CLEVELAND, Ohio — Medical Mutual’s former downtown headquarters has been sold, and the historic Rose Building at East Ninth Street and Prospect Avenue will have a new life as a mixed-use development.

Developer Spark GHC has bought the building and is entering in a joint venture with Cleveland Construction, according to a news release. The two firms have dubbed the mixed-use development “Project Scarlet” and say they will spend $100 million or more redeveloping the building.

Here’s how a 1/4 percent sales tax can pay for new stadiums, airport and more for Northeast Ohio

By Zachary Smith, cleveland.comLucas Daprile, cleveland.com
Updated: Jul. 08, 2024

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Envision a future where Cleveland’s sports teams play in top-notch stadiums, and the city’s airport becomes a premier hub with minimal costs for airlines.

Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer have proposed a groundbreaking way to fund these crucial facilities through a regional quarter-percent sales tax and manage them with a special commission. This plan would aim to generate $20.1 billion over 40 years, securing new stadiums for the Browns, Guardians and Cavaliers, relieving minor league teams of debt and building a state-of-the-art airport.

While it’s an ambitious and politically challenging idea, our analysis shows it’s financially viable and could finally bring regionalism to Northeast Ohio in a meaningful way.

small potatos multiplied -- what to do with abandoned apt buildings?

Boarded-up Shaker Square apartment could get new owner, landlord says

The vacant building on South Moreland Boulevard is one of a few properties that Cleveland City Hall is trying to turn over to a receiver.

Nick Castele, Government Reporter
July 8, 2024

Cleveland City Hall has been in housing court for a year trying to wrest control of the building at 2962 S. Moreland Blvd. from the local investor who owns it.

The city labeled the three-story brick walk-up a public nuisance in 2016. Today, the building is boarded up. Several windows are broken, and the yard is overgrown.

Housing Court Administrative Judge W. Moná Scott gave the city the go-ahead in February to bring in a receiver to take possession of the property and clean it up.

Then the building’s owner – a company called Nesvest LLC – proposed an alternative. Nesvest’s lawyer told a housing court magistrate in June that the company had lined up a buyer who would fix up the dilapidated building.

City Hall is open to the idea.

“If the new buyer in fact has the resources to rehab, then we’re all in favor of that,” Law Director Mark Griffin told Signal Cleveland.

Hough renovation secures financing, start date
By Ken Prendergast / July 8, 2024

Ten-story tower near University Circle gets second life

In a long-planned redevelopment, the renovation of a vacant and vandalized 10-story apartment building at the east end of Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood finally has the green light to start work. That green light came today as $47 million in financing closed for the project and construction is due to start before the end of this month.
