Cool Chicago - Mayoral Race - Rahm Emanuel Wins

Daley says he will not run for re-election
September 7, 2010 1:35 PM

Mayor Richard Daley says he will not run for re-election in 2011.

"The truth is I have been thinking about this for the past several months," Daley said at a City Hall news conference. "In the end this is a personal decision, no more, no less."

Daley spoke for less than five minutes and took no questions.

Mayor Daley says he's not running for re-election

Is it ok to post articles in their entirety when they're only one sentence long?

Hopefully Rahm Emanuel runs to succeed him (he's said he wants to be mayor but won't run against Daley).

Lord knows there's no one on the Chicago city council who's fit to be mayor.

There are only two people in the country who i think have the balls to run Chicago: Jesse Jackson Jr. and Rahm Emmanuel. I really think its going to be one or the other. Either one of them should be able to dispatch any other competitors with ease. I'm hoping for an epic showdown between the two.

God help us if some other clown is elected.

^ i've heard that Fioretti and Reilly both have ambitions for the mayors office. what a freaking goddamn nightmare scenario for our town if either of those two hacks get anywhere close to it.

Ideally, the excerpts should be three sentences to three paragraphs long. If the article is only one sentence long, it does not make sense to cut it up any shorter.

This could be a great opportunity or a huge disaster depending on who replaces him. Right now I'd like to see Rahm Emmanuel win. But we'll see who else comes out of the woodwork.

wow this is huge news for Chicago.

some constants I know of Chicago. Chicago is flat, has lots of highrises, Capone used to live here, its Democrat, it has the 'L' and Daley is Mayor.

I guess I liked Daley. All I know is; as much as so many people bitched about Daley, during election time they always voted for him though, I have always retorted, go to another city and check it out then get back to me. Yup I know not the whole city or even close is well off but the comparison stands.

^ just because Richard M. is retiring, that doesn't mean that we couldn't still have a "mayor daley".

does anyone know if daley's son Patrick is back from serving in Afghanistan yet?

Expect Alan Keyes to move back to Chicago within the next 48 hours

I wouldn't be surprised to see Flores, Waguespack, and possibly Claypool to start putting out feelers soon. Ron Huberman is also someone to keep an eye on. Daley would definitely endorse Emanuel or Huberman, possibly Jesse Jr. too. The Blago trial didn't leave Jackson looking so good tho'.

I wouldn't mind Huberman as mayor, I think he's an excellent executive. The question is does he have the clout to establish a collation to get anything done and to keep the alderman in line? Or will the Alderhacks run wild with him in office?

What's so bad about Jesse Jackson Jr? I really like him. Maybe he would suck at being mayor, but he's been great in the other political offices that he's held. The only think I shudder at is the potential stupid shit his father will do if he wins.

The more I think about it the more I think Rahm is the best choice. I think that he is the only one malicious and cold enough to trounce the little alderhacks when they try to run amok with ludicrous plans and infighting. The question here is will Rahm throw away his chances at far more important national positions for the opportunity to be mayor? I don't think any mayor of Chicago can move to a national scene simply because its a black mark to be a "Chicago politician" let alone the king of Chicago politics: the mayor.

Couldn't agree more.

Damn, this is some shocking news, though.

I think Chicago needs a new vision, but NOT of the Jesse Jackson type, though. Please no Jesse Jackson!

^ Simply put, I don't want Chicago to be in the business of charity. It does enough charity as it is (see CHA), and the last thing Chicago needs to be is an engine of the Jackson family's ambitions for black America. Chicago is about much, much, much more than that. Whenever you look at the elder Jesse Jackson speak, do you really want that guy to be the primary voice in the ear of Chicago's next Mayor?

Agree 100% with the second sentence. I suppose since he won't have the power to dictate foreign policy and such, I might be OK with Rahm.

We all knew this day was coming soon, but it's still shocking news.

Fieoretti would never win anyhow. He is too stupid. Someone like Rahm would come along and clean his clock.

I know some people who work in Political Research in Chicago and are buddy buddy with Alderman Reilly (who really isn't that awful compared to most aldermen) and they say even Reilly and his staff think Fieoretti is a hack.

I'm talking to my friends now to see if I can find out what Reilly's reaction is to this news.
