D.C. commission approves zoning change for U Street despite opposition

"D.C. officials have approved a zoning change that would allow for hundreds of units of housing on a city-owned property in Northwest Washington, despite opposition from residents who argued that a new high-rise would overwhelm their neighborhood.
The Zoning Commission's preliminary 4-0 vote Thursday would increase from 40 to 100 feet the height a building can rise on a portion of the U Street NW property where Mayor Muriel E. Bowser's administration is seeking a developer to build a mix of market-rate and subsidized housing.
The National Capital Planning Commission is to review the proposed zoning change in September, after which the zoning commission would convene for a final vote. If the proposed zoning change clears those hurdles, as expected, the city would seek applications from builders to develop the site.
For decades, police and fire facilities have occupied the sprawling parcel on the edge of Adams Morgan along 17th Street NW and between U and V streets. The Bowser administration's application to amend the zoning prompted multiple hearings over the past year that included hours of debate among residents, activists, and city officials..."
