Mississippi’s first LGBTQ shelter opening in Jackson
Video Link

Quote:
JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Mississippi’s first LGBTQ+ domestic shelter has opened in the capital city.

Officials said the Jack Myers House took a decade of planning and executing.

“There has been a lot of love and attention for the city and for the state. And there are a lot of community members that have really come together to really help get the Jack Myers House open,” said Jason McCarty, executive director of the Mississippi Harm Reduction Initiative.

The idea started in the 1970s with a man from Pelahatchie. Jack Myers provided resources to those in need.
“They were taken cared of and protected and loved. And Jack’s been doing that his whole life. And that’s why I’m thrilled that they named the center after him or the house after him to honor him while he’s alive, so he can see it because this city owes a lot to him,” said Stan Nichols, the manager of the Jack Myers House.

The house will serve as a resource hub for residents and those who are seeking help in the community.

“Our clients can stay up to 90 days. There are shop placements, there’s resumé building. There is a recovery aspect to it, as well. So if there is a substance use disorder, we can get you back into treatment. We can help you with those aspects. There are support groups for people surviving domestic violence, support groups for mothers of domestic violence,” said McCarty.

The Jack Myers House will hold a grand opening in July.

Discover Mississippi: Carousels at the Agriculture Museum

Elaborate carousels, replete with carved and lacquered horses and other animals take you back in time.
Quote:
When the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum opened in 1985, 22 exhibits were available to tour on the 39-acre property in the center of Jackson. One area that takes visitors back to a simpler time is its fictional Small Town, Mississippi. Reminiscent of a 1920’s town, the exhibit is complete with a general store, filling station, sawmill, blacksmith shop, doctors’ office and more. One of the ways people found entertainment was on elaborate carousels, replete with carved and lacquered horses and other animals.

By 1988, Small Town, Mississippi had its own carousel. Manufactured by the Allan-Hershell Company of North Tonawanda, New York, the 1928 carousel features cast aluminum galloping horses and sleigh-style seats, and a custom canvas top. The carousel house features painted scenery. Each of the animals on the carousel has a scene painted on the saddle. The carousel is retrofitted with 144 lights and 12 mirrors. The nostalgic carousel fits the overall theme of Small Town.

A larger carousel will now be added to the museum, thanks to a generous donation from Miskelly Furniture.

“The original carousel is great, but it’s best suited for small children,” says Justin Nipper, marketing and events specialist at the Ag Museum. “There is a height and weight limit. The new carousel can handle adult riders.”

The large antique carousel was acquired by Miskelly Furniture from a theme park in Argentina. Known as the “Caring Carousel,” it was located in a special wing of the store in Pearl. Customers paid $1 to ride the carousel, and the proceeds benefited many local charities, including Make-A-Wish Foundation, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and more.

“Over $200,000 was raised since Miskelly Furniture added it to their new building in 2004,” said Justin.

An announcement was made on October 19, 2020 that Miskelly Furniture was donating the carousel to the Ag Museum. Oscar Miskelly made the announcement with Agriculture and Commerce Commissioner Andy Gipson and Hayes Patrick, Executive Director of the Mississippi Ag Museum on hand.

At the press conference, Commissioner Gipson said, “We are very excited to accept this unique donation on behalf of the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum. This attraction will make a great addition to the multiple exhibits we currently offer across the grounds of the Museum complex. I look forward to seeing the joy their generous donation brings to all the families that visit the museum.”

The carousel had to be disassembled at the furniture store and taken in pieces to the Ag Museum.

“Because it was October, the state fair was in town,” says Justin. “The same people to assemble the rides at the fair were dispatched to Miskelly’s to disassemble the carousel. That wasn’t a job for just anyone. It required someone who understood what they were dealing with.”

The carousel will be reassembled inside a new carousel house once one is built.

“The location has been determined,” says Justin. “It will be on the grounds of the Ag Museum near the Children’s Barnyard and Multipurpose Building.”

