The research and education center is expected to be accompanied by a technology incubator in the to-be restored and expanded former Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge building located at 2115 Cass Ave. A third building will be new construction and create nearly 300 units of housing along Cass Ave. The DCI campus will also include green space.

Beautiful development, pretty website, and great-sounding words. How could anyone not be in favor of a "Center for Innovation"? I bet everyone will fall for it, just like every other time in every other city.

Projects like these are the religious monuments of the 21st century, and our universities and public institutions are the stubborn and pathetic shamans and priests, growing increasingly frustrated as their ever-more-massive sacrifices to the gods fail to return the predicted bountiful harvest to the townfolk. Just replace 'gods' with "tech talent" and 'harvest' with "innovation".

Apple began in a garage. Spending $250 million dollars on a "Center for Innovation" and a "technology incubator" wont even slow down talent from leaving, let alone create more of it, or make it bring a bountiful harvest.

Some more info, apparently the tech company they teased attached to this is Service Now. Which is signed as a tenant.

Quote:
Service Now, a California-headquartered software company, has signed on as a DCI anchor tenant.

“ServiceNow is deeply inspired to partner with Stephen Ross and the Detroit Center for Innovation,” said Bill McDermott, president and CEO of ServiceNow. “The amazing talent we need for our company is here in Detroit. We will build a team here, invest in this community and establish a new innovation hub at the forefront of digital transformation.”

Even just a satellite office of Service Now is a pretty big get. Hope this adds some momentum to development in the area.

ServiceNow is a huge company ($131 billion market cap, 61st largest in USA), so this is great news. If ServiceNow were in the UK, it'd be the 3rd largest. In Germany, it'd be close to #2. Largest in Italy by far.

This is exactly the type of major player Detroit needs to attract, instead of relying on the Big 3 and the Little Caesar's guy to do everything.

What's more, this is probably the largest lot in the immediate area that remains as-of-yet undeveloped. When I was in Detroit in September, the area around the Fox Theatre felt like one of the more "on-the-rise" areas of the downtown core, and I this would serve as another bookend to the nearby Huntington and Little Caesars projects.

According to the project's website, groundbreaking is expected to occur in 2023. Though I'd guess the date of actual construction start is pretty loose and the groundbreaking is just ceremonial.

So now they officially have the vast majority of the financing for this massive project.

Wonder if Ross will just do the other 50 million or he'll tap into other philanthropy organizations.

I really thought this project once started would just fly up. It seems like we should see more progress by now.

The foundation work is progressing, not sure what else would be expected at this point.
