Big hole in the middle of a Jackson street has become a frustrating obstacle

Video Link

Quote:
JACKSON, Miss. —
People in a West Jackson neighborhood said they’ve been complaining for years about a big hole in the middle of a street. They said their calls to the city haven’t helped.

Rashad Caston said he has fond memories growing up in a thriving Jackson neighborhood off Capitol Street.

“We played basketball right there. We threw a football on the street. We rode bicycles on the street,” said Caston, who moved out years ago.

He wants to invest his time and money to revive the community, but there is a giant obstacle in his way.

“You can’t even get a car down the street because it has a hole in the middle of the street,” Caston said.

There is a 6-foot-deep crater on Denver Street near Caston’s childhood home. Caston said his calls to the city have fallen on deaf ears.

“As high as the taxes are in Mississippi, and we’ve got a city street that’s got a sinkhole that’s this big,” he said.

This week, Caston streamed live on Facebook to draw attention to the danger.

“If you drive in here, you’re probably going to get stuck in the hole,” Caston said. “You could possibly die. This is a health hazard. It’s a danger to everyone.”

Caston said he’s looking out for elderly residents who spent their lives here.

“They bought their house to stay in it for a lifetime — what’s wrong with cleaning the neighborhood?” Caston said.

Caston said he owns two car dealerships and is willing to put his money where his mouth is.

“Give me the manpower, we’ll spend our money. Or whoever you’re paying, give me their salary. I’ll donate it to getting this fixed, to getting these streets cleaned. Because I want them clean. I don’t care about nothing else but getting these neighborhoods cleaned up,” Caston said. “It all starts with one. Once you have the time, one person starting, and it’ll get done.”

The Mayor’s Office is looking into the issue.

HICKMAN HEIGHTS APARTMENTS OFF TERRY ROAD IN JACKON RIBBON CUTTING EVENT

Quote:
Hickman Heights will sit on the former site of the La Quinta Inn off Terry Road.
About $17.4 million will go toward the project.
The rest of the investment will go toward distressed properties in other locations.
A $57.6 million development and home renovation project involving six counties will bring affordable housing for low-income and elderly residents and provide renovations to hundreds of homes, officials say.

The local branch of the Mississippi Regional Housing Authority made the announcement Thursday at a groundbreaking where officials described plans to build a 100-unit affordable living complex called Hickman Heights in south Jackson.

A model moving forward?
The public-private investment is particularly important in south Jackson, officials noted, which has suffered from disinvestment and urban flight for years.

"We have a housing epidemic. However, now we have a example of a model that can be used moving forward," said Jackson Councilman Aaron Banks, whose Ward 6 borders the development site.

The complex is named for Dr. Hickman Johnson, the executive director of MRHA Region 6. Johnson has over 40 years of public housing experience and was named as the principal visionary for the project at Thursday's ceremony.

The complex will sit on the former site of the La Quinta Inn on Angle Drive off Terry Road and in the shadow of Interstate 20 and Interstate 55. It is expected to be completed by July 1, 2021. Construction began in December.

The four-floor complex will have 100 rent-subsidized units. Much of the 80 one-bedroom and 20 two-bedroom units will be geared toward senior citizens, according to MRHA. The housing authority will be accepting applications on its website for potential residents.

The development will also offer residents education programs, community events and activities, personal development and counseling programs.

"It's a revival, right at the gate to south Jackson," said Johnson.

Another 136 homes owned by the MRHA across the central Mississippi region will be renovated as part of the project, with plans for an additional 20 living units to be built, officials said.

The share for Hickman Heights is about $17.4 million. The rest of the investment will go toward distressed properties in Canton, Edwards, Hermanville, Jackson, Pearl, Port Gibson, Tchula and Yazoo City.

The overall housing project is expected to create 633 construction jobs and 37 long-term jobs. The Hickman project by itself is expected to provide 291 construction jobs and 15 post-construction jobs, officials said.

Hickman and others at the ceremony said securing a commitment from all investors on the project was complicated and also unique since it spans so many cities and counties.

"It's been a long time coming," Hickman said. "We wanted to take this property and build a model development. It's unique. I think everyone would agree it was a complicated process."

Katina Pace, the deputy director for the regional MRHA, said Thursday's announcement is the culmination of discussions that first started in 2012. That year, the MRHA acquired the hotel property from the state. Five years later, HUD accepted the authority's application for the project, Pace said.

The real estate development company, BGC Advantage, is the master developer for the project, with Redstone Investments, Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust, the Mississippi Home Corporation, Sterling Bank, River City Builders, DNA Workshop, Ross & Yerger and Standard Enterprises, Inc. also partnering on the project.

