Anyone know what’s going on with the old Telegram building on Columbus Drive (across from the Village Mall)? Seems to be lots of activity happening there lately this past month.

Pipers has it bought, they will use some of the space for a warehouse and rent out remaning space to tenants
I didn't realize, or had forgotten, that the Telegram wasn't operating out of that building. Seems like an ideal place for an apartment building - bus routes, grocery store, mall
This development consists of two very small apartment buildings located on the corner of Mount Carson Avenue and Dunrobin Street in Mount Pearl. On April 25, deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, along with representatives form every level of government showed up for the media complete with shiny new shovels, and a mound of dirt carefully placed for photo opps to tell everyone how affordable homes will be built.
The fine print...... It took 3 years of deferrals and red tape to get it started. It will take 18 months to complete the two building containing just 12 units each. And last but not least, each 2-bedroom, 2 bathroom unit will rent for $1,800.00 per month.

'It JuSt IsN't A gOoD fIt FoR tHe NeIgHbOuRhOoD'....
I can't honestly believe that's their argument. The 'neighbourhood' is part industrial area.... They'd rather look at a vacant lot and a warehouse.
I looked at the pics of the proposed building when available earlier in this thread. Not fresh in my mind right now, but pretty sure it'd be an improvement for the area, especially considering there was a gas station there before.
I like the proposal....it's just not a good fit for our neighborhood.
I've read these words so many times it's not funny. As one councilor said, people who are in support of a proposal should be vocal and/or show up for hearings. In most cases, a minority opposition will be most vocal.
Unless all new apartment building proposals out out in the woods, then people will be against them, lol
Someone recently said that the former Telegram Building on Columbus Drive was gonna be occupied by Pipers as a warehouse. But Seems like they are renovating it for something else with lots of bright garish colours. Anyone got any more info as to what else may be going in there? Reminds me of a daycare centre now.
Here is a site spec and some pics of that was proposed for the corner of Blackmarsh Road and Albany Street. Hopefully the crazy NIMBYs won't sway council away from this development.
Also noticed that the former Big Erics warehouse is for lease or sale. Be another good location for some high density apartments.
Pipers bought the building. Part of it is being used as a warehouse while the rest will be rented out to other businesses.

A change has been submitted to the residential development at the old IJ Sampson school site which was originally for townhomes to be build behind the current homes that are there now. Developer now wants to rezone to allow higher density apartment buildings with around 48 apartment units in four separate buildings. Here is a spec plan showing layout. Don't really look like enough parking for 48 apt units. Proposal is on Page 74 of the latest August agenda. https://pub-stjohns.escribemeetings....cumentId=38906
