Always love your pictures!

If you and/or your partner are free on Sunday, April 28th I hope you'll grab some shots from Metro's Mission-to Mission event in South Pasadena.

Looks fun!

Yes, lots of people having fun. There was even a station for bike rentals. Had I known, I'd have planned for my partner and me to rent bikes and ride the whole route---we don't have our own bikes.

Photos I took last Sunday, 5.5.24.

Though it's existed since 2005, we had never been to Arlington Garden in Pasadena. This was our first time, and won't be our last. We didn't realize how extensive it is, and how mature the plants/trees/flowers are. I guess some of them have been there quite a while; the gardens are on the site of an old huge mansion that existed from about 1902 to the mid-1960s, when it was torn down. The lot sat vacant until about 2005, when the garden was started. It has evolved since then.

Has anyone ever heard of Yoko Ono's Wish Tree art project? Well, one of them is right here in Pasadena's Arlington Garden.

Not very many people have tied wishes on the trees, and mostly I saw instructions for people rather than wishes.

Here's a wish:

I didn't see any death wishes; hey, that's an idea.

Months ago, I weaned myself off of Claritin. Surprisingly, after being around all of these different kinds of beautiful flowers and plant life, I didn't sneeze once during our time at the garden!

And then, it was lunchtime.

We both had very tasty spicy pineapple mezcal margaritas.

I think it's gorgeous too! Definitely will be visiting it again. Gardens are a great place to relax and just decompress. Even meditate.

Photos taken this evening, Thursday, 5.23.2024.

Tag along with my partner and me for a drink and dinner, at a favorite Peruvian restaurant!

At this particular Peruvian restaurant, a kitty-cat robot helps with food delivery.

The person/people in the kitchen load up the robot with the food, and it then goes ahead and knows which table to bring it to.

Then the server comes and serves the food from the robot.

The server leaves to tend to other things/people, and the unloaded robot knows to go back to the kitchen.

Random photos taken Sunday, 5.26.2024.

I try to keep the photos in this thread within Los Angeles County, but occasionally, Orange County bleeds in. Like I've mentioned before, I guess this could be a Greater Los Angeles Area thread...

So, tag along with me and my partner to Fullerton and San Juan Capistrano, both in Orange County!

Hehe I thought I would take a lot of photos of San Juan Capistrano, one of the few areas of southern Orange County that I like. It's historic, has the Mission, has the Los Rios neighborhood, which is supposedly the oldest continuously inhabited neighborhood in all of California, having buildings that date to 1794... but instead, we ended up at a wine bar and had some food and plenty of wine. So, let's just say we hung out at the wine bar instead of walking around San Juan Capistrano. But it's OK, we've been to San Juan Capistrano many times and have seen the Mission, the Los Rios District, etc., so I didn't think to walk around and take pictures of it. Been there, done that. We just enjoyed the wines at the wine bar.

The last time we went to San Juan Capistrano, which was a number of years ago, we took public transportation from South Pasadena all the way there and back: We took the Metro A Line (back then called the Gold Line) to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, and then caught the Metrolink all the way to San Juan Capistrano. We didn't do that this time; instead, we drove to Fullerton in Orange County and caught the Metrolink train there to San Juan Capistrano.

Fullerton Station. Both Amtrak and Metrolink use this station.

Here comes the train! Lots of people wanting to take the train, I guess because it was Memorial Day weekend.

You can't tell from this picture but the train was crowded, every seat was practically taken, going south.

Looking out the window, I was a little surprised at how green the natural landscape was, even at this time of year.

Our stop: San Juan Capistrano.

Just a short walk from the train station is this wine bar. We decided to go there for lunch and some wine. Hehe we ended up staying there basically the whole time. So convenient from the train.

Our first of a number of wines.

Olive tapenade on baguette slices, with parmesan and balsamic reduction dipping sauce.

Ground beef stew with lentils and pita.

We hung out at the wine bar for a bit, and then we just conversed for a bit, talked about a bunch of things... and then we both said "Hmm, do we just wanna catch the train back to Fullerton?" We thought of this because the next train back to Fullerton was at 2:05pm, and the next one after that was at 6:03pm. We didn't wanna wait until 6, so we decided to catch the 2:05 train back to Fullerton. We had gotten to San Juan Capistrano around 12:15pm or so, and at this point it was 1:55pm. So we paid the check and started walking back to the train platform.

The train platform borders the historic Los Rios District.

I snapped a few shots of it; it's really an interesting street, but like I said, we've already explored it a number of times before. I just stayed near the railroad tracks and took some pics of Los Rios Street.

Bye San Juan Capistrano! Until another time...

Back in Fullerton.

The Fullerton Transportation Center actually has 3 historic train depots on site; aside from the one I took pictures of earlier, there's this one, which now houses an Old Spaghetti Factory.

We explored a small bit of downtown Fullerton.

And then we had Greek food for dinner, which was pretty good.

Some retsina.

Kalamata olive spread.

Octopus.

Keftedes.

Tiropita.

Then, to walk off our meal, we did just a short walk around downtown Fullerton, and then walked back to the car to go home.

Very cool tour, I’ve never hung out in San Juan Capistrano but did go to a concert at the Coach House to see Strunz and Farah many years ago back in the late 90’s. I like downtown Fullerton, used to work in the area and hung out a few times on the weekends back in the day. A couple weeks ago I took advantage of the $10 Metrolink weekend pass to go to a graduation party in Rancho Cucamonga. It was a nice way of just relaxing and enjoying the scenery from the SFV to downtown and on out to the I.E., so much infill going on around a lot of the stations.

