Lupin Mine is the only one in the region to have done any substantial mining. The others are simply properties where exploration has happened over the last 60 years that could potentially be transformed into mines should the Grays Bay Port open up.

I just became aware of another really important northern road project. Nunavut had started consultations earlier this year on the Kivalliq Intercommunity Road Project, a proposed all-season road from Arviat to Chesterfield Inlet, with connections to Whale Cove and Rankin Inlet, and a long spur north to Baker Lake.

This is a revival of the Nunavut portion of the older Nunavut-Manitoba All-Weather Road proposal that ended up stagnating due to lack of political interest at the time. I would very much love to see the entire thing come to fruition, but I am happy to see Nunavut taking the initiative on advancing the planning of their portion. Hopefully Manitoba can one day start looking into their portion in the near future.

Remember though, the federal government doesn’t fund new roads projects as Canada has enough roads .

Nunavut needs to look at building an LRT connection to those communities instead!

There would be a lot of economic benefit the whole route. It would also lessen the impact of airline weather holds. Also adding a full all season road to even Churchill would be of great benefit. However there would have to be survival stations built along since the storms that come through there can be long.

The road out of Rankin to AngicoEagle is quite well used from what I am told.

Lots of resourse along that full route.

Some more major project updates from the last few months or so that I am not sure if were mentioned previously in this thread:
  • New DND Multipurpose Facility now under construction in Yellowknife. This building is located at 80 Falcon Road and will house JTF North and the Rangers. Current DND facilities in the area are small and spread out, so this should be good for centralizing operations.
  • The Iqaliut Deep Water Port finally opened last summer.
  • Another port project, the Qikiqtarjuaq Deep Sea Port, is currently in design phase and was awarded to civil engineering firm CBCL last November. Qikiqtarjuaq is located on Broughton Island along the east coast of Baffin Island, and appears to be home to some mining operations as well as a Northern Warning System station.
  • The long-awaited Nanisivik Naval Station is also nearing completion and expected to open this summer. The project has been significantly scaled back, including offering no heating for on-Site fuel tanks, limiting the operation of the facility to the summer season only. The facility is likely going to have to be upgraded again or a new facility is going to have to be built somewhere else to achieve the original intended purpose.
  • The Wrigley-Norman Wells portion of the Mackenzie Valley Highway project in NWT is back in the planning process, with the ESA process being re-initiated back in October. The section from Norman Wells to Inuvik still remains on hold for the time being.

It might be completely impractical, but a rail link up through Nunuvut branching from either the Hudson Bay Railway or the Keewatin Railway and terminating at maybe Rankin Inlet or Baker Lake would probably do a whole world of good for economic development and reducing the cost of living of northern communities along the way.

The Hudson Bay Railway seems to be somewhat economically viable (with a little help) so it's not completely outside the realm of possibility methinks.
