Something like that ASU building would be amazing on that parking lot. That looks great. I am skeptical that the U would start anytime soon though given how their rio grande campus didn't work out.

I tried to find other examples of nice downtown university extensions like ASU but there are very few - I hope the U goes this way. This is USF health in downtown Tampa

Georgia Tech's 'coda at tech square' in Atlanta looks massive - I doubt the U would go this big and mixed use lol

Hopefully they at least attempt to engage the street level, it is a great spot for that.
The "huge future medical complex" on 8th south would be half a mile away.

Yeah, The U. has been scattering new medical centers throughout the metro for a while now. Also, as you pointed out Sight-Seer, a major new downtown med. center is already slated just a few blocks away. It would be pretty safe to say that this will be mostly student housing with perhaps a little commercial retail and University-related services. Keeping my fingers crossed it will be along the line of Orlando's post.

The U admins would be wise to have a meeting with the Urban Planning faculty and ask, "Ideas of what we could do with this block?"

But if the U acts anything like BYU, the suits wouldn't even think of this.

That is a nice ASU residential building but FWIW that is not student housing, Mirabella is an urban retirement community that is designed to offer life-long learning and other university connected programs to seniors who want to live an active, connected, walk-able lifestyle. It seems like it's been successful but I do consider it nicer than most ASU owned student housing.

Is the U planning to do similar to what ASU has done in this regard as well?

/\/\/\ Yes, that is Senior housing. I forgot to mention that, but the intent, like what ASU did, is to do mixed-use urban development with student housing integrated with it. So, even though that is senior housing, the look and urban density feel can be the same.

Btw, that was designed by a friend and colleague while we were both with Ankrom Moisan Architects.

Btw, below are a couple student housing towers that AMA did, and I helped out on, in the U district in Seattle.

That's way cool! Got me making plans for retirement even though that's 30+ years away. I'm a big fan of lifelong learning initiatives.

Love the building too.

Yeah it’s a good idea.My dad was pretty stoked on the idea too, it seems super popular from what I’ve read online will be interesting to see if they do more and maybe add another one in downtown Phoenix where ASU has been building a ton of new buildings and student housing.

Since you all are planning your senior living in cool urban towers, here's another one for you... Same brand, same architecture firm, different town...Portland. South Waterfront to be exact...

Portland is a mess right now. However, that building is nice.

Anyone know if this asshat building is in Smith's plans? It no longer fits the area. Very ugly:

Comrade has raised the fishing license fees at Sears Lake by a remarkable $50!! The increase is due to Mendenhall asking for a significant raise.

Does anyone on this thread know what that new apartment building going up right behind the old liquor store is?

It appears to be fairly tall as I have counted 14 or 15 floors and it appears to be going taller.

11-story apartment project on 400 S near Pioneer Park breaking new ground in south Downtown

Brix Apartments - 11 floors but I also noticed it looked really tall when driving by the other day

Best I could find on an updated rendering:

It looks like it's 12 stories now.

It's not on any of the blocks that are part of the SEG entertainment district.

Remember pre- Astra? The talk was when will they get rid of Carl Juniors.
Where is the next tallest? Or at least 400+ footer?

I can see a few locations that could host a new tallest.

1. Fidelity building (SE corner South Temple and 300 West)
2. Zions parking lot/around existing bank building (1st South and Main)
3. Block D (West Quarter phase 2)
4. Firestone building
5. Theater Tower
6. IHC Hospital and Patient tower (Sears block)
7. SW corner South Temple and 2nd West.
8. Barnes Bank building (3rd South and State)

The hospital may be a stretch but it is possible. The other locations are all probable for 400'+ or new tallest.

Not sure if this is the right place, but did anyone hear about the Statue of Responsibility potentially being built in Utah?

Yep. Very strange and not a fan. Feels like they need a statue with state leaders patting themselves on the back. Can any one work up a rendering of that for me

I am not against a big statue or art piece but I think the 'statue of responsibility' as proposed is honestly pretty ugly. However, it is privately funded so they can knock themselves out I guess. Personally, I would prefer an obelisk or human or something more timeless. Even a simple observation tower might be better

The only redeeming feature to me is the stained glass but even then I am more excited for the stained glass 'sphere of light' being built nearby in Lehi
