Pre the 2021 heat wave, Castlegar had never hit 40 before, right?
Now I think they have hit it once or twice every year since then.
Or was it that they have never hit 40 before just in June?
Also today is a good day in the North Okanagan to test out the humid heat vs. dry heat debate!
In Vernon it’s now 40 with a humidex of just 42.
Yet, a 30 minute drive north in Salmon Arm it’s only 34 but with a humidex of 44.
Correct no official 40C day until we had several in a row including 43.9C June 30 21. And now yes one or two every year since. Surprisingly our first 40C day was in June and not August or July.

Plus got my first ever 40C living room day today.

Closed all the windows and blinds in the morning to try and keep the cool air from heating up. Came home after dinner and there it was.
Guess in the long run it’s just best to keep all the windows wide open all day long which lets the breeze in when there is one.

The warmspot was Lytton, BC at 42.2C. What a long duration heat wave this is turning out to be in the West. Metro was complaining it was gonna be all Eastern Canada heat this year when we had ours in June. But July has definately been Western Canada's month. Just hope they don't ruin it all for the rest of us (smoke).

Warmest low was The Pas, MB at 21.0C.
There were some complaining, but that actually wasn't me. I was actually more informing those complaining that this June was only about a degree below seasonal and the reason why it felt so much more below seasonal was because the prior three Junes were so hot.
Sadly the smoke has started, most of it at this time is coming from the north eastern corner of BC, northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories. But big fires are now starting to burn in southern BC, Washington, Oregon and other states.
Anyways, many 40+ degree readings today to rundown.
Lytton was on top with 42.2
Kamloops hit an impressive 41.6
Trail (Warfield) was 41.4
Osoyoos was 40.5
Clearwater was 40.4
Castlegar was 40.2
Vernon was 40.1
Kelowna was an impressive 40.0. There second time this year.
Here on the other side of the Pacific we are having the hottest weather of the year so far, 35 in my area and humid ( of course ) How I hate being sticky.
That said, I do love the skies and daily anvil heads that form around here on summer days.
The beach close to us had cloudy water, which is not usual. I thought Tuesday's deluge of rain had something to do with it. Next day drove 10 minutes north to Thunder Beach and the water was pristine. And no rocks whatsoever.
On Friday I checked out the free hand launch on the local river. Haven't fished it this year. Looks like it might be a while. 30 boats did break loose from their docks at the marina so this was not unexpected.
Splitting rotted logs this weeeknd, which the neighbour had kept for years. You know when it's moist you're going to find creatures. Yet another salamander.
Tried making a sand castle with a utility bucket last year, to no avail. It collapsed. Pretty proud of myself for pulling it off this time. Gotta have the right mix of compacted sand.
Came home to these raccoons. Tore up my grass and now moved into my backyard I see.
I also stepped on a chipmunk. I just bbq'd some burgers and was walking back and I saw a flash run towards my feet. Then I felt something right as I was stepping down. I tried to stop myself from planting my foot and I was able to step down with less force, but I felt the contact. Turned around and the chipmunk was twitching for three seconds and then died. WTF? I was just walking and he comes from the side of me and runs right into the path of my foot. And three weeks earlier I had my first road kill. A red squirrel on Upper Middle Road.
And my MIL can't resist free shit at the curb. Already have a toy cash register for the kids, but she brought this back. Well good decision. They left actual money in there.
Sun and cloud and 22 at 12:30PM. No real need to mention humidity as the air really dried out this morning as a cold front passed through, dew points at a very low 13 degrees right now.
Smoky and Hot here. 35C and Smoke both Sat and Sun. AQ was about 10 both days. Cleared up around 7pm last night but still humid.
Supposed to be better air quality this week but still in the 30s.
Some cooling with Possible showers on Wed or Thursday. Still have not had the wild thunder storms of past years. Next weekend looks to be high 20s.
Getting out at 7am to get a ride in. Noticed how lush everything is right now. Alos my grapes are doing great. Have not had this many ever.
Just got back from a week in BC. Temps in Kelowna were high 30s to low 40s, just brutal! Good thing there is a lake to cool off in. Vancouver was the mid to high 20s, much better! Got back to Calgary at 33, looks like 33-34 the next few days before a drop into the 20s. Summer in Western Canada has definitely changed!
This couldn't be a more normal summer. The temps in the interior are nothing out of the ordinary. I swear everyone gets amnesia in Canada every summer and acts like high 30's is something that never happens.

Some people are only learning now that the BC Interior is hot and sunny every year. Meanwhile it’s been normal for a thousand years.

I mean, a few posts above there was a conversation about 40 degree temperatures never being recorded in Castlegar before a few years ago and now we're acting like people are silly for noting this current heat wave as remarkable?
Parts of the country can have a hot and dry summers yet the increasing degree and frequency of the heat can still be recognized as a shift. It looks like most stations in BC/AB have average highs in July so far around 5 degrees above normal - so while the individual daily highs may not be unheard of for the most part - I'm not sure this is the most "normal".
In Edmonton at least, days above 30 are not that notable, but having 7-8 of them in row is something that has only happened in relatively recent history. Days 34 C and above are pretty unusual here yet we're looking at 4-5 of them this year so far, and 4 of the hottest 8 days ever recorded here were within the last 5 years.
Speaking of rare weather occurences - at 11 AM MDT Edmonton is momentarily the hot spot in Canada.
I don’t mean Castlegar I mean Lytton Kamloops and Osoyoos etc.
And it’s not like we’ve had cold summers until recently with three 39.8Cs recorded in the past.