4 months after the relaunch, JTRAN wins big with grant. See how much and what the plans are

Quote:
More upgrades will soon be coming to Jackson's bus system after the city was awarded millions by the Federal Transit Authority.

On Monday, Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba and Christine Welch, the city's deputy director of transportation, announced JTRAN was awarded a $13.7 million grant from the FTA. Welch said the grant is part of an undertaking by the Biden-Harris administration to reduce carbon emissions by 2050.

Freda Germany poses for a photo while taking a JTRAN bus in Jackson, Miss., on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. Germany says she has been riding this bus since 2000. "What's great about the bus is that they come - they might not be on time, but [it is guaranteed] transportation back home," Germany said.

Brandton Jones poses for a photo while taking a JTRAN bus in Jackson, Miss., on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

Tevra Sanders poses for a photo while taking a JTRAN bus in Jackson, Miss., on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

"It's one of the largest awards the City of Jackson has ever been awarded for the advancement of the fleet and the system in the City of Jackson, so we're very proud of that," Welch said.

In March, the city's bus system was fully relaunched. In addition to new buses, JTRAN was redesigned to have a brand new website, better bus shelters, onboard announcements for upcoming stops and a JTRAN app to download on your phone, providing riders with real-time schedule information. New bus routes, 12 in all, and new schedules were also relaunched.

Welch said the grant will help Jackson replace and modernize its existing fleet of hybrid buses.

Currently, JTRAN has four hybrid buses, and plans to add 35-and-40-foot hybrid and diesel electric buses, propane powered buses and electric vans with charging stations. All of the new vehicles will have an air purification system and touchless fare system, Welch said, and will reduce run times and increase reliability for Jackson citizens.

Lumumba and Welch expressed their gratitude to Mississippi's U.S. Congressman Bennie Thompson, who was instrumental in securing the funds for JTRAN.

"We are very excited to take that next step to advance in the transit system for the City of Jackson and reducing our run times and our reliability for the citizens here in Jackson," Welch said.

But the relaunch of JTRAN has also met its fair share of obstacles. On May 4, JTRAN workers staged a "sick-out" and the city's bus system stopped operating, leaving riders and residents — some disabled — stranded at bus stops for over three hours.

A Clarion Ledger investigation also spoke with numerous JTRAN riders who said the buses are still marred with issues, including long wait times, difficulties paying for a bus pass since it's cash only and late buses that sometimes skip riders as they wait at the bus stop.

At the press conference, Lumumba continued to praise JTRAN, adding that the system has come a long way since he first took office.

"Sometimes we have short memories and I want to give credit to our mass transit, our public transit system," Lumumba said. "When this administration arrived we had end-of-life buses from Sarasota, Florida, that were breaking down all the time. We're going to continue to be smart about how we use mass transit in our city because the closest statistical … barrier to generational poverty is commute time."

First phase of Bozeman Road Widening Project should start late this summer, engineer says

Quote:
MADISON COUNTY, Miss. (WLBT) - The first phase of the Bozeman Road Widening Project could get underway late this summer, following a vote by the Madison County Board of Supervisors.

On Monday, the board voted to approve accepting a $38.6 million bid from Hemphill Construction to widen Bozeman from Mississippi 463 to Reunion Parkway.

The work also will include installing a walking train from 463 to Gluckstadt Road and making improvements at the Gluckstadt Road intersection.

The bid came in about $800,000 more than the previous bid rejected by the board. Hemphill was the lone company to submit an estimate.
District 1 Supervisor Casey Brannon urged board members to support the measure, saying not approving it could put the county in danger of losing millions in federal funds to help cover the project’s cost.

“If we do not accept this today, we lose $4.4 million in federal money, which brings it to us paying $38 million instead of $33 and a half,” he said.

In April, the Central Mississippi Planning and Development District (CMPDD) notified the county that if it didn’t bid out the first phase of the project by July 27, it would risk losing $4.4 million in Federal Surface Transportation Block Grant Funding set aside for the work.

That same letter showed the board had already exhausted all options to further extend the deadline for bidding the work.

The letter came weeks after the board voted to rebid the first phase of the project at a meeting in March. At that same meeting, the board voted to bid out the project in sections in an effort to cut costs.

All three bids are shown below:

Bozeman Road (federal project) - $38,626,968
Bozeman Road (463 to Reunion Parkway) - $31,602,789.51
Bozeman Road/Gluckstadt Intersection Improvements - $5,743,460
County Engineer Bryan said the latter two bids came in about $1.3 million less than the combined bid for the total project. However, the county would not be eligible to use federal funding it if moved forward with the projects separately.

