It was designed by the legendary Albert Kahn and architecturally it was quite unique for NYC with an understated elegance reminiscent of 1920/30s continental Europe early modernism. Plus it had a compelling history. You can read more about it in the previous posts and on Daytonian in Manhattan.

I would have liked to see this preserved.

Didn’t RIU Hotels buy it? Most of their projects are horrendous. I’m concerned about getting a 500’+ eyesore.

Made even worse by the fact that they are still empty lots or being replaced with something banal.

This might be replaced with something soaring and iconic.
I wouldn't call it among the greatest losses the city has seen, but definitely something that would have been worth keeping around.

Riu’s NY buildings are usually short, fat, and ugly. Hopefully, the small footprint forces them to do something better.

I wonder if this is the smallest footprint on which a large tower will rise. It seems smaller than 520 Fifth and 111 W 57th.

I really hope that RIU doesn’t build one of their eyesores here. They just built a decent tower in Chicago.

1740 Broadway, which is mostly empty, was just purchased at a massive discount, and sits just to the north. Wonder if it's another candidate for a new hotel tower, or mixed-use development.

I think they said that it will be a residential conversion. Sadly, I don’t think that it will change at all on the outside.

That sucks. I would love to see that postwar eyesore demolished and replaced.

Riu Hotels, to me, aren't horrible-looking. The two in Times Square and the Chicago one look ok to me. We won't get a masterpiece, but I doubt it will be bad either.

This is such a small site. What sites with buildings of almost 700’ or more were this small?

I’m thinking Steinway and maybe 530 Park. I think that even 432 Park’s footprint is bigger.
