Most major international news outlets are saying he is from New Brunswick, Canada. Which is correct. Variety says he is from St. John. Here we go!

Deadline's article correctly says Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada so they got that right. Strange Variety got it wrong since I think they are both the same orgs now.

Anyways, RIP Donald. You had a fantastic run with lots of memorable roles across a hell of a long career.

This is a direct quote from the LA Times: "'Donald McNichol Sutherland was born in St. John, a small fishing village in New Brunswick, Canada, on July 17, 1935. The town had only 5,000 residents, he said, and “that was when the train rolled into town.”' I'm sure Sutherland was being tongue and cheek but....

Shannon Tweed talks about growing up outside St. John's like it was rural Kansas in the Great Depression. The only saving grace is she always shares the story of going into town for new clothes for school, and that was the only time you ever saw shoes, etc. lol

Such a likeable actor. Just something about him. Like in the Italian job. But then he could be super creepy like in back draft or mysterious like in JFK. Terrific actor.

I don't think I've ever not appreciated his acting in any role.

The Dirty Dozen, M*A*S*H, Animal House, Backdraft, JFK, etc., etc... he always seemed to bring something different to each film he was in, and played so many unique parts.

It’s quite hilarious when Saint Johners get bent out of shape when someone dares to abbreviate but that’s a bit much, small fishing village? Saint John’s the oldest Canadian city and was the largest city in NB for most of the country’s history. Guess some people can’t even take 5 seconds and google the Wikipedia page.

My dad said one time he was on Leno or Carson once claimed he forgot where he was from in Canada when asked, and he always held it against him.

__

I think he was a great actor, known for quite a variety of roles. He wasn’t the best Hawkeye Pierce, imo, (who was funnily enough from the small fictional fishing village, Crabapple Cove, Maine) but he also had a much better movie career than Alan Alda did.

The last movie I saw him in was Ad Astra, and though his part was brief, he was great in it… amazing film, btw.

RIP.

I thought he turned "President Snow" in the Hunger Games into a quite compelling and complex character too, when lesser actors would only have created a caricature.

Yeah, President Snow is certainly what I remember him from most recently and is probably his biggest impression on people. It was a fantastic performance and probably part of the reason the prequel movie(s) were/are being made.

But 88 years is a long time, and he was active on the screen through most of those years, which leaves a great filmography to draw from. Not to mention he's started a bit of an acting legacy considering how well his son Keiffer is doing too.

RIP, you've certainly earned it though you will also be very missed.

PS: here's the LA time article with that laughable description of "St John, New Brunswick".

Sad to learn about Donald Sutherland's passing. What a great Canadian actor.
