The improvement from this single change has been huge. There is no longer any congestion westbound at this intersection, at any time of day. All westbound congestion is now caused by the awful MoT traffic lights on the freeway offramps.
The new intersection uses a pattern I haven't seen before: the westbound left turn occurs at the beginning of the green, and the eastbound left turn occurs at the end of the green. This seems to be working better than any other left-turn system I've seen.
The intersection is also gaining a dedicated right-turn lane westbound, whenever Shaw gets around to re-wiring its lines on the utility poles. (Is it just me, or is Shaw responsible for months of delays on every road expansion project lately?)
Eastbound traffic has also improved a little, due to the reduced length of red lights.
