If what (some) ROCers say is true, how can this Quebec reporter possibly communicate with random Parisians on the street without using English as a lingua franca?

Pale? it looked like shiny metallic grey to me.

I was curious to see how much code switching from even Radio Canada standard French he did but they edited out the questions interestinlgly.

And the crucial importance of the spot of an adjective in French syntax in some cases.

Un homme petit may be un grand homme.
Un homme grand may be un petit homme.

English-speakers will struggle to get this. This is the kind of subtleties that make the language funny.

Edit: wait, I must explain to them, though.

A small/short man may be a great man.
A tall man may be a poor/mediocre man.

Probably not much if at all. Radio-Canada standard French (which is a thing) is perfectly understandable to anyone in France.

No. They are Parisian left-wingers. France cannot be reduced to just Parisian left-wingers, who make up only a very small segment of the population.

It was one of those bizarre moves by Macron, one of many, entrusting the ceremony to well known left-wingers from the Parisian bubble, as if anything good could be expected from that. But then Macron has proven again and again that he is a left-winger for social and identity issues.

According to the organizers, it was supposed to symbolize the Celtic goddess of the Seine River, Sequana, but some historians have pointed out that they mixed up two different Gallic goddesses. The one riding a horse is another goddess. Sequana was depicted by the Gauls as a female figure standing on a boat (which makes much more sense).

So in the mind of the organizers, it was Sequana, Celtic goddess of the Seine River, who was carrying the torch.

People are such losers… the show was awesome. Best opening ceremonies. Loved the boats the tableaux’s and Celine was epic. There were a few lame moments. The threesome was dumb and should have been two straight lovers. I’m gay so I can say that. The cut off of the blue bearded guy on cbc sucked. But the fashion show was fun and lively, and had like nothing to do with the last supper… why was a connection even made between the two… I don’t know. But honestly…great show.

Too bad all these religious losers can’t get mad about real shit lik… I dunno… child poverty.

Harris Interactive carried out a survey on July 27, Saturday, 2 days ago.
According to it, at least 85% of the French population thought the ceremony was a success.

Unless you think Harris Interactive is some sort of secret Jewish organization to ruin Christianity, which is highly unlikely, you must admit that the ceremony was not just Parisian, but representative of France as a whole indeed.
Besides, most so-called artists, such as dancers would've been hired from entire France, not just from the Paris area.

I'm kind of sick of the French far-right complaining about the Paris metropolis whenever anything pisses them off.
Who's the ugly, nasty Jacobins? Certainly not kind innocent liberals like myself...
They are the Jacobins, along with the far left.

Bon sinon.

And I'm watching the final in women's saber now, where the two finalists are... French women, so that will be one more gold and and more silver medal for France tonight.

Perhaps time to move on or to open a different thread for the Olympics.

We have 5 gold, 8 silver and 3 bronze medals as we speak.

I know, this is only the beginning and the 2 weeks are going to be long.
But the French crowd is unleashed. Tribes are showing up from all over the country.
This is to give wings to our athletes.

Did you see how they celebrated alien Léon at la Défense's arena last night? He's going to loot the cupboard full of gold. He'll take no prisoner. He's going to waste them all.
I bet he was frustrated not to beat his own world record yesterday, so he'll do even better on the next races.

I also seem to recall that some people / some sources used to only count gold medals as the only ones that matter, the logic probably being that silver is the first loser. In that case Japan is first and South Korea and China second and third.

Nope, because after tonight's final in women's saber (where the two finalists were French women), France is now #2 either in gold medal count or in total medal count.

But Kwoldtimer is right, perhaps this should be moved to a dedicated thread.

By the way, what percentage of Canadian medals in Summer Olympics are due to Québec athletes in general you would say?

Why does it matter? A Canadian is a Canadien is a Canadian

What percentage of the French medals are from athletes from Franco-Africa?

^^"Franco-Africa" doesn't exist, whereas Québec does exist, and a significant percentage of their population even want to achieve independence.
