If what (some) ROCers say is true, how can this Quebec reporter possibly communicate with random Parisians on the street without using English as a lingua franca?

Probably not much if at all. Radio-Canada standard French (which is a thing) is perfectly understandable to anyone in France.

According to the organizers, it was supposed to symbolize the Celtic goddess of the Seine River, Sequana, but some historians have pointed out that they mixed up two different Gallic goddesses. The one riding a horse is another goddess. Sequana was depicted by the Gauls as a female figure standing on a boat (which makes much more sense).

So in the mind of the organizers, it was Sequana, Celtic goddess of the Seine River, who was carrying the torch.

People are such losers… the show was awesome. Best opening ceremonies. Loved the boats the tableaux’s and Celine was epic. There were a few lame moments. The threesome was dumb and should have been two straight lovers. I’m gay so I can say that. The cut off of the blue bearded guy on cbc sucked. But the fashion show was fun and lively, and had like nothing to do with the last supper… why was a connection even made between the two… I don’t know. But honestly…great show.

According to it, at least 85% of the French population thought the ceremony was a success.

Unless you think Harris Interactive is some sort of secret Jewish organization to ruin Christianity, which is highly unlikely, you must admit that the ceremony was not just Parisian, but representative of France as a whole indeed.
Besides, most so-called artists, such as dancers would've been hired from entire France, not just from the Paris area.

I also seem to recall that some people / some sources used to only count gold medals as the only ones that matter, the logic probably being that silver is the first loser. In that case Japan is first and South Korea and China second and third.