Anyway I am thinking of doing it again soon but going to Oceanside for the day on a Saturday, but who knows I may just decide to check out San Juan Capistrano instead. Thanks for sharing I really believe a lot of people enjoy your tours.

Thanks! Yeah, San Juan Capistrano makes a nice day trip. Oceanside would be nice too. Years ago, when I was still a college student in the early 1990s, I saw a Chick Corea concert at the Coach House, and I only went because I was taking a History of Jazz class, and we had to see 3 jazz concerts during the semester, and that was my third concert. We had to prove we went by showing tickets or a receipt.

I think you should! Yeah, on Saturdays and Sundays, you can buy a day pass for 10 bucks. During this weekend, they even offered a 10 dollar day pass on Memorial Day. And I think on weekends, kids can ride for free.

Some random photos I took over the last 2 weeks or so.

My view out the window...

...as I ate sweet potato fries.

This was a dance performance we went to, that we weren't sure we were gonna like. It was untraditional in the sense that they weren't confined to a stage or one location. They moved all over the place, and mixed in with the audience, as well as even picked a few audience members at random to dance with them, some even same sex. We as audience members were also encouraged to move around, because at times the dancers broke up and went to separate areas, and we were encouraged to watch whomever and whichever group wandered wherever. The dancers themselves were all different body types and ethnicities... it was actually pretty fun.

Not sure what this is called in Chinese, but Filipinos call this "buchi." It's my mom's fave. They make it fresh here, so it's really good.

Dumplings and bao, or what Filipinos call "siopao."

Some very random nothing insignificant photos I took over the past few days. I'm a little inebriated right now so I decided to post them.

View out the window of one of our go-to restaurants...

And I saw a lizard with a really long tail, probably the longest tail I've ever seen on a lizard. DAYAM.

Oh and what did I have at this restaurant? Well, deviled eggs...

...and risotto with calamari and some kind of greens, and Spanish chorizo.

On another day, this was my view...

...as I ate a mushroom and feta cheese pizza.

Saw this another day. This is that "annoying woman at the museum" outfit. Or "annoying woman at the botanical gardens" outfit. You know, with the white tennis shoes and the white ankle socks?

OK I am an Olympics freak! And with the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics kicking off in a matter of weeks, I'm really looking forward to watching the games on TV, and it's also getting me excited for the 2028 Summer Olympics here in Los Angeles. Do I wanna be an Olympic volunteer? Hmmm...

Being that Paris will soon become a 3-time Olympic host, LA will also become a 3-time Olympic host in 2028... so, this holiday July 4th morning, I got up a little early to take advantage of the still cool temperatures and lack of rush-hour traffic to drive to Exposition Park (it only took me 20 minutes) and look at some venues that were used in past LA Olympics and will also be used in the upcoming '28 Games.

The Los Angeles Swimming Stadium. This will be the diving venue for the 2028 Summer Olympics (swimming will be at SoFi Stadium, water polo and artistic swimming will be at a pool in Long Beach). This is a legacy venue from the 1932 Summer Olympics. It was one of only 2 venues specifically built for the 1932 Olympics (the other being the Marine Stadium in Long Beach, used for rowing in 1932 but not in 1984, when Lake Casitas in Ventura County was used for rowing and canoeing; the LB Marine Stadium will be used again for rowing and canoe sprint in 2028). The LA Swimming Stadium was used for all the aquatic events in 1932---swimming, diving and water polo (synchronized swimming/artistic swimming wasn't yet an Olympic sport back then). The Swimming Stadium wasn't used as a venue in the 1984 Summer Olympics; for '84, the swim center at USC was used for swimming, diving, and synchronized swimming, and the water polo venue was at Raleigh Runnels Pool at Pepperdine University.

These Olympic rings are the same ones that were on the Coliseum peristyle during the 1984 Summer Olympics, which were "set on fire" as part of the cauldron-lighting ceremony.

The video quality is bad, but you get the picture. I love the Philip Glass musical composition for the cauldron-lighting.

The structure actually held the grandstand for spectators; it was later converted into a building with offices, I think in 2002 or 2003.

Here's a rendering of what it might look like during the 2028 Olympics:

LA28

BMO Stadium, which I believe will be one of the stadiums to host preliminary soccer matches for LA 2028.

I'm very sure these apartments were here during the 1932 Summer Olympics.

This sidewalk dates from 1925.

This is now the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, but back then it was the Los Angeles County Historical and Art Museum. This was the venue for the Olympic Arts competitions and exhibitions during the 1932 Summer Olympics. Per Wikipedia, art competitions formed part of the modern Olympic Games during its early years, from 1912 to 1948, and then they stopped doing it, because they considered artists to be professional. They were replaced with Olympic Arts Festivals, which are non-competitive.

All around Exposition Park, you see these 1984 Summer Olympics-era concrete benches, with the LA'84 logo on them. Some are in better shape than others.

This is what used to be the California State Armory, built in 1912. It was the fencing venue during the 1932 Summer Olympics.

The building is currently an annex of the California Science Center, serving as the Science Center School and the Amgen Center for Science Learning since 2004.

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It will be 105 years old when it hosts the 2028 Summer Olympics. It'll be the first stadium to host Olympic track and field/athletic events three times.

And now a few random pics I took yesterday at dinner, looking out the window from one of our go-to restaurants.

I said to my partner "Oh, it's Lobsta Truck." And then he told me that one of his coworkers RAVES about it, but that same annoying coworker always makes it a point to call it "Lobster Truck." My partner and I have never had it.
