Was watching NBC this morning and they talked about the massive disruptions on NJ Transit yesterday and talked about how it was a result of Chris Christie canceling the new Hudson tunnel a decade ago. Phil Murphy was one of Christie's biggest critics over that decision, only for him to turn around and lead the opposition to killing congestion pricing in Manhattan.

Yup. Chris Christie did more harm to the region's economy and mobility than even Dump. He cut NJ Transit's Manhattan-bound rail capacity in half.

If you look at the regional sales prices, you see NJ prices were comparable to NY and CT until Christie made the decision. Since then, NY and CT prices have appreciated far ahead of NJ. It's mobility. If you work in the region's core, it's better to live in NY and CT than NJ.

And the new Amtrak tunnel, while it will help, will not fix the issue. This is an Amtrak tunnel. Christie cancelled a NJ Transit tunnel. Amtrak controls the new tunnel, and they plan on doubling service. NJ will have added capacity, but nothing like with the previously u/c ARC tunnel. NJ will eventually have to build its own tunnel.

Congestion Pricing: Comptroller Lander assembling potential plaintiffs for suit to restart paused Manhattan toll

By Ben Brachfeld
Posted on June 12, 2024

City Comptroller Brad Lander said Wednesday that he is assembling a coalition of legal minds and impacted parties to potentially sue New York state over Gov. Kathy Hochul’s eleventh-hour decision to indefinitely pause congestion pricing.

I'll vote for Lander for mayor. He has informally announced he's running.

I disagree with him on many issues, but he supports transit and is a straight shooter. He's become the most outspoken advocate for congestion pricing.

Congestion pricing: Voters support Hochul’s pause, but disapprove of governor, in new poll

By Ben Brachfeld
Posted on June 20, 2024

New York voters are nearly twice as likely to support Gov. Kathy Hochul’s decision to pause congestion pricing as to oppose it, but tend to disapprove of her leadership more generally, according to a new statewide poll from Siena College.

I wonder if its occurred to her that she's going to have to win the primary first and many of the high info voters who generally participate in those are full power nuclear reactor core mad.

I doubt it. She has some of the worst political instincts I've ever seen.

That polling and resulting article are more or less fakenews.

45% of respondents supported the pause. So a majority don't support the pause, or have no opinion. That's an awful % if you're Hochul. This is a paused toll, or tax. People overwhelmingly don't want to pay tolls or taxes. You'd expect something like 75%, not 45%.

And this is statewide voters, so largely irrelevant. CP only matters directly in the NY Metro. No one in Buffalo is supporting/not supporting Hochul based on CP.

Also, Hochul's approval rating is the lowest ever recorded. She pissed off her former supporters (who mostly support CP) and still isn't liked by her former opponents (who mostly oppose CP). What a disaster and s---show.

She's gonna lose in the primary. Lander or James will be next Dem gov. Even if you like Hochul, and dislike CP, Hochul has revealed herself to be a liar with no backbone.

Sign up, NYC!

The New York City Department of Transportation will start selling authentic New York City street signs to lucky customers hoping to put a piece of New York City right on their wall.

The first street sign up for sale on CityStore, the official gift shop of New York City’s government, is for the Stonewall Place block of Christopher Street in the West Village, the block where the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement began with the 1969 uprising at the Stonewall Inn. Fifty of the 36×9 inch signs, manufactured at the DOT’s Sign Shop in Maspeth, Queens, are on sale this month for $75 apiece.

“Our monthly sign drops will allow all who love New York City to celebrate the people, places, and special occasions that make this the greatest city in the world,” said DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.

Congestion pricing: Brooklyn kids rally at Barclays Center to demand Hochul end pause and start Manhattan tolls

By Ben Brachfeld and Lloyd Mitchell

a little something to keep ibx hope alive ---

The federal government will give $15 million to the MTA to kickstart the Interborough Express light rail project between Brooklyn and Queens, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer told the Daily News on Friday. The federal dollars come at a time of great uncertainty for the transit agency, which is in the midst of slashing its capital budget since Gov. Hochul slammed the brakes on congestion pricing, which had been expected to generate billions. “I fought hard for this $15 million for the [interborough express] because it is both transformative and a smart way to establish new transit connections between Brooklyn and Queens,” said Schumer, a New York Democrat. The project piggybacks on light-rail tracks along an existing freight rail corridor, minimizing the amount of property the MTA would need to acquire in order to provide new transit service.

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer. Passenger service along the 14-mile freight line would allow transfers to 17 subways and provide for rapid transit between Queens and south Brooklyn without the need to travel through Manhattan. “This funding will help Brooklyn and Queens neighborhoods along the line that are growing and need more and better connections to each borough and to other subway, bus and rail lines,” Schumer said. “This means more jobs, a reduction in carbon emissions, and will save riders real time traveling between boroughs.” The $15 million in federal grant money comes out of the $1.5 billion pot of Transportation Department money earmarked for “projects with significant local or regional impact.” Notably, the funding does not require a local match to secure — unlike larger federal grants towards the Second Ave. subway and the Gateway tunnel project.

But the money is a drop in the bucket compared to the light rail project’s projected $6 billion total cost. A Schumer spokesman said the funds are intended for early design and engineering work “to get this project moving.” The Interborough Express, or IBX, has been expected to be the crown jewel of the MTA’s upcoming 2025-2029 capital budget, linking historically under-served neighborhoods to multiple subway lines. Hochul has long championed the IBX and made it the centerpiece of her transit budget this year, with $52 million in state funding towards design and engineering work on the project. But her decision to indefinitely pause the implementation of congestion pricing — which was expected to generate $15 billion in bond revenue for the MTA’s current capital budget — is set to force the agency to delay some larger projects into the 2025-2029 budget. Whether that will, in turn, cause delays for IBX remains to be seen.

So there's congestion in both Tokyo and LA, Paris and Houston, Moscow and Toronto. And there can be congestion at practically any time in such large and dense cities. But you're right in that it isn't only about congestion since raising funds for infrastructure improvements is also an important goal. And investing the time, money, and political will in setting up such a program is expensive so it doesn't make sense to leave huge amounts of potential revenue on the table. But to claim that because it has another important goal besides congestion that it has "nothing to do with congestion" just just plain false. Whether or not a particular implementation of CP is done in a way that one likes or agrees with has no bearing on the underlying concept which is sound.
Not in this case. The roads purposely funnel people from Long Island into NYC. Even if you are not going into NYC, you MUST drive through it to get anywhere else. So yes, it would help creating a bypass for these people. Its simply artificial congestion. And no, congestion in all of these cities is not the same. About 8 million people live on Long Island, there is no reason why they (along with all of the trucks/deliveries to the island) have to get funneled through NYC.

Make a bridge/dam to CT to completely bypass NYC. Ideally, another one direct to Sandy Hook, NJ as well - even if you make it for trucks only this would be huge.
Same with the NYC subway. Right now all of these lines funnel everyone into Manhattan for no reason, thats why IBX is important. There was also a rail tunnel proposal (Cross Harbor) bypassing Manhattan, direct from NJ to Brooklyn. Having dead-end rail terminals in Manhattan is also idiotic. No one in the world does this. Trying to get from Brooklyn to Queens on a subway??? Why don't you visit Times Square first! Because that place is surely not congested!

But of course, all of this presumes you are actually *serious* about tackling congestion, and not simply trying to get $$$.
