From the meeting minutes from the May 21st Anglophone East District Education Council Meeting
"Regarding the Shediac K-12 project, The Superintendent/CEO announces that
the design has received approval from the Minister, and an architect has been
appointed to oversee the project. Tomorrow, a meeting is scheduled to discuss
potential design templates that could be proposed for implementation.

While we have not secured land for either project yet, the department is actively
collaborating with landowners to finalize the necessary arrangements for both
builds."

Another interesting point was that it was asked if they could include parking for e-bikes and scooters that don't fit into regular bike racks at both the Dieppe and Shediac schools.

I imagine landowners are being greedy, and the negotiations are all about price.

E-bike parking sounds like a good idea.

This new build on Main Street is virtually complete, but the site is now moribund.

Apparently, the rumour is that this is because that disgraced structural engineer from Moncton was involved in this project. Apparently, an inspection has been performed, and substantial bracing is needed to make the site safe. The necessary steel has been ordered, but, until it is installed, this site is in limbo,

Too bad - St. Louis Bar & Grill, Halo Donuts, Lost & Found Ice Cream, Vibe Juicery and a couple of other businesses are also in limbo, and are losing a complete summer season.

Shediac Mayor Roger Caissie posted on Facebook last week that the plan for next year is to extend Breaux Bridge St. to Ohio road.
This makes a lot of sense especially with the amount of houses being built between Breaux Bridge and Highway 15. This will allow residents to move from one side of the town to the other without using Main st. and hopefully alleviate some of the congestion the town currently experiences. The only thing that could make this better is if you could get off of highway 15 east at Riverside dr.

Excellent news.

This is absolutely necessary, especially given how fast the town is growing.

Still no news on the location of the new anglophone K-12 school? This is getting ridiculous.

I have a feeling there is some political posturing going on here with the legal actions between the Education minister and the District Education Council. I have a source on the council who indicated that they had a site selected months ago but were waiting for the minister to make the announcement and couldn't divulge the location until then. I may be wrong but we might not hear anything until the election campaigning starts. Given that it is supposed to be opened September of 2027 they need to get moving on construction sooner rather than later.

On Shediac Cape, the are removing the remaining playground to install portables. The kids are now playing in the bus drop off area during lunch and recess.

[quote]A fourth lawsuit has been filed over alleged design flaws in a building by a suspended Moncton structural engineer.

New Brunswick-based LRL Property Investments Inc. filed a lawsuit Thursday in Moncton court against Hélène Thériault and her firm, Match Engineering.]/quote]

Quote:
The filing outlines a list of repairs, including:

Digging up a sidewalk to expose the buildings footings, a component of its foundation.
Removing portions of the concrete parking garage slab to install footings.
Cutting and removing walls and ceilings on multiple floors to install steel.
Removing "surfaces" in residential units to add steel plates.
Installing new patio columns on 12 apartment and two commercial unit balconies.

Holy crap - the extent of repairs necessary is incredible!

I’m hearing rumours that the building on Main Street is beyond repair and at this point demolition is the most viable option . I hope these rumours are wrong 😑

Wow! Even if demolition is a rumor, I can't see anyone feeling safe moving into that building if it was fixed.

I'm not sure that demolition is going to happen, there are still people working on that building, I've seen crews working on it as late as last week, mostly people painting and finishing as I'm assuming they are waiting for materials to fix the issues. I'll take a run by there later today and see if there is anything going on

Ive seen workers around the building this week. I’ve also noticed some diagonal steel beams across some of the residential unit windows. I’m guessing this is a retrofit.

Yeah, I went by there today, there is definitely work going on in the building. There has been some demolition inside the building, presumably to make repairs. There is also an HVAC crew onsite. I'd be surprised if they were thinking of demolishing the whole building, I think it probably more removing some of the finish work to fix the structural issues.

Hopefully it can be saved with some structural improvements. It is a very nice looking building and a significant asset to downtown Shediac and the community at large.

Given this list of repairs, it will almost be a demolition anyway.

By passing on main st this afternoon I also notice activity on old green house on main st restaurant location that was demolished last year. Possibility of construction is starting soon for the 55 units apartment some equipment was onsite leveling the land.

If they're continuing to work on the building, it seems like they're trying to save it. Hopefully they can. It would be a disaster if it was beyond salvageable. The reputation of the building has probably already taken a major hit in the eyes of potential renters.

Well, one thing that prospective tenants can take solace in is that this will be one of the most scrutinized buildings in the entire province. Multiple engineers would have been involved in vetting the building and supervising the repairs. I don't imagine there will be any chance in building collapse after all this.

They were fortunate. They came within a couple of inches of demolition.

I'm paraphrasing but the concrete cured to better than expected so it's stronger than it needed to be.

Underengineered but luckily overengineered somehow.

Still need all the extra stuff done to it though.

Plus in order to get insurance on the building, it would have to be thoroughly inspected to be absolutely sure there were no issues. Maybe it'll all work out in the end - although at a considerable cost.

What are the odds that the developer will be able to recoup these costs?

Probably not good for future resale value. I can’t imagine any institutional buyer ever wanting to touch any of these assets impacted by structural engineering defects, even after being repaired.