There is no time frame for the construction.

“The Ag Museum Foundation is working on raising funds for the carousel house.”

The Ag Museum is located at 1150 Lakeland Drive in Jackson. It is open Monday through Saturday from 9am to 5pm.

WNBA star Breanna Stewart joins other athletes with donation to Jackson sports complex, The Ark

Quote:
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Late last year, The Ark, a rapidly growing sports complex in South Jackson, received donations from major names - including NBA superstar Kyrie Irving.

Now, the latest star to donate is 2023 WNBA MVP Brianna Stewart.

”The Ark has been a place, like I said, beyond my imagination and dreams. We are just thankful for donations of people like, you know, Kyrie, Brianna Stewart, Angie Thomas, those who’s helped us out so much, as well,” State Representative and founder of The Ark Ronnie Crudup Jr. said.

WNBA star Brianna Stewart made the donation alongside her sponsors PUMA and Clif Bar.

The amount of Stewarts donation is undisclosed, but Crudup Jr. did share the WNBA star matched Kyrie Irving’s donation from 2023.

These efforts made by sports stars don’t go unnoticed by the kids who come to the facility.

“One more main celebrity, but especially a basketball player, because we do a lot of basketball stuff here. So it’s been great to get folks of that caliber to be able to, you know, encourage the young men, the young ladies who are even out there today, to be able to go and shoot for their dreams and kind of give them some light on the wall they can look towards,” Crudup Jr. said.

The donations allow The Ark to continue to expand with the purchase of a fifth basketball court already made, it will be installed by the end of 2024.

Other future plans include expanding the boxing and gymnastic programs.

Less than a year later since its opening, Crudup is happy to see The Ark become what he hoped it would for the next generation.

“This place is all about exposure. And so we want to expose kids to other opportunities and ideas of things that they may not think is out there, as we do our Tumblr program real soon. We’re kind of getting things wrapped up. They’re gonna start before the end of the year. We try to expose kids so those type of things that they know that there are scholarships available, and tell them that in cheerleading and so these are the things that we really want to do here. It really tried to expand the minds and the thoughts of a lot of these folks,” Crudup Jr. said.

Other long term plans for The Ark include adding a pool, so they can offer swimming lessons and possibly create a swim team in the capital city.

VILLAGE AT MADISON BEGINS LEASING MORE SPACE IN DEVELOPMENT

Quote:
The Village at Madison is now starting preleasing for two additional buildings that will be built later this year, which will feature retail, restaurant, and office space.

The plan has been approved by the City of Madison, and construction will begin this summer for the second and third buildings within the development. The developers, Main Street Investors, released building plans that include a building consisting of 12,000 rentable square footage for mixed use retail (Building D) and a 2,400 square footage stand-alone building (Building G). Multi-tenant Building D will have spaces available ranging from 1,500 to 4,900 rentable square feet. Pinpoint Commercial Real Estate’s Ellis “BB” Mitchell and Sam Cox are representing the developer and leasing the spaces.

“The development will ultimately consist of 60,000 SF of restaurant, retail and professional office space,” Mitchell said. “75 zero lot line residences will also be located on site, which will provide excellent foot traffic for businesses located at The Village at Madison.”

Mitchell said they are targeting businesses such as quality restaurants, fashion or style boutiques, health and beauty operators, medical users, professional office users and other retail and office users.

“It is our goal to source quality, locally owned and operated businesses to The Village at Madison,” Mitchell said. “We feel that The Village at Madison will provide a much-needed mixed use development on the East side of Interstate 55 for people to come eat, drink and shop. The development provides excellent visibility from Madison Parkway and is ideally located between I-55 and Hwy 51.”

City of Laurel- Explore

Half Shell Oyster House found its home in The Village at Madison as the first business to commit to the development in 2020.