Bryan said the county now must obtain concurrence from the Mississippi Department of Transportation. Because federal funds are being used, MDOT must sign off on the contract before work can begin. He said construction could get underway in about two months.

More information on new water tank coming to Ridgeland
Video Link

Quote:
RIDGELAND, Miss. (WJTV) – The City of Ridgeland broke ground on a $9.6 million water tank on Wednesday, July 17. The water tank will be located near Highland Colony Parkway.

Plans for the tank began in 2020, but they were delayed multiple times due to the pandemic.

The water tank will hold 100 million gallons of water, which will provide a 30% capacity increase.

Ridgeland Mayor Gene McGee said the project will allow the city to continue to grow.

“When you have something like the Amazon Web Services coming to Ridgeland and Topgolf and other developments, you’re needing to provide additional sources for water and resources. and so, this is just another step to provide the resources that are necessary,” said McGee.

Officials expect the project will be completed by the start of 2026.

Catfish and the cross: Berry's Seafood and Catfish House offers quite a buffet

Quote:
If you’ve passed the gigantic redwood barn-like structure known as Berry's Seafood and Catfish House on U.S. 49 in Florence featuring an even larger white cross in the foreground and wondered what it’d be like to actually eat there, here’s a tip. It’s worth a detour from any direction you happen to be traveling. Berry’s operates a smaller restaurant just down Highway 49 in Magee, but since the Florence location gets the most queries, I’ll focus on this one.

In terms of my favorite time to visit, I have to select the dinner seafood buffet offered Thursday through Saturday evenings. When the doors open at 4:30 p.m., there’s usually a line or at least several cars full of hungry diners waiting to go in. Once you enter the cavernous building filled with vintage artifacts and lighted trees, you’ll want to head straight to the seafood buffet. It’s a veritable smorgasbord of almost every type and variety of seafood you can imagine.

And that’s not even taking into consideration the delicious sides, salad and dessert bars included with the all-you-can-eat seafood.

The buffet is piled high with fried oysters, stuffed crab, fried and blackened catfish, boiled, stuffed and fried shrimp, frog legs and seafood gumbo. Also included are sirloin steaks, chicken tenders, fried quail, crawfish etouffee and seafood gumbo.

A few of the accompanying sides are fried green tomatoes, fried dill pickles, turnip greens, corn on the cob, hush puppies, cornbread and rice and gravy.

If you’re hungry earlier in the week, there’s a country dinner buffet Monday through Wednesday evenings for $14.95 offering rotating favorites like fried chicken and other meats, casseroles, country-style vegetables, full salad and dessert bars and cornbread.

If you stop by at mid-day, the daily country lunch buffet is available for $14.95. The buffet offers all-you-can-eat catfish, fried and boiled shrimp and other buffet staples like fried chicken, country-style vegetables, casseroles and the full salad and dessert bars.

Speaking of dessert, you need to plan accordingly during your meal so you'll be able to enjoy a followup serving of fruit cobbler, banana pudding, homemade cakes and other delicacies that rotate daily.

An additional menu of seafood and chicken dinners, sandwiches, burgers and po’ boys is offered for those that just can’t quite tackle an enormous buffet meal.

Steak-lovers can enjoy a hamburger steak ($14.95), eight-ounce filet ($22.95), 10-ounce sirloin ($15.95) and 16 and 24-ounce ribeye’s ($19.95 - $27.95). All are served with choice of baked potato or fries and Texas toast.

A selection of entrees includes the Dungeness crab dinner ($21.95), catfish plate ($13.95), shrimp dinner ($16.95), chicken dinner ($10.95) and Berry’s seafood sampler ($20.95). Entrees are served with fries, onion rings or baked potato, hush puppies and coleslaw.

Sandwiches include fried catfish, shrimp and oyster po’ boy ($9.95- $11.95) and Berry’s hamburger ($9.95). A serving of fries comes with each one.

And, if eating light on your agenda, $4.95 brings one trip to the sprawling salad bar. Children’s meals and ala carte sides and appetizers are also on the menu.

Berry’s is located at 2942 U.S. 49 in Florence. Hours of various buffets vary according to the day. The daily country lunch buffet is offered Monday-Friday, 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., while the Saturday country lunch buffet is open 10:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Country dinner buffet hours are Monday-Wednesday, 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. The seafood buffet is offered Thursday from 4:30 – 9 p.m., Friday from 4:30 –10 p.m. and Saturday, 3:30 – 10 p.m. Berry’s is closed on Sundays.

Call (601) 845-7562 to check on daily rotating buffet items or to place a to-go order. Or, to learn more about the different buffets and menu items at both locations, check out their website at www.berrysseafood.com
