Lots of criticism starting to build on the feds about their park jurisdiction and yet it's basically all provincial resources.
Could they have mobilized the army 3-4 days ago to create fire breaks or add resources?

Yes, first responders evacuated hours ago. What an incredible tragedy. One of the great destinations in Canada and a place that I have core memories of stretching back decades, to the first summers that I can recollect.
Damn. Just caught up on some of the news about Jasper. Really feeling for the residents there, and everybody else who loves the place. I’ve never made it there but hope to someday, after they have recovered (which will take years).

Really really sad news.
As someone who grew up in an area that was devastated by fires (South Kelowna in 2003), the landscape of Jasper will never be the same in our lifetimes. The mountains behind my house, which were wall-to-wall trees pre-fire, are practically bare 21 years later.
Part of the issue is that if you have ever skied at Marmot Basin in the least 5 years, you will know that ~30-50% (at least how it looks from above) of the valley trees were brown due to pine beetle devastation. I'm guessing that didn't exactly help.

Jasper means so much to me and my family. Countless camping, hiking and kayaking trips, I got married at the JPL, it was my daughter's first trip after she was born. I was heading there for a week at the end of August. Just devastating.

Sadly, it will never be the same, but in the long run, this will become part of its history and will remain beautiful in a changed way. I will still intend to visit someday, when the time is right.
Brutal smoke in Calgary now, air quality was listed as 11+ last night.
Jasper sounds like it's mostly gone now, the fires are just getting worse every year. Summer isn't fun anymore, I'm not ready for cold but winter needs to come and put out all these fires!

Listening to a warden that set up the forest management for Jasper. Jasper NP was one of the best for reducing fuel in and around the park. Cutting trees and back burning. But you get the perfect storm of dry pine beetle trees, hot dry wind. His quote" you can prepare all you want for a hurricane but when it hits mother nature will kick your ass".
Seeing new images coming out of jasper. Looks like not much is left. Haven't seen that much gone since McMurray.Also sounds like the fire moved quite fast. Going into Slave Lake and McMurray after those fires was always tough. This will be tougher. I was in McMUrray doing damage assessment while the fires were still burning. That was tough. This would be tougher. I don't know if my emotions could handle it now. St Albert and Edmonton had crews going in Yesturday as soon as the call came. So they were preped.