“Half Shell is regularly packed for lunch and dinner, and we feel their continued success within the development is extremely attractive to users looking to house their restaurant or retail business at The Village at Madison,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell said they already have secured multiple letters of intent from businesses looking to locate in the development, and they still have spaces available in the 1,500 to 4,900 square footage range in the new buildings. Once construction begins this summer, it is anticipated to take 10 to 12 months in efforts to complete the new building by the summer of 2023.

Main Street Investors is comprised of partners Dr. Michael Manning of Ridgeland, Lee Stafford of West Point, and Mark Castleberry of Starkville.

“The Developer, Mark Castleberry, has 30 years of experience in commercial development and we feel that his vision on this project will result in The Village being one of the more unique commercial developments in our market,” Mitchel said. “The Village at Madison, inspired by the Garden District in New Orleans, will provide Madison residents and its visitors with an upscale and unique place to come and eat, drink and shop locally.”

Madison County historic courthouse to be digital museum, learning center. What that means

Quote:
For nearly two centuries, the Madison County Courthouse has stood in the center of Canton's town square. Today, the building is a historical landmark.

The building has long since shed its role as a courthouse, and a committee formed several months ago to find a new purpose for the antebellum structure.

On Monday morning, the Madison County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve conceptual plans to turn the courthouse into a digital museum and gathering space.

From antebellum courthouse to museum
The courthouse, constructed from 1854 to 1856, has seen nearly two centuries of change from its home in the Canton Square's center.

The courthouse's construction marked the fourth county seat of Madison County, which was created in 1828. The city of Canton was incorporated in 1836, two decades before the courthouse's completion.

The courthouse has stood in Mississippi through the Civil War, the Civil Rights movement and decades more of societal change.

The architecture was part of the Greek Revival in the mid 19th century, marked by large columns and archways. The courthouse underwent restoration in 2015 and has long awaited a new purpose. Now, it will serve as a museum telling the history of Madison County.

Plans are still in preliminary stages, but John Wallace, chair of the courthouse planning committee, presented the Madison County Board of Supervisors with details of what the space may look like during Monday morning's meeting.

The digital museum will sit on the first floor. The "digital" part of the title means instead of a traditional museum format, the displays will include large digital kiosks. Guests can interact with these kiosks to learn about the county's history.

The second floor will house gathering spaces suited for school field trips and business meetings.

Wallace asked for the board's approval to move forward. Wallace said the courthouse would become a "learning center" and described it as a "mini conference center."

Addressing the board, Wallace said the original plans to turn to the courthouse into a tradition museum were scrapped due to the cost. The digital museum concept partnered with the new meeting spaces not only reduces the cost, but gives people more incentive to visit.

"Let's say somebody's there for a business conference of some type. During the breaks and so forth, if they're interested, they can go to the kiosks and learn more about Madison County," Wallace said. "Or you can just come as a history class from Velma Jackson, or Madison, Ridgeland, whatever. Bring your class there and you can go through all the history that's been accumulated and made available virtually or digitally."

The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the concept.

Next steps
The next steps for the courthouse are renovations. A committee for the courthouse's rebirth is already in place and will continue meeting as the summer goes on.

There is no set date for the new building's opening. While addressing the board, Wallace called the plan a "long-term project."

Plans on the museum's content are still in early stages as the committee moves into the next phase. On Monday, the board approved the concept, but still needs to approve concrete plans including renovations at a later date.
The board did not give an estimated cost Monday morning, but during a meeting on Jan. 18, the board approved restoration plans with an estimated cost of roughly $450,000.

Telling the story of Madison County
Wallace said that the historic courthouse already has value, but this new plan will make it usable to schools, businesses, clubs and the general public.

Before approving the plans, Supervisor Paul Griffin made comments supporting the concept. He emphasized that many who were born and raised in Madison County have little to no knowledge of its history. Griffin also remarked that the museum comes at a time of growth for the county.

"We got a big amount of people moving into Madison County that don't know nothing about the history," Griffin said. "So, I think it's going to be a great, positive thing to have."

