The Hariri Pontarini (HPA)-designed office tower component of ‘The Well’ won the 2024 CTBUH* Award of Excellence in the Best Tall Building in the 100-199 metres category.

This firm does amazing stuff with brick. Originally from Ontario, Batay-Ssorba are a husband and wife architecture team who returned home from Los Angeles in 2010, where they had worked under Frank Gehry and Thom Mayne.

I love the zippers. I wonder how well they will weather. I guess it depends on the material and whether or not the top sides are weatherproofed in some way. Judging by the lack of lintel over the window openings and the continuation of the brick pattern, it is probably actually pre-cast. I don't like how the ground floor commercial uses (live-work?) meet the sidewalk. There is zero articulation. At a minimum there should be some kind of canopy and signage and other elements that create a transition between street and building. It feels more invasive than inviting.

2 interesting proposals for the Portlands further east of the planned Villiers Island community and parks. Both proposals are located near McCleary Park, which will be seeing a number of new proposals in the future… nice to see signs of a future build-out of residences/mixed-use on the eastern portion of the Portlands.

The 2 sites are just south across Lake Shore Blvd. from Cadillac Fairview’s massive East Harbour development. The East Harbour GO Train and new subway station/interchange, which has begun site work, is seen upper left below.

The Villiers Island community (Lower Don Lands) will be on the bottom left of the Context Plan below:

Really like 214-230 Sherbourne and Leaside Common, especially how they articulate the facade with the triangular cutouts and alternating brick color in the latter.
