If smaller towns are included, then there are also the Tri-Towns in Northern Ontario (Cobalt-Haileybury-New Liskeard). They were partially amalgamated in 2004 to form the new City of Temiskaming Shores (Cobalt rejected the merger).

Vernon BC shares its city boundary with Coldstream. Not a twin city at all but it's a small city with an incorporated suburb. Even in "Vernon" you would say you're from Vernon if you live in Coldstream.

Hamilton's growth has actually kept a decent pace with Toronto for that past century from what I can tell. It might end up being more like St. Paul - Minneapolis at some point, but those are still considered distinctive twin cities.

Ideally be similarily sized too, but it's not always necessary. Gatineau is smaller than Ottawa, but with their downtowns so close to each other just across the river and with all the people commuting from one city to the other, I think they deserve the title of twin cities.

Ottawa and Gatineau are like the Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito of twin cities.

I was thinking of this topic while I did a long road trip last weekend. But my thougths expand beyond twin cities to sister cities, cousins and rivals. Lots of great examples here.

I think of Port Hope and Cobourg as sister towns like Elora and Fergus or Stratford and St. Mary's or Acton and Georgetown. Midland and Penetang might be twin towns. Same with Richmond Hill and Markham.

East Gwillimbury and West Gwillimbury are just towns that are a hodge podge of villages with no real downtown and no identity. West got amalgamated into Bradford West Gwillimbury and lies in Simcoe County while East remains its own municipality and is a part of York Region, which is part of the GTA.

For places like Brampton and Mississauga, while they share a border and are the two largest suburbs of them all, and are a part of Peel Region, I feel like they are more rivals than anything.

There's some obvious rival cities across the country, and there's a thread about that so I won't go too much into that.