Jo Ann Gordon, vice chair of the planning committee, also addressed the board members Monday morning, telling them how the digital museum will serve as a much-needed source of Madison County history.

"It's going to be a wonderful asset just to tell the story of Madison County," Gordon said. "We haven't yet told that story."

Hinds Co. Supervisors plan to move Election Commission to old military processing center

Quote:
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - A former military processing center on State Street could soon be home to the Hinds County Election Commission.

On Monday, the Board of Supervisors approved work on the facility at 664 S. State St. to make it ready for the move and hired IMS Engineers to determine the scope of work needed to do so.

The board also voted to rename the building the “Hinds County Administrative Offices.”

Once work is completed, the building will house the Election Commission and some elements of the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department.

District 4 Election Commissioner Yvonne Horton isn’t opposed to the move but urged supervisors to leave the commission at its current location at 701 Commerce St., at least until after the November presidential elections.

She also believes a lot of work will need to be done at the facility before the commission can relocate, saying that the building has multiple small rooms and has recently been inhabited by the homeless.

By comparison, the commission’s current headquarters has an air-conditioned office area with a reception area and cubicles for each commissioner, and an unairconditioned warehouse where voting machines, ballots, precinct bags, and other equipment are stored.

“Nothing in here in terms of this will be able to fit in any one room,” she said. “Nothing over there. The bags... tables, chairs... It can fit, but it wouldn’t be as convenient for us.”

“It has enough space. However, it is not designed for what we would like to have it designed for.”

The commission has been located at its Commerce Street facility since 2020. The county currently pays $7,000 a month to lease the space. That contract is up in October.

Horton raised other concerns as well, such as the lack of parking and the county’s decision to rename the facility.

“We’re either going to block State Street... I don’t think we can block State Street, or they’re going to have to pay additional money to take those things to the courthouse (so the pickup can be) in the tunnel at the courthouse.”

Horton was referring to Election Day pickups, when precinct workers pick up bags and ballots for their respective precincts. During last year’s general election, cars backed up along South Commerce waiting to turn into the commission parking lot.

As for the building’s name, supervisors renamed the facility the “Hinds County Administrative Offices.”

Horton is concerned that the name could be confusing for people visiting county offices to find out information on items other than election-related matters.

“As a voter, I would think, ‘Oh, I can go in and ask questions about my taxes... I can ask questions about how [you do] your taxes in Hinds County, talk to perhaps a county administrator or the assistant administrator in that field,” she said. “Understand this: when you come in, you’re going to talk to [an election commissioner or someone from the sheriff’s department.”

Livingston development moves forward after heated discussion

Video Link

Quote:
JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A new development that’s designed to attract young professionals to Jackson is moving forward, but not without controversy.

Developers are ready to move into the next phase of the Village at Livingston Place project.

In a 4-2 vote and a one abstention, the Jackson City Council voted to move forward with the project. It was a heated discussion between Councilman Kenneth Stokes, Ward 3, and his colleagues. He said residents in his ward are not pleased with the decision to approve the project.

Robert Gibbs, an attorney for the Alabama-based developer, said $2 million has already been invested into the project to clear the area and install utility lines. He said they’re looking to build 200 new homes with the hopes of expanding the area and providing an economic boost to the City of Jackson.

“What we have to do now once the plan is approved, well, we’re going to be… We are working with the construction company to close the construction project once that’s closed on, then we start the construction. So, we expect that to starts within the next two to three months. There shouldn’t be anymore hold ups,” said Gibbs.

He said a new neighborhood has not been introduced in the city in about 30 years. Homes will range between $200,000 and $300,000.

Brandon now home to Entergy’s EV fast chargers
Video Link

Quote:
BRANDON, Miss. (WJTV) – Ahead of the busy Fourth of July travel period, Entergy Mississippi unveiled the next location of its direct current electric vehicle (EV) fast chargers.

