, off-the-wall fantasy infrastructure projects is a second bridge to PEI replacing the Caribou to Wood Islands ferry.

Of course there is no economic case for such a thing, though I will say it would improve infrastructure resilience, both by providing redundancy to the Confederation bridge and as an alternate land route to Nova Scotia if the Isthmus of Chignecto is ever impassible.

I’ve thought about it too. I wonder about its geotechnical feasibility from time to time too.
I’ll even go further. What if we build that bridge with divided 4 lanes right from the get-go, twin N.S.-106, TCH on the island bypassing the buildup area, and the Confederation Bridge? This will have the effect of turning New Glasgow (maybe even Antigonish) into a bedroom community for Charlottetown.

One can only dream…

That's like 50 miles though. Charlottetown isn't exactly Toronto or Vancouver where people need to live an hour drive away.

That's almost as far as Truro is to Halifax and Truro certainly isn't a bedroom community. And that's not even counting that the current bridge has a toll of around $40 so unless that was eliminated people wouldn't be crossing frequently.

You make the best freeway videos. Great tidbits of information, and excellent production.

The Northumberland Strait down by the Wood Islands/Caribou ferry crossing is a lot wider than the Abegweit Channel (where the Confederation Bridge is). I believe it is about 22 miles (nearly 40 km, vs 14 km for the Confederation Bridge). It is also a lot deeper down there. The cost would be prohibitive, even if the engineering was feasible.

If traffic volumes ever justified another crossing, it would make most sense just to twin the Confederation Bridge. Doing this would also simplify bridge maintenance, as if a major refit was necessary, all you would have to do is close down one bridge and divert all traffic to the twin until the job was done.

A few from Tuesday/Wednesday. The aerial is 70 outside Old Pelican, heading to Bay de Verde. The rest are all TCH between Corner Brook and Deer Lake.

Old Perlican:

Bay de Verde:

(An aside about Bay de Verde, it's almost depressing to visit as a Newfoundlander. It still has an active fishery and fish plant, so despite the town being completely unremarkable in terms of history, architecture, etc., it's one of the few genuinely active with residents. Lots of kids playing in the streets, lots of men and women walking to and from the boats or plant all day long working, it's still alive somehow in a way the vast majority of rural areas here are not.)

Oh yea, has work (to twin TCH) started around Whitbourne yet?

Also, is food on the North Atlantic Ferry good?

Not to my knowledge, but haven't driven by there in ages (flew St. John's to Deer Lake, then 45-min taxi to Corner Brook and reverse).

Haven't taken the ferry in probably 25 years either,

^ Nice pictures Ryan! What do you think of Corner Brook? I don't know much about this place TBH.

It's a bit hard for me to watch my older videos lol There was wayyyy to much information which, I think, it was difficult to read everything and look at the landscape at the same time...

I would certainly do it differently in 2024...

But thanks again : )

If you guys like tunnels, I recently uploaded a video of the Gotthard road tunnel in Switzerland. I really like how this production turned!

It's why some of us pause frequently and watch parts of them twice.
