Ok, here is my constructive critisim (Toon, if you are listening).

1. Provide a consistent setback/overhang of the first floor. The beige part that juts out is particularly jarring. Something like this:

2. Remove the beige colour from the colour palette. Replace all beige with red brick. Keep the blue-ish colour highlight, it makes it interesting.

The guys something.... And yeah, I was going to blame it on the city until I realized a recognized the signs of who designed it....

Toon designs ugly buildings and he can't even blame it on "copy and paste" like Claridge's normal firm. There all originally bad designs...

Anyway, hopefully it gets fixed while still getting approved for construction.

For such a wealthy city (and I’m not talking purely about economic prosperity), it amazes how we continually see such horrendous architecture. There’s almost zero things to be excited about when we talk about new buildings that are proposed or currently being built.

What style of architecture would this be considered?

This is shameful.

There desperately needs to be design standards in this City. There’s a friggin’ nightlife strategy, why not an architecture / urban fabric strategy?

The funny thing is the architect responsible for this design is often ranting/venting on Twitter and the press about Ottawa's lack of design quality and he seems grieved that the procurement process is broken and is a race to the bottom in terms of poor designs and cheap fees...yet he seems very focused on doing the public sector design work.

Reading his twitter feed can be quite tiring.

One of his most recent design 'commissions' was for a Dymon Self Storage in the east end of the City.

Since I don't think this has been posted here, below is a link to the local CA position on this development.

There main complaint is the reduction of amenity space.

https://oldottawasouth.ca/news/item/...velopment-news

My reply to them would be then lets add height, or remove parking, or allow for less of a setback.

This DCA dog's breakfast has been cleaned-up a little, based on the latest elevations. I'd love to see a new rendering though, for the full effect.

Here are the rest of the updated imagery, for the full effect. Still ugly, but less so that the first iteration.

I wish they made their design a little more boxy, more flat, and added more of those tiny balconies everywhere. People love tiny balconies.

At least they got the mic of random mismatched materials right.

Decades from now (if the cladding lasts that long), people will look at these buildings and wonder "Why?".

Decades from now? We're already wondering "Why?"