Located in downtown Brandon near Interstate 20, the company’s $350,000 fast charging station will serve both residents and EV drivers passing through on I-20 and nearby I-55.

Officials said this location, along with the company’s first set of fast chargers located in the Renaissance at Colony Park in Ridgeland, will allow Entergy Mississippi to expand research on the impact of EVs to the power grid.

“We have to be prepared with the right infrastructure to serve our customers when the time comes,” said Haley Fisackerly, president and CEO, Entergy Mississippi. “Electric vehicle usage in Mississippi is at a stage right now that allows us to collect data and begin developing a plan for the future.”

The Brandon facility is equipped with two direct current fast chargers that provide up to 180 kilowatts of power and are compatible with many electric vehicle models. Customers using the charging station pay $.30/kWh and, on average, an EV can be fully charged for $20-$30 within 30-45 minutes.

“We’re thrilled that Entergy chose our downtown to be a part of this program. With our proximity to I-20, we hope travelers will find benefits in having a conveniently placed charging station and use the opportunity to enjoy our local businesses as well. We’ll also learn how we can prepare to meet the demands of electric vehicles in our community,” said Brandon Mayor Butch Lee.

Department of Public Safety moving once multimillion-dollar project completed

Old building on Woodrow Wilson has long list of problems
PEARL, Miss. —
The state of Mississippi is currently in the midst of a multimillion-dollar construction project that will take hundreds of employees out of Jackson and over to Rankin County.

The clock is ticking for a new building for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, as the old building on Woodrow Wilson Avenue has a laundry list of problems. For starters, the foundation of the building is so bad it is actually leaning, but the timeline of when staff can get out of the building is unclear. DPS headquarters was built in 1976. The past decade has brought asbestos problems, gas leaks and a foundation that is shaky.

Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell recently gave 16 WAPT News a tour of the new DPS site that is currently under construction in Pearl, across from the state crime lab.

“For the first time in our agency’s history, we are going to have all of our divisions underneath one roof,” Tindell said. “I cannot tell you how much that means and the importance of having all of your state law enforcement that falls under this umbrella underneath one roof, working together, sharing information and sharing intelligence.”

The present price tag of the construction has now risen to between $65 million and $70 million and will leave a vacancy at Woodrow Wilson and Interstate 55. Tindell said the state can make some of that money back by selling the current site once it’s vacant.

“That is going to be a prime piece of real estate that can be developed or used by the hospitals,” Tindell said. “There are a number of options there.”

“The first thing, of course, is take the building down. It’s full of asbestos and can’t be used for anything else,” said Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann.

I usually say out of politics but why does Governor Tate Reeves hate Jackson so? Its puzzling as to what the citizens of Jackson did to deserve this type of vitriol. Now DPS leaving will take away much needed revenue for our community. Hopefully an international company moves to Jackson and invest in our infrastructure! Amazon is a great start, but we need more companies to come within the city limits of Jackson. I also hope that we have a governor who isn't at war with Jackson and wants our capital city to succeed. It's quite sad how they want everything in the suburbs and nothing for the city of Jackson. There is no reason why Jackson can't have economic success as Atlanta, Austin and Nashville. I believe in my city and can't wait for it to be a world-class city that host events as big as the Summer Olympic Games!! Why not the city with soul

Baton Rouge developer bringing business model to the Landmark
(article from 2018)

Quote:
On the corner of Pearl and Lamar streets and along Capitol Street, the dark, glass-walled Landmark Center sits, mostly vacant.

What was once a bustling hub of activity for AT&T is now a shell of what it was in its heyday.

But The Landmark's story is far from over. J. Dyke Nelson, a partner with Weinstein Nelson Developers in Baton Rouge, is betting that the 367,000-square-foot building at 175 E. Capitol St. has a few more chapters left.

In the coming months, the stale air that now hangs in the open conservatory will be dissipating as 200 apartments, a grocery store, commercial and retail space and restaurants equipped with outdoor space breathe new life into the building. Work is slated to begin this summer with a completion date of 2019.

Nelson, also well known for his architectural firm DNA Workshop, is confident in his business model. He and his partners did a near exact replica in downtown Baton Rouge with the 440 on Third.

"We had people tell us we were crazy and didn't know what we were doing and we had those same people calling us trying to get involved on the back end," he said.

Nelson said his company likes "smaller cities" that are on the cusp of change.

When he and his partners started 10 years ago, they managed approximately 10,000 square feet. Now, they own or manage over one million square feet in four states.

They were a large part of the revitalization of downtown Baton Rogue and have since invested in cities in South Carolina and Indiana.

"We look for a certain set of metrics where we can find value and build on that and, hopefully, make additional investment and be a catalyst in those communities," Nelson said.

Noting the success of Fondren but the quality of buildings in downtown Jackson, Nelson said the idea of investing in downtown was attractive.

"It's a capital city, it has a college nearby, it checks a lot of boxes," he said. "There's a lot of upside potential for the city in general, not just physically but culturally and everything else. There is a rich culture in Jackson, and being the largest city in Mississippi affords a lot of different things."

Exclusive: New owner of Landmark Center unveils plans for apartments, convention complex parking garage (article from 2022)

Quote:
Mississippi Regional Housing Authority expects cost of venture to run $56 million
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Nearly two hundred apartment units and a parking garage for the Jackson Convention Complex could become a reality in the next year once funding for the $56 million venture is secured, the new owner of downtown Jackson’s Landmark Center said Tuesday.

Hickman Johnson, the executive director of Mississippi Regional Housing Authority No. VI, showed 3 On Your Side plans for each floor of the seven-story building that sits at Capitol and Lamar streets.

“The Landmark building has been vacant for the last eight years or more. My staff put together this binder of failed projects over the past eight years. And these were projects proposed by local government, by the private sector, by the public sector, but nothing succeeded,” Johnson said.

The building wasn’t completely vacant during that period, however.

Lawyers with Richard Schwartz & Associates rented some space in the building until last February’s ice storm caused a pipe to burst for several days, flooding most of the floors.

A spokesperson for the law firm confirmed they moved out of the building a few months after the damage. That damage also led the previous owner to give the building to the housing authority, Johnson said.

He believes they will succeed where others have failed, in part, because he said a regional housing authority can do more than a private developer.

“We try to change the face of affordable housing as an agency that does not have to look at the bottom line,” Johnson said. “We can do a lot more than those who are constrained by profit.”

The agency’s plan consists of four floors of residential apartments -- studios, one-bedrooms, and a smaller number of two-bedrooms -- and retail on the ground floor, including a specialty grocery store.

The top two floors will be reserved for prime office space.

Johnson said a portion of the 184 apartments will be subsidized, but most will have fair market rates.

In the future, he said they plan to construct a much-needed parking garage on property on Pearl Street across from the Landmark Center once they purchase that property, which will serve both the Landmark and Jackson Convention Complex.

“This is an economic boom for this city, and especially for capitalists. So I would hope that most would embrace what we do realize that, contrary to some of the some suggestions of others, this is an opportunity to build communities rather than destroy communities,” Johnson said.

Johnson pointed to other properties he had overseen since serving as executive director, including more than a dozen townhouses in Tchula and a one-hundred unit building in Jackson on the site of the old Terry Road La Quinta Inn.

He said they’re still in the process of securing funding for the $56 million endeavor, which could come from bonds, low-income housing tax credits and other sources.

The use of those housing tax credits for downtown Jackson properties is not uncommon.

The Landmark’s previous developer had planned to seek LIHTC funding for senior apartments inside the building as well.

In addition, HRI Properties utilized housing tax credits from the state and LIHTC funds to help bankroll construction of the Capitol Art Lofts several years ago.
